If M Brown has a good game today for casey he must be a chance to replace TMac

    And Fritsch was worse, should Dunstan play full forward too?

    Hunt wasn’t good but he was part of a defensive unit that gave up 10 goals from 60 inside 50’s including only 4 goals after half time.

    Unless we have a defender to replace him with I can’t see him going anywhere. Particularly not replaced by a one paced midfielder who got chopped from the Saints

    If Weideman has a really good game today then Tmac's position must come under serious consideration right?

    Even if Hibberd is fit, they won't bring him straight back in after missing 4 weeks of no match play. He'll need a full game in the VFL to see if his calf can get through before he is considered in the AFL.

    If there is one player I'll be keeping a close eye on today at Casey it's Deakyn Smith. Speedy half back who's got good poise and skill.

    He's the one I want putting pressure on Jayden Hunt.

    Even with all our injuries the current backline has only given up 21 goals across 2 games….can’t see too many changes no point risking players who are doubtful when the existing team is getting the job done

    I would like to see a positional change for Bowey.

    Langdon hasn't played to his normal level lately which is probably because Salem isn't there.  They are a wonderful link-up combo. 

    Bowey played an excellent and attacking game so I would like him to play on Langdon's ie the attacking, side of the ground rather than the defensive side.   Bowey has the vision, ability to stop and prop and the kicking skills we need on the attacking side.  On the attacking side he would be in a better position to take May's kick ins as Salem normally does. 

    We are missing Salem and while Rivers was the person to replace him no-one has really stepped into his role.  The closest we can do imv is to put Bowey on Salem's side of the ground.  That would enable Langdon to get back to his best.

    Harmes was solid. I think Harmes, along with Sparrow and Jordan, were all significantly cleaner and better than the second tier GC mids.

    I am very keen to see how Deakyn Smith develops, as I can see him as a Salem type off half back. Of course he needs improvement and consistency, but I think he is a chance for an unheralded player. 

    Cox and Merrett finished on crutches yesterday.  Merrett's injury reported as 'minor, at this stage'. 

    For us, Rivers' heavily bandaged leg at the start of the game didn't bode well.  He looked very proppy late in the game.  Hope Gus' shoulder is ok.  He looked a bit shell-shocked (pain, not concussion) when he came on to replace Rivers and even forgot his helmet.

    I’ll be really surprised if they pull any levers on the talls (TMac). I don’t think you can make decisions for talls based on a game that really didn’t suit aerial contests and I think Goody largely errs on the side if “if in doubt, leave it alone”, especially when we’re winning.

    I don’t think he forgot his helmet, seemed more to me that he’d cast it aside and didn’t have time to get it, because Rivers came straight off. I’d say his return to the ground was very hastily arranged (“quick, get back on now”) given he’d only been off for about half a second himself.

    Melk 2018? Membrey would be ideal, as would Will Hayward or another mid who can be genuinely dangerous forward. Honestly I’d take my chances with Mason Wood or Jake Waterman. Or even another Harmes or Sparrow who’s big and strong enough to provide some aerial contested work and has speed to pressure. 
     

    With 2 rucks, Brown and Fritter it makes Tom a luxury. And when he’s on it’s a great luxury, but he’s now played a string of ordinary games as a forward really from about 2/3rds through of last year. 

    And Tom’s always been a confidence player. I’d give him a reset week as the sub and a little rest of the body rather that continue with the ordinary results.

    There’s no such thing as attacking and defensive sides of the ground, and Salem certainly doesn’t play on one or the other. Salem plays as the highest defender and depending on what his opponent does is often loose off the back of the stoppage. But he has no control which side of the ground the stoppage is or that the play comes from.

    If Salem goes to his left more it’s because he’s a left footer. But the very next quarter they’ve changed ends and Langdon is on Salem’s right.

    The suns played a great zone on their home ground on a slippery night and used very good wingers on Eddie. We didn’t get our usual bounce out of the backline due to inconsistent midfield pressure, good suns forwards pressure and a depleted backline.

    Can't agree with the first line.

    It isn't because Salem is left footed.  When the team changes ends the whole team changes 'side' but the formation stays the same.

    One thing which was really obvious was the aerial contest - it seemed like whenever we kicked to a contest (Max, a lot)), they punched back in the direction where the kick came from and they had multiple players at the drop to extract and clear 

     Not sure if just something from the night but happened a bit

    You can't be serious, he leads well and kicks it ok as well but you have to catch the ball ;it's part of being a forward. His body on body work in a pack makes Wattsy look like a brute and if someone is even looking at him he gets the fumbles

    Ins and outs will largely depend on the fitness of Hibbo and Lever and if there are any standouts out of todays Casey game.

    Bedford seems first cab off the rank for the smalls.

    Hunt most likely out

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
