He's also regularly lead/manoeuvred under the ball. Has happened in every game he's played in this year.

Yep.

But i wonder i that is more to do with his reading of the flight as opposed to being out muscled.

Read the article referred to below and see the problems with the ground.

Freo were smashed in wet/boggy conditions by GCS and Coll earlier in the season; kicked 4 and 6 goals.  Hence why they want to train there this week.  They have learnt so I expect them to do better.

So it is wet weather football time:  forget long kicks or pin point passes, just get the ball forward deep i50!

We will still win.

Exactly. Freo's game is built on precise ball movement from the back half. Wet weather makes that incredibly difficult. I reckon we'd welcome the rain, despite it being a slog.

Could well be. It's happened his entire career too.

Of all weeks to debut JVR, this is not one of them.

I dunno. I'd be down. We just need a contest. In some ways when it's wet, it's easier to play forward because it's just about creating contests and letting the smalls go to work.

Maybe the wet is the great equaliser A F?

Think it could just be a baptism of fire going up against that backline right now.

Rather than JVR, I'd prefer we increase ground time for Weideman and Jackson from 72% and 69% respectively to combat the tall Freo defenders and to free up Max behind the ball.  Max had to do too much last week.

Articles about Chandler on the MFC site suggest to me that he'll be a starter in Perth.  His quality game for Casey in the wet last weekend, adds weight to this, I reckon.

It's Chandler in but who goes out?

I would have thought Melksham but it would not surprise me if Spargo is dropped.

JJ is out if you can believe the guys on the podcast today.

I'd say it's reading of the flight. More likely needs to go to specsavers than bulk up more.

As often happens, I think people are getting too caught up in the 'wet weather'.

Looks like showers in the early morning but dry by late arvo. 17 degrees most of the arvo, don't reckon the weather will be a factor.

Sounds like you're getting caught up in the weather cobba.

It's been wet all week. It'll be wet on friday. And it'll be a wet game, even if there is no rain during it.

He just played a game in the exact conditions. Forecast for Friday over there and competes hard.

I have not wanted to switch Brayshaw from half back to the wing, but I would this week if Jordon is out. Bowey or Hunt could come in at half back. Spargo on the wing has not really worked.

Happy Eddie Murphy GIF by Laff

The podcast is often filmed before Goody's presser and the Injury report. And they aren't always up to speed on the news at the best of times

Brown out certainly makes selection easier, if we were going to try the 2 bigs together it wouldn't have been this week

where do you stand on the expectation of the move to play two key forwards going forward from now?

I'm still convinced we will end up with the two talls - not sure if that wik be this week now as i cant see Mitch Brown coming into the side, and JVR is a long shot to be selected, at least this week (i have sneaky feeling he might get a shot on the eve of finals).

If BB is right to go next week, and Weed plays ok, i suspect they will both be selected next week

Surely it is t time for JVR - binman, isn't this close enough to be "eve of finals"?  Our season IS on the line, and if we are to roll the dice on JVR surely it is now.

Finally got around to watching Casey and honestly I thought JVR played a great ‘AFL style’ of game second only to Bowey.

Clunked a few marks, chased his back side off, attacked the ball hard and spoiled smartly when he was out of position.

Chandler’s 4 goals were classy but he flashed in and out of the game and wasn’t clinical at other moments.

Lever for Tomlinson.
Gus to the wing. JJ rested. Bowey in.
JVR for Melksham or Weid, don’t know the answer there
Chandler sub

Goody is more likely to bring in like for like replacements than shift Gus to the wing imo. Baker in for JJ could be on the cards, he had a very good game for Casey st the most opportune time

...Unless Oskar's papers are already signed, and they would be if he doesn't come in for JJ on that wing.

I thought teams for Friday night games were announced on Wednesday nights? I mean apparently not, but has this changed?

I agree.

Personally i reckon his two biggest weaknesses are:

  • He often seems to have a half second delay in reacting when a second effort is required. He often makes a second effort (though sadly not always), but because of that delay it usually doesn't impact the contest. Going again just does not seem to be instinctive, unlike say JVR
  • He often seems to misjudge the flight of the ball and therefore the ultimate landing point. Compare him to Fritsch, who reads the flight so well and puts himself in the right spot to mark it. Someone in another thread mentioned they thought he might need contact lenses. I'm sure he would use use them if he needed them, but i get where they were coming from as he seems to have issues with depth perception

Fwiw, Some people are genetically predisposed to lower than average depth perception or may have an underlying physiological condition which impairs depth perception. It is not always something that can be corrected with optical lenses.

One game at VFL level in the wet is brilliant Doug Reemer but not quite enough to convince me he should play his first game at AFL level which is streets ahead of the VFL standard wise, in the wet ,interstate, against one of the most fierce defences in the league right now.

I think JVR would suit great in the forward line as a hard competitor, even if he's a bit raw

Would offer more as a genuine forward target compared to Melk and may go under the radar as 3rd tall too
