It's like that, I guess. I am a huge Lou Reed and Raymond Carver fan. When I read biographies of them, I wish I hadn't. I have Marr's White biography....

I'm a big Lou Reed fan too. I had a crack at Raymond Carver 20 years ago or so. Maybe I've grown up enough to try again, maybe not.

It might be just me, but having seen Van Morrison both here and abroad - what a grump! I'm not there for an intimate experience with the muso, but FFS, he could at least say hello.

My simple and biggest lesson from the Patrick White Diaries is don't. It's really quite deflating and I immediately had no further interest in reading/rereading any his novels. So enjoy them for what they are!

Anyway, back to the humour that is St Kilda!

So has this Brett Ratten thread turned into Ross Lyon now?

Honestly who cares. Close the thread. Such a irrelevant footy club.

Imagine the bloke writing up the Ross Lyon contract.

So.... onto termination clauses...

With 6 months to go you can shaft us and go to Freo???  What?!

St Kilda suck. They’ve even made it hard for Ratten to get another job now because they left his sacking so late. Garbage club. They deserve Ross Lyon.

I reckon Brett should apply for the St Kilda Senior Coach position...

We were that club before intervention and Paul Roos. I really feel for their supporters. They don't deserve this. Rebuild then rebuild then rebuild then rebuild.

Sound familiar?

They're not irrelevant, they are essential to a vibrant competition as are Norf.

Be angry at the clubs that seem to get gifted a ride by the AFL.

Maybe there's a new thread. Would the demons have won a flag without AFL assistance? Mmmm

This. I can never understand why people want other clubs to be inexistent. A rich tapestry is the AFL, and we don't get to laugh at St Kilda if they move to Tasmania. I still miss Fitzroy.

I never finished Voss. Carver was a short story writer who died in 1988 or so. He, more than anyone, has influenced my writing...He was great at celebrating the ordinary things of life: bottom line domestic stories...

Yep, kitchen sink dramas. One of my favourite films, Short Cuts, is based on a collection of Carver's short stories. The Australian film Jindabyne by Ray Lawrence, also a good film, is based on one of the same short stories used in Short Cuts

I love Carver. What's he got to do with Brett Ratten Sacked by the Saints? 😁

The dramas will continue.  From the article:

“They’ve brought in Geoff Walsh over the two men Lethlean wanted to run things. They’ve basically knocked back his first envisaged structure of the footy department.  “Now they’ve decided they want Ross Lyon to coach..."

It looks like Lethlean was overruled by Bassat and the Board and  Lethlean has a subordinate (Walsh) he didn't choose but appointed by the President.  Lethlean sandwiched in the middle!  He had better watch his back!.

I have it on good authority they’re strongly considering  welcoming back Nick Riewoldt, BJ and Lenny Hayes as players. Baldock has also been discussed although there is some  debate at board level about his ability to run both ways in Lyon’s game plan

The in laws are st Kilda supporters. Decent folks all round except when at the footy. Went to a few saints games with them and oh boy were they feral. A real eye opener

they were happy for me when we won last year so I’d like to see them win one as well. unfortunately their list is full of spuds and the game has moved on from Ross the boss. They’ll be closer to bottom 4 next year rather than top 4. Another rebuild looms

Ross Lyon and the Saints deserve each other.

Total mystery how this club has ever won a flag. Massive overachievement that.

It began thus, Jontee mentioning Patrick White's letters:

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
