Is it me or does it feel like clubs are playing much more of an unders game when it comes to trading picks this year? I feel like in the past there has been at least an effort on the recruiting clubs to trade in fair practice, but this year clubs have been much more on the side of “take what we want to give you”. We’re in on it as well with Grundy tbh, although that’s a lot to do with the Piea desperation to get Grundy’s contract off their books so his value is lower.

I knew there'd be one. AJ's career was almost finished by the time the Eagles entered the competition, so no real go home factor.

It's all posturing chest beating rubbish. Come end of trade period, most of the deals will likely get done with fair compensation. I blame the footy media and the AFLs thirst for year round coverage. The fact trade WEEK is longer than a week for a start is stupid. The AFL just wants to get as much media courage as possible, and so everyone who cares is subjected to days upon days of braindead blokes making stuff up and destroying any semblance of respect they once held with the public. Listening to someone like Adam Cooney or Kane Cornes make up hypotheticals and start rumors is the equivalent to papercuts to your scrotum while having your head bashed with a mallet.

The trade period should be 1-2 days and clubs should be forced to deal quickly and decisively without all the pissfarting around shuffling late inconsequential picks to try and save face. The point system and rules in place have made trades become too complex. It should be as a simple as Luke Jackson for pick 2. Instead we get Luke Jackson for part of split pick 2, plus a second round, plus a future first round, with a second round coming back... after 1.5 weeks of madness after they've had 12 months to prepare. It's pathetic and takes. a lot of shine away from an otherwise great game. Anyway rant over :P

Geelong are certainly adopting the recruit locals appproach.  Most of their top end recruits in recent years have been 'locals' ie Greater Geelong region.  Nearly half their list will be 'locals'

Dads were very big on loyalty. Stick to your club. They are your new home.

Nowadays the kids are told, just do you're time and you can trade back home.

The issue clubs face is free agency.  If there is any chance of losing a player it is better to trade then lose to free agency.

Sometimes to clubs stop trying to keep a player as they know the player wants to go and it then becomes getting the best trade.

It's not odd and it's not unique to AFL 

Loss making businesses are often valued far more highly than those consistently profitable - all on the basis of earnings potential not having yet been proven

Same story in the AFL - what's unknown is often far more valuable than what's known

Everyone wants to strike Gold...

 

 

GWS have a strong draft hand. No doubt Vic clubs will be picking them all off in a few years.

You might have been brought in a time when housing was affordable on a single income. We've now had 31 years of underemployment in Australia (ie Australians needing more than one job to keep up) and a housing boom since the late 80s that has locked out two and a half generations from the housing market.

The world isn't as simple as you or your mother portray it. In the words of The Waterboy, "well, mumma's wrong again!"

True, but we may be able to use that to get further up the board to pick up a Sheezel or Cadman.

Given we would expect to have a pick around 15-18 as our first next year it may be worth it.

I'm judging him on his output over the past 4 seasons.  Has good skills but has not lived up to his hype or pick 3 billing imo.  Not consistent, questionable mentality.  I reckon Kozzi is far superior to him, so I guess he is worth pick 2?

Spot on. No one requested a trade home 2 years after the 1965 draft. Because there was no draft, no trades and no national comp! 

Plenty of country kids went home after 15 minutes in the big smoke. Probably no better example than Gary Ablett Snr.

Big name and big money recruits in their mid to late 20’s came across from WA and SA, had a year and went straight home too.

He’s actually been impressive this season, I think he’s shown enough to suggest he’s about to make the step where potential becomes reality in a similar way to Shai Bolton

The trade period should be any time between a week after the grand final and the first preseason game (with a December deadline before Xmas/New Years).

Create a system to contract young players for years 3 and 4 and that incentivises extensions beyond that. Only the truly homesick will ask for trades in the first 4 years and clubs will trade them, no one wants a player who really isn’t happy or won’t sign for longer.

Otherwise out of contract players should be free agents. You can’t trade a player who isn’t contracted, it’s nonsense. Free agency should open October 10ish and most of the deals would be done within 48 hours.
