Ok Spargo for all his forward pressure just does not get enough of the ball or kick multiple goals, so he goes out for Chandler.Melksham is not the future nor the now so JVR takes his place. Hibbo was costly last night so he goes out for Bowser. Jordan goes out for Harmes and there you have it for a do or die next week.

Agree on a lot of this, but if we drop both Spargo and Melksham and replace them with a key forward and panic kicker you can forget us taking any marks inside 50.

ANB fails the eye test. He's been a liability up forward for a while. Needs time at Casey.

Sure, he has issues, but however pressure acts are calculated, he's getting more of them than the other smalls.

ANB 22, Pickett 18, Melksham 10, Spargo 9, Sparrow 9.

We need pressure at ground level in our forward half. The best way to measure pressure is pressure acts. ANB is doing this more than our other smalls.

The question for the FD is whether we're better served by replacing him with someone who may provide less pressure, but better offensive drive. I understand the argument, but we've backed in his pressure for years now, and we won't win the flag without forward half pressure.

In contrast, Brown’s 2022 averages are 1.7 goals, 1.3 contested marks, 6.2 pressure acts and 0.6 tackles. So, the Petty for Brown move potentially reduces goal scoring and finishing but brings greater forward pressure and similar contested marking.

Harmes should come back in for Spargo or ANB, who is out of form.

Isn't Optus Stadium a very similar field size to the MCG?

IMO our best football has always been with two tall forwards, but that's usually been when TMac is one of them, as he is able to push up the ground, work his defender over, and create separation for our other tall forward.

I'm not sure moving Petty forward is the right call. He won't have trained with the forwards all year. It's far too much to ask someone who last played as a leading forward three years ago, to be thrown into the forward line with the pressure of finals coming up. Particularly when, last night aside, he has been incredibly important alongside May and Lever to our defensive structure, and has performed at a much higher level than Tomlinson.

Perhaps if we don't get it done this year (or even if we do), we can train Petty as a forward over the pre-season, with cover for his defensive post available in Tomlinson, Turner and Smith (although we've just flipped Smith back to a forward, which IMO is the wrong call).

Harmes in take your pick who drops out and the mobile marking forward won't be JVR I suspect Smith will come in as he and Petty can both play as swingmen if needed

 

 

Can see Smith replacing melksham forward. They love his athleticism and should provide good defence pressure as well as an aerial target. Only played one game forward though so would be a bit of a gamble.

I would love to see Joel come into the seniors but I think he is underdone . We will see won't we !!!!!  Possibly Dunstan will come in and Petracca could play more forward .

Perth is 11m narrower than MCG. 

My view is that the forward line needs surgery and we can’t have as many pressure valves. Playing Fritsch and Brown or Weideman only works if the midfield supply is precise.

Further to this, we need to target Jackson inside 50 more often. He is our best contested mark other than Gawn.

We can thank the afl with their constant byes for that problem with smith. 

We desperately need another key forward but I don’t think that was our issue last night.  We had enough looks but just didn’t take our chances whereas the dirty low pies couldn’t miss and got 3 decisions that resulted in 3 goals from 20m out.  It was a high pressure game with 2 very good teams.  Stay the course people we will be unstoppable come finals.

Maybe his persistent injury issues would have more to do with that. Having said that, he would be worth the gamble as a second tall forward. Or maybe even Petty. I don’t think we can bank on TMac, he didn’t sound overly confident when interviewed by Robbo at half time last night

If not for the bye he would have played at Casey this weekend and had a second game back. The seconds competition is a joke.

Yes, it is what it is. I am sure the club would have had some sort of match like simulation this weekend for the VFL players. I think he is a chance for Carlton

Difficult to see him being worse that a few. 

Smith could be well worth the gamble. He plays small/medium and tall. Quick and can take a good mark. Not sure about his ability to lead well up forward. He could take pressure off Fritsch and we could play both Brown ans Gawn/Jackson forward as well.

Bring Bowey back… best 22, play him in Hunts spot or even up forward. 

Tomlinson to play defensive fwd - melksham out ( Tomlinson is bigger stronger and a trained defender and will be more likely to bring the ball to ground and bring kozzie and spargo into the game)

Dunstan comes in  brawshaw returns to the backline and hibberd is omitted. Brayshaw provides more dynamic defensive rebound options and Dunstan is a contested footy beast so we don't lose as much at the stoppages.

I would also bring in Harmes (a more consistent performer) to play the same role mid/fwd for sparrow.

In :  Chandler & Bowey

Kozzies game and season has to come into scrutiny -  too many time he’s avoiding contact - one handed marking attempt -  tapping ball, kick off ground etc  instead of picking up and absorbing tackle -  he’s naturally hard but has developed soft behaviours that the club needs to stamp out and stop accepting —  because the standards you walk past are the standards you accept.

The biggest change required by quite a few players is…… attitude.  Think ‘hunter’ rather than ‘hunted’ ….. and then all will be fine. 

Something for all us supporters to consider. Are you going to back or bag your team?

Harmes for Jordon and Gus to the wing is my feeling after last nights game too, Though I watched it on tv and didn't get to see how Jordon was doing re holding space, amount of km's - I just felt he was not manic enough when he had the ball and we need a boost in that department.
