Correct. While he’s never going to bash and crash like the big bodies, if he gets his hands on the pill his breakaway pace can create fast forward entries

Exactly, and I highly doubt his kicking inside 50 will be hospital long bombs!

I'm sure there are reasons unknown to us as to why Kossie hasn't been given more runs through the middle this year. Hopefully he does this week and makes the most of it 🤞

Surprised with the negativity, Port dont have a ruck and have been average against top 8 sides this year.

We will bounce back and win this.

You just can't stop the doomsdayers on this site.

To be fair, Lycett is pretty much the only player missing from their best side (I'm not sure Fantasia is best 22 these days).

Against the current top 8 they are 1-6, but their most recent games were an 8 point loss to Fremantle in Perth, a win over Sydney, and a 12 point loss to Richmond at the G. Post-bye they have been better than they were pre-bye.

Having said that, they are 2-5 in games out of Adelaide, with the two wins being a 1 point win over St Kilda in Cairns (in the scrappiest, low skilled game of the season) and a win over North. 6 of their 8 wins have been at the Adelaide Oval.

Amazed that some people are putting stock in Max and Kossie's position in the named side. It means nothing. Brayshaw won't be playing on the wing and Harmes won't be playing at HB too.

Pure and simple, we need our A graders to play blinders, otherwise we ain’t winning this one

Picket Fence reported that Petty and Laurie were absent from training. One has to assume that both have Covid.

Before or after PF's visit??

And Weideman doesn't go missing??

Weideman has been dropped a fair few times from winning sides for team balance and "better" players returning. We shall see..

We need our under performers to step up, needs a team effort

We are the premiers and second on the ladder. If we put this team against a top four side it would be tough

However, if we haven’t got the depth to beat a bottom half side - we are in trouble!

Only trouble is Port are effectively playing like a top 4 side. 8W, 3L the last 11 weeks, after dropping their first 5. The 3 losses the last 11 weeks being cats, tigers, Freo.

We will have to be near our best to beat them.

Petty + Oliver out = $2.52 for Port is probably good value.

Weideman this surely would be "Last Chance Hotel" would much have preferred Mitch Brown! A few on shaky ground!

Me thinks you've been watching too many AFL 'Saints vs Dogs' ads Mr Fence

Not that the magnet on the board means they will play there...

I'm glad Bowey is getting a spell, not a bad first batch of games for the young man.  play in the 2s and get better

Tomo, Hunt and Dunstan coming in show we have good depth.  Obviously we lose quality but we should keep system

Also glad we are playing away, we need some time together to bond

Viney is going to destroy Port. Will be a close game. If Port lose they can't make finals.

I back us in to win a close one

In its own quiet way our season is slowly unravelling. You need a lot of luck to win a premiership, including with injuries/availables, and the Lady isn't smiling at us.

You are really blaming injuries and covid?  We only have one long term injury in T Mac.  Lions got smashed with covid last week and Freo earlier.  Our 'luck' is fine.  We need to work through it, steal ourselves and build into form for finals

How do you reckon Finlayson is sleeping at the moment?

Gawn then Jackson.

We just need to make sure Dixon doesn't injury us.  Maybe start LJ and leave Max for Dixon?

Would love to see how Max 85% at CHF, Jacko 85% ruck would work

Lady luck is nothing more than a blonde Collingwood supporting bimbo it seems.

Great teams can cover the loss of a star player.

And if we can't cover for Oliver as a premiership TEAM, then clearly we're not the team many think we are.

Sides like Carlton and Collingwood have been able to cover the loss of their best players.

If we can't beat Port up there, I can't see us finishing top 4.

Melbourne supporters still have a soft underbelly.

Personally I suspect we may find losing Petty harder to cover

Reading this thread is so frustrating. Let's explain again why Weideman is an emergency and not van Rooyen or Mitch Brown. He's there as an emergency should Gawn or Jackson need to be replaced. As it happens, he could also fill in for Ben Brown or even May or Lever. But that's not the primary reason why he's the emergency.

I can't see Brayshaw playing as a wingman or as Oliver's replacement. With Petty and Bowey out, it's hard to believe we would then voluntarily remove a third defender at the same time. To me, that suggests one of Hunt or Rivers gets in for Bowey, although the one that misses out could be the sub.

Some have implied Petty being out with Covid protocols means he has Covid.  But does he? or do the current protocols include being a close contact of a case?   Anyone know?

In Victoria, close contacts do not need to isolate.

Nor did they the last time he had covid.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.

Just a game and percentage outside the Top 8, the Demons return to Melbourne to face the Sydney Swans at the MCG, with a golden opportunity to build on the momentum from toppling the reigning premiers on their own turf. Who comes in, and who makes way?
