Two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because some teams’ fans aren’t as loud as they should be doesn’t mean it’s okay for us to be that way. 

I was at the Saints vs. Swans match a couple of weeks ago and was astonished by how loud the Sydney fans were. They have a huge cheer squad and they had many more fans.

But the Saints fans were also vocal, it was admirable. Their cheer squad is very small but super loud. They have it tough, too. They only had three floggers (in comparison we have 10-12) and a smattering of little flags (no massive ones like us). Incidentally, their storage facility was broken into during the off-season and much of their squad gear was stolen. But you wouldn’t know it by the noise they make, which is bolstered by the noise their fans in general make. 
IT CAN - AND SHOULD - BE DONE!!!

Not likely. I'll be going for sure but with no real enthusiasm at this stage. We are expected to win the real stuff starts in the prelim if we make it

This attendance/noise discussion has been happening on DL nearly all year.

I'm glad people can vent about the desired level of dees support at games.

Maybe its time to give it and the dee fans that do their best, a rest.

Look I'll level with you, I'm feeling pretty much the same. After going to every single home game this year I've suddenly felt flat as a tack. Mate who I usually go with is bowing out this week and I sure as hell can't be bothered with that stupid ticketing system. 

But I know I have to snap out of it somewhat, It's a game of footy with Melbourne in it. Come Fri I've gotta be at my best.

I got the impression that half of the crowd on Friday night were once a year football attendees. People around us were away from their seats for half the game, going to buy beer every five minutes. When they were sitting they were playing on their phones or talking to their mates. They really had no interest in the game, and made no noise whatsoever.

This week's crowd will be smaller, but hopefully more committed.

Had that happened to us, no doubt our Club would’ve helped pay for new gear. I’m not by any means bagging any other club, but our Club is very supportive of the DA. And it helps that the DA is harmonious, unlike some other cheer squads, not mentioning names, one of which may or may not be named after a small domestic feline. 😏

Just seems like a real scumbag thing to do. Stealing coins from a donation tin wouldn't be much worse.

As someone not in the know I'd like to think all clubs support their cheer squads. Of course though the level of support would not be equal depending on who is running things.

You are certainly passionate about this supporter noise Dr G, but perhaps your message needs to be wider spread as I’m sure you are preaching to the converted on here. Just a few general points I’d like to add:

- we are obviously, in the main, a far more conservative bunch than the pies, tigers and blues supporters - but they are not collectively called “feral” for no good reason. Although 80k turned up to Fridays game, there was no condition of entry that said they must make a lot of noise during the whole game. Your highlighted sentence above almost implies there is.

- Think back to 2018 and the 2 finals we played. The noise was overwhelming because the brand of football we played then was fast and chaotic and generated so much fan excitement. As a team this year, we have been playing a really conservative, safe brand of football that is frankly uninspiring. Far too few exciting passages of play per game to really get the juices flowing and vocal chords singing. Improve our game plan and you will see a big difference in the level of noise.
- our amazing cheer squad make an extraordinary amount of noise and it is a shame that it is not more infectious amongst the rest of the crowd. Perhaps if other supporters knew the Demon Army chants, that might assist in getting more noise participation. Perhaps if there was one particular chant that could be taught and collectively voiced (led by the DA) when we need a lift, that might help. Just a thought.

May your voice be joined by 60K like minded supporters this coming Friday, Dr G, as the devastating realisation that our season could possibly come to a crushing end. If that doesn’t inspire noise, nothing will.

I was in M50 on Friday night. Too bloody quiet! At the start of the third quarter, when we kicked those multiple goals, I stood up and shouted at the rows behind me to get involved! They pretty much all (about 3 rows) just looked at me like I was a crazed [censored]. A lack of passion. I can see where Petracca is coming from. I am sick of going to the footy and being shouted down by the likes of Sydney and Fremantle supporters. Seriously! As John Kennedy said, JUST DO!!!!

The reason I'm banging on about it is that I was just stunned at the lack of noise - people around me were imploring the Melbourne supporters to barrack loud but there was just not much enthusiasm other than the brief patch in the 3rd quarter. For example when there was a ball-in near us on the southern stand wing early in the last we'd be yelling support, cheering the players on etc but there was little else coming from our area.

I'm not saying we have to be feral like Collingwood/Richmond but some vocal support would be great!

I agree about 2018, perhaps I'd just been remembering how great the crowd was then and assumed that finally with a decent turnout this year and it being finals the supporters would finally find their voice similar to those two games but it was very subdued and a weird vibe around the stadium (even from the 1st bounce).

All clubs support their cheer squads to varying degrees. MFC is extremely supportive. 

And there’s a camaraderie between cheer squads, (for the most part). Squads help each other out. Especially when a club is playing interstate and may not have all of their gear. Or when they are short of volunteers. For example, at Friday’s AFLW match we were in the race with North’s cheer squad preparing to raise the banner. They had a very small banner crew which means very hard work for the few, we were willing to help raise theirs. This has happened before. On this occasion though, we asked permission on their behalf to grab a couple of North supporters from the crowd so it was all good.

edit: that doesn’t mean we don’t snigger a little when we see a shi*tty banner. 😂

I was happy to stay at home and watch it from the comfort of my couch but my dad bought us tickets so I will drag myself to the game and sit quietly in my seat until the team does something worth cheering. A lot of people on here have it backwards. The crowd makes noise so the team plays well? It's the other way around

I likened our 2022 wins to watching a python devour its prey. Slowly squeeze it to death and then into the mouth for the slow digestion.

Bang bang bang was obviously the exception and I wonder if we will ever see it again

The filth crowd are diabolical. I went to the Pies/cats game, which was fantastic. However the constant calls of "ball" and booing did my head in. FFS!!

Who cares? It does your head in when you're playing them but you need a rabid crowd to intimidate the opposition and get the "noise of affirmation" happening. Look at Geelong, were on the back foot from the first bounce due to the hostile atmosphere created by the Collingwood supporters.

We were front row M55, bobby, and it did seem a bit quiet. Video after Fritsch's pocket pick shows we were sure doing our bit (and my hand carries a fence-inflicted proof of same!) I agree mate. 

We are just not a loud bunch in general compared to the likes of Collingwood and Carlton. 

I attended the North game this year with a best and while it was a poor crowd I thought North were far more vocal on the day. They were getting rough end of the stick with a few decisions so were up and about.

Meanwhile me and my mate were a few beers in were quite loud and vocal and tried to get others around us involved. Crickets unfortunate. 

we were  very loud in m21 until the lead got beyond 3 goals in the last

after that the mood was FLAT
