Spot on.

The most recent premier has had it's ruck department questioned for at least the last 5 years.

Conversely I think our rucks were a big part of us winning a premership.  Even before Luke had his 5mins of fame, Max was huge dropping back and keeping us in the game defensively.  His five goals against Geelong in the prelim split that game wide open.

I'd also argue that while you may not need a champion ruck, having pretty solid ones is important and I think of Richmond and Hawthorn in this respects.

Also forgot that Steff Martin was another future of the developmental ruck options the early Gawn era.  Obviously not every hits a winner, but I think the MFC has a great recient history of developing champion ruckman.  Having Greg Stafford around a ruck coach is probably another very good ingredient to have.

And don’t forget Darren Jolley played in a granny with Swans.!!

Didn't forget him, but he left pre Gawn's arrival and that was mostly the context.

I guess there may have been a time when we had all of Jolley, Jamar and Martin, every one of them good enough to hold down the ruck in their own right, but not so well in the same senior side.

Interesting looking at Verrall's number in the under 18's SANFL level his disposal number are midfield like and seems to hit the scoreboard.

Intrigued by this selection purely because he's not a raw skinny type like the Bradke, Fillopovic, King who could barely win the footy or hit the score at any competition level.

I am really warming to Brodie Grundy his responses to Matt Jefferson and now Will Verral are very encouraging.!!

95kg at 18 is extremely promising, is going to be one of the stronger rucks going around am willing to bet, no idea where he will be skill wise, but on video alone it seems his reflexes are ahead of the game, baby giraffe not appropriate, more preying mantis..

I really think JT has picked the eyes out of a draft considering our picks reflect where we sit on the ladder.

Casey must be very short odds for B2B!

So, this trade and draft period we've brought in:

3 rucks (Grundy, Ferris-White and Verrel)

2 Key forwards (Jefferson and Schace)

1 Key Back (Addams)

And a mid and a mid forward.

After losing 1 ruck (Luke) and 1 Key forward (Weid, 2 if count M Brown).

We also lost Jayden Hunt a HB or HF.

Majak Daw a Ruckman/Forward

Oskar Baker a mid.

Toby Beford a small Forward

Fraser Rosman who was recruited to be a winger and became a key back.

All up we have fixed the ruckman area where we were a thin and strengthened or key forward stocks, along with a classy mid replacing a Hunt with a Hunter.

Overall I reckon we have a better balanced squad and a better squad alround.

He actually looks a better version of that Jackson fellow we selected a few years back.

Now that would really be the coup of the millennium!

This kid Verrall looks like the type to develop over the next 2-3 years.  I like his size and ability win the footy.  Not just a tap ruckman.  His highlights show a good footy brain as well. Hope we can keep him interested and happy whilst maybe not getting a MFC game.  Interesting to see if he gets his body built up that we might have him get a few development games to allow a rest either for Grundy / Gawn later in the campaign around rounds 18-20.

I’ve got a very good feeling about this kid.
For what it’s worth, I hope we spend some time developing his forward craft, as I think he could readily make a power forward spot his own.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
