I think itโ€™s abundantly clear that the decision was made some time ago that Jefferson would be playing out the year on the VFL. ย

I suspect this decision was made giving equal consideration to his physical and psychological readiness. ย Heโ€™s undersized and, until recently, seemingly down on confidence. ย Heโ€™s spent time building confidence, now he needs to build himself physically before heโ€™s a chance in โ€˜25. ย

Thereโ€™s a lot of JVR in this preparation.

ย

not really. Goodwin said a few weeks ago 'he is in the picture' at the selection meeting and intimated hes looking likely for a debut soon just dont know when exactly. having a poor game doesnt help his cause though. Theyd also know from training how he's handling things.
looks like next year now but they were happy with his last 10 weeks or so of really good development.ย

This is the most on the money post I've seen in this thread.ย

I personally think it's somewhat of a perplexing decision that we extended his contract out so far given some of what has played out, but there was a clear decision for made that Jefferson would not be playing AFL this year. There were several considerations around this, so the constant debate around his debut this year is largely a moot point.ย

We shall look to see how he continues to develop. For mine, next year is an incredibly important year for Jefferson - though that is essentially pointing out the obvious.ย

He went from a mile off it last year to looking more than handy in the VFL with a heap of scope for improvement.

He was always going to be a long term project. Needs a big summer and has to dominate VFL and get some games, but itโ€™s far from make or break.ย

I doubt heโ€™ll ever have the physical dominance to be purely an attacking force so to get the best out of him we have to develop his tank, his pressure and work rate and his uncontested game.

He has to look at players like Gunston and replicate his style of play using aerobic running patterns.

He has a good game in the VFL followed by some poor games but he has the tools to become a good player but he needs to develop them, I would try him on the wing for a while like AMW on the backline.

Yes, I tend to agree. If he builds his tank and body over preseason, I can see him in a role not dissimilar to Fritsch, Melky or Gunston. Keep him away from being a go-to key forward.ย

If you compare him to Nate Caddy who has spent 1 year less in the AFL system you would be concerned.

Caddy already shows great potential in the AFL.

Too early to call bust but would need to show way more next seasonย

I feel like this sort of comment is a bit unfair.ย  Most key forwards don't come close to hitting their straps until their early 20s at best.ย  Caddy was always touted as someone ready to go year 1.ย  Jefferson was always going to take extra years - he has a different frame and different style of game.

The fact that he has come a long way in the VFL this year is an indication that he is going the right direction.

I agree the club have taken a cautious approach and decided to give him a couple of VFL seasons and another pre season. If we were a bottom club he would have played but i support our clubs position to ease him in.

Also Goody has made it clear in a few post game pressers that he intends to play JVR, Petty and Turner. That looks like it may well work out well.

If we can squeeze Jeffo in next season we may be able to move Petts or Disco back?

You may be right and I hope for his sake and the clubs he starts to blossom next season.

You are making a comparison with a pert ย developed AFL player of ONE season.

Caddy is physically more ready but still needs another pre season and will reap the rewards in 2025 and onwards.ย

Despite his Junior record Jeffo is at least another season needing physical growth and probably a great start in the VFL next season.

He may come back ready for AFL but his pre season is crucial and his different style of play he will be known for. He has come ahead this season more than most anticipated and could still be cherry ripe for a debut in early 2025 depending upon our forward setup and his performances in practice and pre season games.ย

He has got a forwards skill in him and like Fritta feel he will at some stage make his mark in the AFL.ย

Hopefully 2025 may be the year.ย

Get of Jeffo's case!! showed SOLID development this year and will debut early next season and be a very good crafty player for the MFC

Which means Goody's delusional obsession with playing finals this year means that great forward Petty 6 goals probably gets another gig. BUT Simon dont you realise we are sinking!ย

Proof is now in the pudding. PF, your foresight of the recent past summarises the season that, for us, is now over.

Kicked 23 and 27 goals from 20 and 17 games.ย  For a teenager.

Just look at what Treacy is doing for Freo this year, his 4th year and starting to flourish.ย  Jeffo to me looks to be a jeremy Cameron type, once he builds his tank.

High roaming forward.ย  If he can be even close to Cameron we will be happy, but that style.

whilst i think they're quite different players in terms of their skillsets, fwiw head to head comparison of jefferson vs caddy in the vfl in 2024...

matt jefferson: 17 games, 29 goals 19 (with 2-3 games played in the backline), 9.4 disposals, 3.5 marks, 1.9 tackles, 54.2 fantasy points

nate caddy: 8 games, 11 goals 9, 10.6 disposals, 4.4 marks, 1.5 tackles, 56.4 fantasy points

Has anyone laid eyes on Jeffo in training or anywhere lately?ย  Just heard Richo on the radio yesterday talking about everyone else but didn't mention Jeffo once...anyone care to venture a guess as to why?

I'm constantly on Jeffo watch but have seen nothing recently.

Been in mush brain protocols for the last week or so, so not much to watch

On another note, if Jeffo kicks 10 during a Casey match sim but no one is there to see it, did it really happen?

Funny you should say that.ย  At training today I thought Jeffo finally looked like he belonged, and trained like it.

Ahhh I didn't know that, my bad, glad he's training and glad he's looking the goods.ย  Just thought it was odd Richo didn't mention him at all, made me a bit sad actually I wound the clip back and forth a couple of times thinking I'd missed him talk about Jeffo but no, just didn't get a mention.

Glad to hear he's training again!

Can you reconfirm that he trained today Fritta? I thought he was on concussion protocols till at least Friday!

Good pick-up, @Young Angus. That does seemย rather telling, given who heย didย mention, and how he mentioned them. Hopefully, though, this was just because of how Richardson was led by the questions (the asker of which probably wouldn't know a Jefferson from an airplane).

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isnโ€™t a standard conceptโ€”itโ€™s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's ย six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his teamโ€™s unfulfilled potential rang true โ€ฆ well, almost.ย
