Simple. If one club uses their sub the other club can use their sub without an injury

That is an interesting idea.  The trouble with 'can't play the next game' idea is that it could endanger players.  For example, coaches might be encouraged to keep a player on the ground with a minor injury (which would be OK in a week), but after playing-on the injury might get much worse. I guess you could argue if the coach wants to take the risk with injuring his players, so be it .

Or how about forget the “injury” rule altogether?. you could have a 23rd man that can only come on when one player goes off permanently. Ie once subbed there is no return to the ground fr the eat of the match. Do it too soon and the club risks losing a player to injury w no replacement.

I thought the that initially the sub rule was in place for concussion only and that if a player was subbed off they would automatically be unavailable for the next week.

Then the rule allowed for other injuries no matter how minor without the week off stipulation.

Perhaps put a 1 or 2 week ban on the subbed off player. This of course doesn't account for the use of it in Grand Finals.

Perhaps they could also release the oppositions subbed player if a club activates theirs. It is only fair that both teams have access to a fresh player.

Just like dropping your knees to get a free it's cheating. AFL has to step in now and stop it. Not sure how you stop it but they have to. The rule was for concussed players when it was brought in and should never have been changed.

They just have to enforce their own rule.  Players subbed off can't play for 12 days.

Interesting concept - it would also mean that guys like Bedford could get a run late in a game without having to spend (I think it was at one stage 5) weeks without a game.

Specifying the number of days could disadvantage teams with multiple short breaks, and advantage those with longer breaks.  Maybe missing one (or two) matches would be a more equable rule.

What a surprise that this could happen with a rule that wasn't thought through properly

What a surprise.  AFL introduces new rule then allows it to be abused or tweaked by those using it... then changes the rule again to counter it's initial errors or to  appease the clubs/masses and/or denies it was ever intended to do what they first indicated was the reasoning behind its introduction in the first place.

Great example .... dissent rule

First half of the season "don't raise your arms like that...50 meters!"

Second half of season...players in ump's face arguing and remonstrating ... "what dissent rule!?.. play on!!"

The rule should be that if a player is subbed off, they can't play the following week. That would limit it to serious injuries.

Agree, or they should just make it sub at will.

I think Tomlinson is our most versatile sub.

Should just rename it the "Tactical super sub" which can be implemented at anytime during game once.....Should be able to be used if someone is tired/sore/injured/whatever.   Farcical rule atm.

@crow_data_sci posted some interesting stats on Twitter regarding the use of the medi-sub. Port Adelaide has had the most players subbed off and play the next week in both of the last two years (5 in 2021, 4 in 2022). Melbourne and Sydney have had no player subbed off and play the next week at all across the last two seasons.

Bump. Again our sub unused and an important player as well who could have made a difference in the last quarter.

And the Pies subbed off a non contributor under pretence of an injury.

Clubs have realized it’s used to get fresh legs on. It was used by the Dogs and by Pies (and I think Pies used it to get the underperforming Hoskin-Elliott off).

Our Coach/s still asleep at the wheel sadly.  Might have made a difference last night.  Not ruthless enough MFC

No, not asleep, but a coach playing by the rules.

Goodwin talks a big game about being ruthless. How about we be ruthless and use the sub like every other team.

  • GAMEDAY: Western Bulldogs

It's Game Day and the Demons will be running out on the field with a new Head Coach, albeit a caretaker, for the first time in 3,060 days when they face the Western Bulldogs at the MCG today. What do you want to see from the Demons in the first match of the Post Simon Goodwin era?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
