Be interesting to see if Mitchell tries something different or just goes with the manic forward pressure. They really are a very small team, but they do have a bit of pace to them. Surely Brown would be far too big for Frost.

    The oval shaped ball means the spin drags the ball down quicker which means you have to flush the ball in the ‘belly’ for shots past 30m out and that makes the ‘around the corner’ kick just as hard to master as the drop punt. 

    Kids should definitely do more check sides and bananas and barrels though- they all have their place in the game.

    No doubt a place for that with set shots on tighter angles Jont.  I'm not saying Pendles Rugby kicking tutor was right or wrong either but the proof of the pudding was there to see yesterday.

    Reckon there'd still be room for individual preferences/styles/flair etc.

    Just regurgitating what Pendles said happened during their training in the lead up to Anzac day.  I'm sure there was a bit more to it than just running in straight at the target but who knows.

    Someone mentioned some stats on the traditional set shot accuracy vs round the corner and the round the corner came out ahead but only marginally by a few % points if i recall correctly.  Still if there's any slight advantage to be had i guess there's no reason why you wouldn't take it if you have the skill set

    In our truly horrible years I went to a Dees v Hawks game at the G on a Friday night with a couple of colleagues. They were both Hawks supporters and insisted we sit next to the cheer squad. I slammed 6 pots before the game at Y&J as I knew I couldn't watch our team sober in that environment. 

    We got smashed by a huge amount, no surprise

    What I have not forgotten is how nice the Hawks supporters were towards me. At one point I had my head buried in my hands and a couple came up and patted me on the back and told me things will come good etc. and at the end of the game a few shook my hand for sticking to the bitter end. 

    I bare them no ill will, although I still hope we smash them

    Are you sure they were actually Hawthorn supporters Hatchman?

    The type of Hawthorn supporters I remember from back in the day were over boisterous, arrogant AF.  Memories seared in my brain as a kid from walking out of games at the G or Waverly after any kind of loss and them telling us how good they were and how crap we were - and this is even during the mid 90s when we had an average to good side.

    I guess it's typically of life that we remember the 1% and they are the ones that ruin it for the majority.

    I was at the 88 GF and for ALL of the last qtr some big loud ugly hawk supporter next to me was spouting hate fr the dees and directing some of it at me. It’s an enduring memory as the game itself was fully crap enough. I thought at the time, and since,  why waste the joy of winning a flag by being such a [censored] head? 

    Good to know there are some decent hawks around. But i’ll still extra enjoy thrashing them if we do.

    '87 Prelim was where I learnt to hate the Hawks supporters.  What a pack of flogs. As W11 just said, why not just enjoy the victory.

    The way we play now, reminds me of playing the Hawks over the years. I remember getting excited in the few games that were relatively close. 'We're a chance here,' I'd think, only to watch the Hawks temporarily shift out of second gear to take the game out of our reach. I hope we smash them!

    Except the games we played them in 2016 I think actually did mark something of a turning point in our level of competitiveness and belief and the start of their decline. 

    We played them early in the season and got within a few goals of them in a hard fought game.  Second time we played them late in the home and away, we beat them quite convincingly.  I think it was from our performance in that game and his relationship with Todd Viney if I remember correctly that helped convince Jordan Lewis to make the call to move across and join us.

    From that moment onwards, our trajectory has been mostly in the upwards direction (including against the Hawks) and Jordan Lewis went from being a loathed personality (simply by being a Hawthorn player), to one I now quite enjoy listening to.

    Fatigue has a huge impact on kicking as well

    An update but not much optimism post our covid news:

    • Just need another 10 to go down and we are a chance
    • I still expect us to lose because they're clearly the top team and we're clearly inconsistent and around the middle. But we've shown we can play some very good football. We'd really be wanting to test ourselves here where as the stakes aren't nearly as high for them. If we're lucky we might catch them napping.
    • Jackson, Pickett and Petracca would be massive losses.
    • Big Maxy and Clarry should probably pop around and give them a cuddle and make sure they're ok.
    • May can't drop past with the beers as well
    • The worst thing for Melbourne would be for covid to run through the squad in finals. They really should all get around to Jackson's place for a session. Get it out of the way now
    • Hopefully another 7-8 cases for them over the next couple of days.
    • So a 12 goal margin has gone down to 11

    They seem fixated about playing us on a 5 day break, conveniently forgetting we have only a 5.75 day break from a night game meaning post match recovery etc goes into the early hours of the next day.

    Hawks have beaten 2 top 4 teams from last year and lost to Carlton by a point. 

    Clearly they can bring a challenge to us. To me, they are a bigger challenge than the teams that park the bus and don't attack. They may unlock a weakness by actually trying to win the game

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
