Weed is in the starting 18 so he plays.

It's a Sunday game so we only have the squad.

Surprised after all these years that there are people who still don't understand how Sunday squads work. Goody has actually done us a favour by naming JJ, Jackson, Harmes and Sparrow on the extended bench. Those 4 plus the starting 18 will be the team and we don't even need the usual 24 hours to speculate.

Not sure what that means for TMac's role going forward, but Goody must prefer to have him in the 22 as some sort of Mr. Fixit rather than to omit him. I don't think the three amigos will work together in F50.

Goody has already said we wont play 3 key forwards. I wont put any thought into the 18 named on field and just absorb the outs and wait until the final 22 is announced tomorrow. Shame about the 2 out for protocols but it is what it is. Will be interesting to see how they cover Viney’s midfield time.

I have lots of faith in the jordans and sparrows of this squad.

4 out of 6 premiership defenders too.

Not ideal but go Dees.

The protocols ending wouldn't mean that anyone in them before then just gets to walk out though I wouldn't think.

I think you will find it does

Terrible luck if Viney and Lever are just close contacts and missed the end of the BS rules by 1 day!

Even without the close contact rules, AFL have their own individual mandate they run to.

You would think Dunstan for Viney, but then I look at the interchange and you can’t drop Harmes, Jackson, Sparrow or JJ

Correct so the inters will be Harmes, Jacko, Sparrow and JJ with DUNSTAN to be medi sub!

Yep. Only VIC and NSW rules are changing tomorrow. The AFL will probably keep the H&S protocols all season citing ‘an abundance of caution’, even if the rest of the states and territories also ease their close contact rules.

Aren't the 18 named LOCKS in the 22??

Smith plays half back.

Tmac takes lever's role.

Gus goes to the wing.

Jordon and Sparrow rotate through the midfield, replacing viney.

So final team has two changes:

Viney and Lever out.

Smith and Brown in

Bedford medi sub.

Weed has been handed a gilt edged opportunity.

If he has a big game, where his intensity and contest is elite he can make dropping him that bit harder.

Ball in his court.

There are two realities and it seems that with different line ups on the AFL site to that listed by the MFC we are between those realities.

In a strange way it perfectly reflects the world at present.

Reminds me of one of the Coodabeens most famous sayings....

When two big men fly only one will find Nirvana

Final teams by tomorrow evening i believe so the starting 18 is still open.

Gut feel instincts (ie; throw a dart)...

Smith possibly coming in for Lever,  Bedford for Viney with Sparrow / Harmes to share more of the Viney role between them?  Mostly Sparrow.  Harmes still playing his usual hybrid MF/HF role with a little more bias toward MF minutes?  Bedford to get a bit of MF time with these two but more as a high HF/Mid when these two are off and or pushing forward.

Don’t think the players named on the ground can come out it’s Brown and Smith in for Lever and Viney, with Jackson, Harmes, Bowey and Pickett on the bench

Goody pulling a Beveredge?

Will probably have to wait until Casey play on Saturday to find out the starting 23, that is if there are no more surprises in the mix.

Footy live app has Kozzy out too. I'm hoping that's a typo

it's the richmond pickett that is out (acc to ch9 news)

TMac won't play back with Smith and Tomlinson waiting in the wings.

If they lose a KPD during a match, maybe as a stopgap, but not as a selection.

I agree with other posters that Tommy Mac should replace Lever on the backline, and Brown/Weed forward.

Re Viney. I don't rate Bedford or Melksham. So the other inclusion would be Dunstan, Smith or Tomlinson. The Club seem to love Smith, so I guess he'll get the nod. Poor Tommo.

Doesn't Weid being named in the 18 mean he's definitely playing though?

Good point and I’m not sure tbh.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
