Extra "MAGIC" Round in 2023?

Demonland

This makes complete sense, they want an equal comp with no home ground advantage so they play this extra round in one state.

I assume the rest of the fixture is balanced and fair yeah? The draw will be random with teams pulled out of a hat??

Pies playing at Kardinia park next year?

The AFL are turning our sport into a circus. Just create a fixture as fair and even as possible please!

What is a magic round? how is it magic? playing on B grade ground with no crowds and getting injuries?

People say it replaces practice games?  We will just have more intraclub games, we still need to prepare the players for AFL footy.

I find it embarrassing.

Practice makes perfect, but not dollars so ...... be gone!

So transparently greedy by the AFL.

I’m assuming we share $500,000 and not each receive $500,000 as this poorly worded tweet suggests.

I don't think the ambiguity about the $500,000 is the biggest crime against the English language in Tom Browne's tweet. By my reading, the Magic Round was played in SA yesterday afternoon. Where's the write up of the result of our game?

It’s all about the media PD. With an extra round added the GF will be decided by the team with the best injury luck / planning.

* each team will play 23 games over 24 rounds next season.

* It will add at least $500,000 to each club’s coffers with some of that money to be used to boost the soft cap on football departments while players, who have agreed to play the extra game, will also receive a slice of the revenue generated. It remains unclear whether the players will be paid from club coffers or the AFL will provide the additional income.

* Matches will be held at several venues, with Adelaide Oval the primary base.

* The extra round means there will be one less meaningless pre-season game, a boost for players worried about injury heading into the season proper.

On my first reading, I thought this meant that each player would have a choice as to whether they would be available to play the game. On a second reading, I think it's meant to mean that the players as a group have given the AFL their consent to proceed with the structural change of abolishing one pre-season game and replacing it with an extra Home and Away round.

No wonder Tom Browne's earlier tweet had syntax problems. He must have gone to the same school as whoever wrote the above.

It's almost guaranteed that we play them there.

We will most likely play them twice and they won't have a home game against us at the G because we are a small club.

It will also be the usually late in the season game against them because their pub ground is unavailable until round 10.

Only chance of us not going there is if the AFL sends one of essendon or Hawthorn down there.

Round 5 for the abracadabra round according to reports and one assumes that Round 1 is now a week early.

Listen to the whinging if a team draws Adelaide or Port.

We haven't heard as to how the additional round impacts the loose formula for top six playing each other twice etc

Also will the AFL "waste" good games on suburban venues and low crowds

This will be one of the most epic boys long weekends ever.
Fly over from Perf and hire a bus.
Cheap and nasty accommodation in the burbs somewhere.
Beers.
Non-stop Footy.

Do the teams get to wear novelty jumpers and pocket some additional dollars selling related merchandise to impressionable toddlers, or are the gimmicks limited to the fixturing?

I hope the theme songs are re-recorded by whichever flavour-of-the-month pop star is in the country at the time, and the umpires are all dressed like circus clowns.

Now that there are 6 double up games, I wonder if the AFL will change the way they work out the fixture.

The easiest way would be every side plays 2 sides from the top 6, middle 6 and bottom 6 to keep it fair.

My view is they should go even further and schedule the first 17 rounds with no double ups. Then at say round 13 or 14 they can work out who each side is playing a second time based on a weighted average to try keep the draw as even as possible.

It was obvious the Cats were extremely favoured by the draw last year getting to play two of the statistically worst sides in history twice, giving them four guaranteed wins and by an average margin of 69 points.

More footy and more money for the club and people still complain.

We're 10-5 at Adelaide Oval, so this could be a win for us as well quite possibly.

We're spoiled in Melbourne with a semi-Magic Round most weeks, spare a thought for the footy loving fans of SA and WA who usually only get 1 AFL game a week, they'll be rapt with this.

Got to acknowledge the AFL leadership for their one true skill.

Finding out ways to make stakeholders pay for something that was previously a public good.

Now every year the states can get into a bidding war.

I'm glad Gil isn't in charge of the electricity grid or we'd be paying to lean on a street post by now.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
