CHANGES: Rd 05 vs GWS

No Hopper, Davis, Green or notable ruck.

No excuses, would like to see us put them to the sword and get our offensive game going.

What’s Brown doing throwing elbows? The last player I would ever expect to do that.

Incredibly lucky to just get one week.

Not his fault. His arms are unusually long.

I’ll be honest, I think we cop the one week for that. Stupid and out of character for Ben, must’ve been a frustrating night but that’s no excuse and it’s bloody frustrating.

If the umpires have a duty of care, has the AFL empowered them by giving them a rule they can use for this purpose? For example, hasn't the AFL been saying for some time that they will be clamping down on off-the-ball incidents?

I detest the off-the-ball niggle whether it's pushing and shoving or something worse. I'd rather it was stopped at the source thereby removing the need for some players to feel they have to retaliate.

That stuff that was going on against Max off the ball is totally unacceptable and against the spirit of the game. I hope the club reached out to the AFL about because that is how this BBB sort of suspension happens. A player getting roughed up and riled up over treatment that shouldn’t be permitted.

Even if what happens is retrospective (ie club gets fined/soft cap reduced following season). Either it’s dirty, and shouldn’t be allowed.

Absolutely, cop the plea and move on.

T Mac survives another week

Hopefully some good delivery inside 50 so we can see how Weed and T Mac perform

I think both Sam and Tom will be wanting to buy a lottery ticket, I hope the coaching staff take them aside to make it clear this is a big opportunity for one of them to cement their spot.

I can picture no change into GWS.

In comparing BB and Ryder penalties:  Jonathan Brown pleaded with AFL general manager of football Brad Scott to reassess the penalties handed out in the VFL...“It’s an action in an elite competition, Scotty, fix that up. Fix that up.”  afl-greats-staggered-by-pair-of-contrasting-bans

J.Brown showing his ignorance that BB's action in the VFL was assessed by AFL MRO rules and is ignoring that high impact (Ryder) with concussion is judged more severely than low impact (Brown).

Just look at the Tim English hit on Blakey a few weeks ago.  Much worse action than Ryder but got off without even a fine.  That is the question the should be asking the MRO to justify.

English also gave a similar forearm  across the snoz of Townsend on the weekend and probably broke it but zip outcome...."play on".

Townsend immediately retaliated with a slap across the head of English and have a feeling he was free kicked.

English, the Bont and the Doggies in general appear to be very much a protected species and have been since 2016 season.  Not sure why.

What's their free differential now ??

Jon Ralph seems to be running some form of campaign to get Ben Brown’s MRP suspension increased to 3-4 weeks. That’s ludicrous when you look at the outcome. Not normally into conspiracy theories but he is with the Herald Sun and didn’t they run a nasty little campaign against our coach in the off season?

It's ok...Ralphy is used to getting most of his calls wrong.  What a [censored]

Wouldn't mind seeing Jackson up fwd more with no bbb.

Max was back to his sublime best last week.

I dont mind a bit of argy bargy Pates. But agree there is a line - the problem with most rules in the AFL is that we as viewers and supporters like the 'grey' but if you skew too much one way or another, its when we get angry. Problem with the 'grey' is that is super hard to umpire and introduces a little bias and interpretation. But you want to afford a player to break a tackle, to nudge the opponent under ball etc. My fear is that we are making a B-line to a non-contact sport, given new concussion research is quite alarming wrt to degenerative changes in the brain and the linkage to depression and suicide.

Re: Maxy, what they need to look at more is the whacks Maxy gets across the back of his head everytime he goes up for a contested mark. That is what i'd be ringing the AFL up about.

Agree.

The guy ran directly at BB and was 70m away from the ball. The generous take is that BB was protecting himself and was clumsy.

By not penalising the off ball sniping this stuff happens.

Maybe some of the other older posters on here can help me out. Back in the day there used to be a rule that you couldn't bump or shepherd unless your opponent was within 5 meters of the ball. Another rule that's been forgotten amongst all the changing interpretations each year. I'll bet it's still in the rules.

Its more or less called a block these days. But is very inconsistent because its open to interpretation.

I believe that was correct ...is that no longer the case?

Well it's certainly not being enforced if players are being blocked 50m off the ball, if it's still in the rules should be easy to police.

The only references I can find on the internet definitely refer to the 5 meters.

Exactly.

The hypocrites who bleat on and on about the head being sacrosanct turn a blind eye to those opposition ruckmen who regularly clobber the back of his head in boundary and in marking contests. It is actually disgraceful.

You can tell by the immediate reaction he hasn’t meant to get him high. Very similar to Gaff on Brayshaw, thankfully without the damage.

Pretty clear what the Willy defender is doing too. Bump in to Brown, keep him outside 50, give his team mate a chop out and even better if you can draw a free kick too.

The umpires failed to recognise the old amateur league 1, 2, 3, in other words.

Wonder if Petty is a chance of returning as early as this week. Goody in his presser said he’s physically ready, they will just wait to see if he’s AFL ready after today’s main session.

I really hope so. He makes our backline so much better. A very underrated player imo

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
