Well they did promise a day grand final to make up for the one we didn't get last year. So there may be some shred of integrity floating around headquarters that they haven't managed to expunge yet.

I'm okay with the compromise that we win last year's flag in the twilight, and this year's in the daytime.

Peak viewing time on TV is between 6pm and 8pm. When more people are watching, the TV stations can charge more for advertising. When advertising revenue is higher, broadcasters pay more for TV rights. And if more is paid for TV rights, clubs get a bigger financial distribution from the AFL. That was the essence of Eddie's argument on Footy Classified. He just had trouble articulating it because Caro kept interrupting.

Personally I like twilight. Great atmosphere towards the end (lighting, fireworks, sunset etc.), and still not too late for me to travel the 1½ hours back home to the country. I thought the 2021 GF was great timewise (and not just because we won).

Quite happy to go with the majority public sentiment though.

I don’t think there are very good reasons for keeping it during the day. Public sediment is often used as a pejorative and in this case I have to agree. Twilight is fine for families and better for the game financially.

It will get there in the next rights deal anyway…

I've been a strong advocate for the day grand final ............ until yesterday.  Eddie made some good points which then aligns with:

A twilight grand final still suits the kids - the can be in bed by 7.30pm , 8.30pm or even 9.00pm (older ones);  BBQ's are still on the cards either leading up to it in the afternoon, during half time or for dinner, Last year we did the kick to kick before the game when it was warmest and during half time; and though not a bonus for all - the delay in drinking was actually more conducive to a good night of celebrations.  THE BIG THING though, is it's more suitable for interstate fans, parents of kids with other commitments (casual jobs such as Macca's or sports such as basketball), Tradies or retailers working Saturdays, etc.
It also becomes easier for other sports fans who may be attracted to the one-off event (upon arriving home from their non AFL activities). 

The crowd will still be a sell out regardless (unless it's the Giants v Sun's or Power)!!!

Night grand final though - Yuk;! It is not kid friendly, BBQ friendly, and possibly even conducive to good footy (dew).  Celebrations start to late, and the gap between the start of the day and game is intolerable; Oh and for some who still start drinking in the early  afternoon, then their ability to watch the game 4-5 hours later could become significantly inhibited!!!!!

After being fortunate enough to attend both the preliminary and grand final. From a ‘pure’ footy perspective found the ambiance of the PF more enjoyable. MFC’s control of the stadium PA audio-visual setup was definitely a factor. Of course the Demon ascendancy made it a relaxed evening at the footy. Game intervals were relatively free of the razzmatazz too.

GF was a much more wound up affair. After all there was a fair bit riding on it. Not a moment was without ‘entertainment’ happening, pre-game, quarter times, half-time was crammed to saturation point. Add the actual game which seemed almost like an adjunct to the ‘show’. When the smoke cleared half way through the third it was all about the footy, fortunately a triumph 57 years in the making.

I prefer a day grand final. It's so much better socially. Go over to a friends for a bbq, drinks, watch the game, and then after it's approaching dinner time (not that ppl are usually hungry) but people can still socialise after the game into the evening. When the game is at twilight it's like 'yeah come over at 4pm for some doritos?'. And when the game is over, it's an awkward time and people just head home afterwards. 

Day granny is much better. But I understand financially it may not be. I think the AFL should just focus on making the umpiring standard better before worrying about time slots. The game is borderline unwatchable with the low standard of umpiring at the minute and not helped by Brad Scott ridiculous rule changes.  And then they wonder why crowd attendances are low...

Death, taxes and complaining about umpiring.  I vividly remember growing up fans complained about umpiring.  This year its non stop complaining about umpiring. We all follow other sports. And yup, fans complain about umpiring. Ill stick my neck out here and say 20 years into the future people will complain about umpiring. (And i will complain about people complaining!)  Maybe one day, we all just let it go, accept the best team wins the flag and move on with our lives.  Liberating.

As long as we don't have to wait 20 years for a chance to win the Premiership Cup again, personally I don't care what time the game starts. If it was my choice, I'll take the Day Granny at 2-3 o'clock.

The best team doesn't always win the flag. And the best team often doesn't win any given match due to poor umpiring which can impact any individual game as much as 8 goals.  The NBA doesn't have this problem. But with a best of 7 series in finals you can't really argue at the end of it. Our finals are a once off match.

Not sure LDV whether you are being a little flippant about the Eddie / Caro argument about the advantages ( benefits) of a day or twilight Grand Final on Wed Footy Classified or are in fact very serious. 

To say that Caro kept interrupting is a complete distortion of the facts. As usual when Eddie gets on his high horse about a matter he totally is biased or very strong about he raises his voice and shouts above all others until they generally just give up and he gets the limelight to pronounce with arrogance his opinion. 

Footy Classified with Eddie as compère always has an edge and underlying tone of unless the Compere can show off his "extra knowledge" or views no One  else should comment as they don't in fact  know enough about the subject.

Its hard going as Eddie still snidely remarks about matters of the last 40 years of his life either in journalism or as Pies President or just a supporter. He needs to completely get out of the footy scene and leave others handle it or go for the AFL Commissioners or Gils CEO job. 

The flashing on the screen of him in the super box  boring Gill by standing over him near  his face at last weeks Friday night Pies vs Dogs game is so typical of Eddie. To be honest 4 year olds have better manners than this out dated and largely now disgraced ex President who is ruining whatever legacy he left in our great game back in the old grandstands at Victoria Park or somewhere in the Holden Centre.

The discussion seems to be about a "day" start at 2.30pm, a twilight start at 4.15pm (or thereabouts) or a night start at 7.30pm-ish. Would a 3.20pm start be an option? Not a traditional grand final start time and not quite twilight, either. But it would be consistent with the start time for a lot of day games.
