I think our best forwardline will be....

Smalls create space, create pressure, havoc and repeat entries. 

Prior to the bye we were sitting the ball on the heads or BBB, gawn, Weid and hoping they would clunk a pack mark. 

We have averaged over 100 points since the bye. The reality is we only need to score 85 to win.

I wouldn't be surprised if he (OOC 2023) gets a chat along the lines of:  'we are not sure what the future holds re senior games so you might like to look for new opportunities this year'.

iirc he came on a very good $ package so it would free up cap space for next year's contract renewals.

On Petty:  He is a defender.  He is May's understudy.  Leave him there. 

Tommo came in on 4yrs 500k if i recall correctly, you'd imagine that was front loaded given Trac, Oliver, Gawn, Viney Brayshaw AND Harmes werent resigned past 2023 at the time iirc therefore i'd imagine they would have had the money to spend at the time knowing they had big deals to secure towards the end of his deal

We also recruited May, Lever and Langdon around that time so there is a lot of $ to balance the sal cap. I guess there is no way of knowing if there was front/back loading and who was affected.

Regardless, on a $500k package I wouldn't expect too much to be front (or back) loaded.

Petty is a more than capable defender, and with the likes of May and Lever, they form a very good defensive unit.

Look what happened when Trac played more minutes forward, it freed him up and he broke the shackles. The same would happen with Gawn. Play Jacko #1 ruck for a while (if he kills it, it will only drive his trade price up if he goes), plus Gawn as relieving ruck is a daunting prospect, and would take heat off Brown in the forward line.

Our “forward line issues” are another media myth. 

Our system doesn’t rely on fwd line dominance. It relies on 2 way running, an elite defence, and best in comp midfield. We don’t have a scoring issue, when we are up and running (ie every week other than the loading impacted games) 

Most under-estimate the positive influence of a B.Brown just bringing the ball to ground when 1 on 2, or sometimes even 1 on 3. 

 

Other teams like Geelong or Carlton rely on fwd line dominance, and I think some in the media get confused and think that means we also need to have dominant forwards.

If we had a second Petty I'd be all for it, but our backline relies on the near-telepathic cooperation between the defenders and Petty is doing an exceptional job. Both May and Lever can do their job much better because Petty is doing his so reliably.

Tragic for Tomlinson, but then again, Tomlinson could force himself into the team to cover a number of others so it is far from game over for him.

Agree with this. I think we learnt Sat arvo, that we don’t need Maxy’s taps in the middle. Get jacko in there, as an extra midfielder, and utilise Gawn’s marking strength fwd line and occasionally back.

The games we're lost this year were in large part because we had defenders missing through injury or suspension (loading was also a factor in those losses)

Moral of the story. Don't mess with our defence. Leave Petty where he is

If we had the luxury of Disco Turner with 25 games more and was performing well at senior level or say Joel Smith to take Petty's back six role then it would be more tempting - however we are not in that position

I really hope that when Joel Smith is fit again (fingers crossed) he gets a run in the forward half - there are few options down back without more injuries and I think he is too good to be languishing at Casey. He would imo offer a more competitive aerial option than BB with greater mobilty and capacity to apply F50 pressure. This is obviously dependent on TMac's availability 

Tomlinson is not the answer in the F50 imo he is not strong overhead and not quick enough to be effective on the lead

Sydee  - Interesting thoughts re the forgotten man, Joel Smith.   He has had a (small sample) history as a forward I believe in preseason games with some success.   If and when he recovers from his latest injury I would think coming back through Casey as a forward may be just what is needed.  He would certainly struggle to break into our defensive unit, at the moment.

Tomlinson may still be regaining strength and confidence in his knee, and remains a solid back up tall defender.   Perhaps it could be worth trialing him (or even Disco) as a forward next preseason.

Possibly because he is nowhere near the player he was before. He would struggle big time playing Finals as a defender

From the moment he revealed his marking strength and competitive mongrel, I committed to believing he’d eventually be a forward, a la Neitz, Tmac. Still think it’ll go that way, but this year’s not the one. Maybe next year, when Disco Turner can take over his spot down back.

Agree, look what happened to our result's when May went all in at Entrecote.

You wouldn't dismiss it as an option though within a must win game and we need a spark,  likewise May moving forward

With Tom back for another season next year and Turner evolving down back there are more options. Getting another key forward remains a priority though and a depth ruckman.

... and leave the forward line static in injury-affected selection moments - far too conservative for modern football, too often. Yes, we have discussed this option far and wide on this board and the prominent potential that exists with Petty is plainly that his game has gone impressively well, improving match by match due mainly to his skills depths; albeit strong in the backline - yet we have regularly noted that at earlier times of less experience within a spattering of opportunities at selection and placement - Petty has done particularly well as a forward free from timidity (Weidemann) and bodily limitations (TMac, BBB, the other Brown) and learns his role very quickly, capably and presents a genuine threat to opposition arrogance.

I think with his marking ability and his mild success was down forward in the past. There is more than fair case that Petty could make it as a forward. However, Petty is May's heir apparent, He continues to take steps to be coming an elite defender.

Our long-term success is predicated on our defence remaining strong. We know that we've got Lever for years and a lot of younger small defenders. Developing a player like Turner to come in and play as the 3rd tall while Petty prepares to play the number 1 allows us to have a defence that will last for years. Moving Petty away now requires an emergency.

I don't think we're at that point, and frankly, I don't really think we're close to that point. The last two weeks we've tried a shorter forwardline and managed to score north of 90 both times, On top of that, it's encouraged faster ball movement which is also better for our mids. And allowed Brown to get more involved again even if he's not clunking big marks. So far this year we've only given up more than 80pts 3 times, As long as we can keep our average score above 80, I don't think the forward line is as big a problem as people think it is. 

Doesn't mean it's not frustrating at times, but a constant reliable defence is more important than the luxury of 1 maybe 2 forward contested marks a game. Use him as a swing man in game if we need but other than that just let him continue to develop and he may well turn into an All Australian as few years from now.
