Gotta say I agree with Fagan and Goodwin and thought McInerny and Jackson shared honours.  That's a credit to jackson because Oscar is a very good AFL ruckman but it isn't vote worthy in my opinion.

it's contextual tho

first game leading in the ruck as a 20 year old, won a heap of ball, hit the scoreboard, and was influential around the ground

it was a pretty terrific performance

I understand why others have Jackson in their votes, but his opponent was also very good, so he just misses out. Also, Petracca's game was so much better than his last few, even though I think I probably gave him votes last week. Last night he was back to one-grabbing the ball and kicking with real penetration.

6 Boulder Viney

5 Clarry Choo Choo

4 Harmes

3 Lever

2 Dogga

1 Hibbo

I also thought Dogga and Omac had a great battle all night but it doesn't diminish Jackson's performance. Actually reminded me of the days when you'd get those 1 v 1 duals with two greats trying to out-do one another and both ended up being their team's best players.

Jackson's influence both around the ground and even in ground ball contests was immense with 10 contested possessions. Comfortably in our top 5 players IMO.

Maybe not worth a vote, but  Hibberds  blanketing of Charlie Cameron was outstanding.

At last some recognition

Hard to understand how some left Jackson out of their top 6 altogether and most others ranked him low (relatively).

With this high impact performance deserves higher ratings:

  • 21 disposals
  • 10 led to scores
  • one goal
  • 18 hit-outs
  • a team-best nine tackles
  • 89 per cent efficiency by foot
  • 10 contested possessions
  • six inside 50s.

6 Viney  --- has he ever played a better game?

5 Lever --- would have deserved 6 but for Viney's extraordinary performance.

4 Oliver --- slowish start but very influential in the rip-roaring demolition job that followed.

3 Petracca --- imposing presence but still has a few issues with kicking at goal.

2 Jackson  --- caused plenty of problems with his athleticism.

1 Everyone else --- this was a tremendous team effort.

Has Viney ever played 21 games ( since our run started in Round 20 last year) as well ?  He is nearly right up with the Big 3 (Gawny Trac and Clarry) that's his value to our team. Also has a lot to do with fitness and a great pre season.

Sorry it's only 20 games I think missed due to injury earlier this year.

Good point LH  Thought Trac did so much in the packs as inside when you look at his game, kicking is still a bit off but he's 80% near his top and back in business.

Thsts why he is a real chance to be there when the whips are cracking in Sept.

Wanted Rivers  back before game still do but no one deserves to be dropped not Bowey either.

I understand your point, but the one thing he didn't do was curtail the influence of his primary opponent. That is why I marked him down and didn't put him in my votes.

Fair comment.

Wondering if that was his team role as he would never beat the Big O for hitouts or marking contests.  The impression I had was they let Oscar do his thing knowing we had him covered in other ways.

As an aside, it will be interesting to see the coaches votes.  Tough job to choose this week as this thread shows.

In his presser, Fagan described Viney's game as "unbelievable", so it's a fair bet Jack will get the maximum.

By a country mile.  I'm still in awe of Viney's game.

I was thinking the 'minor' placings re Jackson etc.

Great team performance. I thought Brown and Weid were vital early. Sparrow excellent too. JJ rock solid. Pickett electrifying. And after the early blunder Fritsch was very important. Tracc really got rolling too. May gave up a couple of goals whilst still dominating.

Loved the way he approached it. He didn't let Cameron get goal-side or in behind all night and was more than happy to give up a mark to him in front around the 50 (Only happened once from memory) if it meant preventing out the back stuff.

Maybe, just maybe, it actually was worth a vote..

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
