Spargo has been a wing option when required, and Yep, as a scoring option he is poor too.

    Absolutely.  I don't understand the gripe against Spargo. He is quick in the first 5 metres, has great vision and decision-making. Plays his role defensively harassing and tackling. 

    He was struggling for form in 2019 and 2020, but since then has been very good!

    Just an awesome midfield / wing combination!

    Spargo is statistically the most effective kick inside 50 in a team that notoriously struggles with kicks inside 50.

    Would be great for him to do it more, but it's completely incorrect to say he adds nothing to our scoring power.

    It would be great to see stats per position across the league. I think HF & FO & HhF would be great to see the list in that position and averages. Spargo doesn’t get 20 possessions per week but what do other players average in similar role.

    Stengel got 50 plus as number one small forward at cats our equivalent Kossie got 40 plus, but who is next in the league.

    Fritsch as half forward got 50 plus who was next best in league.

    Spargo as 2nd small forward who plays high only got 10 but how do other team’s equivalents stack up?

    Most supporters have unrealistic expectations on the player and stats when compared to the role they play and the average stats.

    Spargo is always referred to by his height but I feel he doesn’t play to that type (other than using his lower centre of gravity to his advantage to evade as all his size do). 
    I feel he’s in the same mould as jay Kennedy Harris from yesteryear and if spargo like him was pressed to play that first small roving forward role too he’d be found wanting the same way as JKH was. 

    Hunter in form enough to be in the 22 definitely pressures spargo place. As will the emergence of anyone else capable of bringing a point of difference to the hff (seston, Howes, etc)

    If it comes down to Hunter or Spargo then its a no Brainer, Hunter is the more superior footballer in every way!

    I'm excepting big things from Hunter in the coming season.  He should fix our other wing and provide sweet delivery to the forwards.

    Spargo averaged 11.75 and 10 goals vs Miers for Cats in similar position 14.x and 13 goals.

    Who did a lot better than Spargo as 2nd small high half forward?

     

    Brad Close did kick 26 goals.

    I'm a big fan of Spargo and have been a staunch supporter since he arrived at the club.

    But, personally i thought he was disappointing this year.

    He defensive work dopped right off along with many others and whilst he is one of our best ball users going inside 50, we're lucky to see him do this 2-3 times on the day.

    He was incredibly lucky not to get dropped at times especially when I saw a much more dynamic Kade Chandler at Casey level week in week out dominate at VFL level and was also hitting the scoreboard. 

    Big year for Spargo in 2023. If he doesn't find other elements to add to his game such as hitting the scoreboard more and maintaining his pressure then he's simply in trouble for his spot. He's gotta step up especially as he's coming up to that sweet spot of 100 game mark.

    Laurie and Chandler will be extremely hungry this year to take his spot.

    Correct DD but ANB Spargo and Sparrow are all in this together. The trio should have been dropped to Casey at some stage/s and will all have to contend with Chandler Laurie Howes Bowey JJ AMW and  Seston surely in 2023.

    I'll be surprised if one or two of the new breed are not at the end of year in the team in the Finals competing after breakout years.

    I reckon Chandler and Seston and ANB will be the players in the 23 and giving us a whole new look forward line with JVR and a resurgent BBB and Tmac.  Laurie is the other one to watch the new slimmer faster forward dynamo.

    Please note that comparing stats with Geelong is pointless; as the opposition they played skewed statistics towards generating more opportunities, goals, disposals, etc, and conversely less defensive requirements.

    I am very excited over Seston and his potential, but he is a mile away from the senior team and will need plenty of time at Casey and probably another pre season, to build his fitness for AFL football.

    Luckily we now know how to develop players and not destroy them, by selecting them too early for AFL level footy.

    Most important addition in last 24m and already showing having 2nd genuine wingman and one more elite i50 kick will do EONS for the fwd line And taking pressure off Langdon — 2 genuine wingers also means now JJ and Sparrow rotate through midfield to improve our rotation and ensure more explosiveness and horses for courses approach so the duality of this cannot be measured tangibly until about round 8-12 but if he is fit and plays the impact will be immense.

     

    2 elite running, one good one great disp wingers whom BOTH are dangerous fwd and both run both ways is extremely exciting and offers as much as having TMac back, JVR playing & having Kossie play more of a blitzkrieg mid (5-6 CB att) and he and Fritta running back into 50 whilst others lead out  — so many good things happening now we just need some luck

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
