Welcome to Demonland Matthew Jefferson

Team selections gave been an absolute disgrace for the best part of two years.

Utterly bizarre that you can name Jefferson who's actually got the forward craft as an emergency for two weeks straight in a side that's struggling to kick goals knowing that finals is completely out of the equation.

Don't change Goody.

Petty was miles off AFL for months this year yet he was still selected. If we had consistency I would be far happier, but I do also believe Jefferson's form over recent months has been very close to warranting selection - Clearly, given he's been named emergency numerous times the club also believe he's good enough to play AFL if needed.

I'm willing to be patient as I know he's a longer term prospect, and being such can be hard on a young person, but "miles off AFL" he is not.

Balanced post.

Played a few good games but he WAS playing as a forward and rarely kicked goals.

Highlights yet another massive fail at the selection / player management table from Simon this year.  The year of the Petty obsession (up forward... just send him back if you aren't going to stint him at Casey).  Has cost the team badly in so many games.

The Petty obsession effectively had us playing a man down up forward for most of the season!!  And we wouldn't have been the only ones that noticed.  The players have a brain, eyes and only so much tolerance / patience.

Fence, if you truly, truly love Jeffo the way you say you do, surely you'd prefer the young man made his debut in 2025.

WHEN THERE IS A CHANCE THE HOPEFULLY NEW COACH OF THE FORWARD LINE HAS SOME CONCEPT OF HOW ONE OPERATES RATHER THAN DUMP THE LAD IN THE SHIITSHOW CURRENTLY MASQUERADING AS OUR ATTACK !!!!!

Fair point but again.... we ain't playing finals and much of this is on the mids / HBs (Nibbler a rare exception on occasions) who often just hack the ball deep instead of looking for holes to kick into leading lanes for a forward to run on to.

And those holes have been there on occasions during the seaaon.  Our mids / HBs just don't pull the trigger very often.

Maybe they have no confidence that any regular forwards will hit up at the weighted ball?  Not sure why with Melk in the side although he hit the wall post the Bombers performance.

There's JVR and Turner.  I've seem Turner push into these spaces on occasions and take a grab.  JVR also ...at least when he ain't getting smacked up at CBs!

Maybe it's on the forward coach.  Or maybe this is also how they're trained by Mcqualter/Simon (ie; umder instruction)

Either way this ****show as you call it needs fixing.  We are now three seasons on from 2021 and the ****show rolls on unabated.

But if he is playing?

Goody said in the media that they want to play strong footy through to the end of the year, hence minimal changes. It would do even more damage to our brand and ability to land recruits through the trade period if we were to get flogged in the last 2 rounds.

Would Jefferson cause that? probably not, though we've already exposed many youngsters this year and realistically, he'd be replacing JVR, Petty or Fritch, who in my opinion would offer more this weekend.

I think he should’ve been selected as he is still agile enough to play a lot of positions. Getting some experience in the seniors can come in any form. Deep forward, floating forward, half back etc I just wanted him to get a feel for the speed and power of the big league. Give him a nudge for the preseason.

One of the stranger non selections in the Goodwin era

Deadrubber hidden away in Gold Coast

No May, so can swing Petty back to give Jeffo a run

Makes too much sense perhaps?

There might be some (non-adverse) circumstances relating to his selection. The failure to play him, despite him signing an extension is pretty perplexing and one of the stranger decisions by the club IMO.

I'm going against the grain on what people have said about Petty this season. Now, when he first came in he WAS pretty much useless. He was simply a tall target to act as a foil for JVR, and to be frank he was next to useless when it came to him. When he did get chances, he fluffed them.

BUT I genuinely feel that the second half of the year hasn't been as bad as what people have said. He's been getting his contested marking much better, and his follow up work has actually been very good for a big man. Kicking for goals has still been a big problem and has cost us, there can't be ay doubt about it. But he's been close and he has actually been a solid contributor, dare I say it I think he's been working well with JVR and Disco.

I think we need a new forward line coach, and I'll be filthy if Stafford remains. But if we're able to get a good forward line coach, I don't think he's got nothing to work with. Quite the opposite.

That all said, I see Petty going back to defence once TMac and/or May retires.

I think today showed Jeffo isn’t quite ready for AFL, but he’s made great progress this year.

He really needs to go away and put on size in the off season and continue building his tank. It will be up to him to do this though given the time off.

Has he taken hold of any games at vfl level?
has he ever been named in the best?

or has he just managed to find space and kick 3 or 4 on occasion.

I mean look at today Ben brown kicked 6 and mcaddam kicked 4 .

jefferson barely influences games yet, he has talent but he is so raw I can’t imagine him getting a game anytime soon and I’m okay with that .

be patient and give him every chance

He’s kicked bags on numerous occasions, so I don’t think this is completely accurate. But he’s not ready for afl level yet.

Jeffo is not ready yet.  Still in development.  He’s a nice young man but needs to be more physically aggressive in a contest.  Jeffo needs a huge pre season in the gym and on the park.  He’s 50/50 right now.  As a first round pick, he was a big investment… not just a punt.  We will a little more patient.

Bringing out the receipts after one game of the year where our talls decide to kick actually goals. Don't worry, I also have a heap more saved under my belt as well.

Only took 23 rounds to finally fire a shot.

If Goodwin is correct in wanting to build cohesion with Petty, Turner and JVR then why sign Jefferson him to a contract extension.

Based off those comments he'll barely crack a game next year. (Sorry Pickett)

Jefferson still has areas of his game that are poor at VFL level. Tackling, chasing, field kicking and strength are the main areas for improvement.

He has to rectify these because offensive ball movement in the AFL is much more structured and he’s not going to be the focal point if he plays for Melbourne. Look how often JVR, Turner, Melksham and Petty block for each other. You almost see none of that in the VFL.

While I agree it’s taken Petty a long time to get going, he has looked pretty good these last 6 weeks or so. Re Jefferson, you still need depth and developing players on your list and who knows, if he has a massive pre season and is ready next year we may want to get him in and move petty back.

Which result are you pointing to? Brown’s 6 goals or the 87 point loss?

There is no chance Jefferson gets promoted on yesterday’s performance. He showed a lack of intensity IMO.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
