What was that last 50 for?

Trac got disappointed and the umpire didn't like that, especially when Trac looked at the umpire.

Shaking your head = 50

Shaking your head and staring at ground = 6 week suspension

50m penalty for shaking your head while looking at the ground

Looks like it’s mandatory to smile when you get a decision against you! Ludicrous that’s about four 50’s for head shaking.

This is a Melbourne vs umpires game on steroids. And that is fine. Everyone can see it. We won a flag last year against not just the best teams, but no rub of the green. No umpire or team, or individual can take that from us. Out game plan is designed to just keep playing to win.

8 goals from 50 meter penalties to Carlton

Is anyone really surprised that the AFLs continued tweeking, linked to the incompetence of the senior umpiring panel would lead to the catastrophe that we are witnessing tonight, where a player has lost the right to emotionally respond to a disappointing outcome with facial gesture and body language????

Lol, wonder how many people are shaking their heads on here while posting about these farcical 50s.

This is just absolute cr@p. Umpires getting high on their own sense of worth.

If players can’t do anything even remotely considered demonstrative, then umps shouldn’t be allowed to talk back to the players (needs to go both ways).

AFL doing a stellar job of trying to get people to respect umpires, with this level of ‘officiating’ going on. Just wait until someone gets done for remonstrating with their teammate and the ump thinking it’s all directed him.

Typical AFL HQ overreaction. Pathetic.

Small man syndrome will be off the charts this year with the new dissent rule.

The whole AFL world will rebel if they get more games like this one.

8 x 50's in 3/4 is just ridiculous.

Melb 9.7-61

Carl 14.3-87

Just when you thought the umpiring couldn't get any worse. The Petracca 50 happens. They are pretty little petals these poor excuses for umpires. Time for Gil to get common sense umpiring. We have been terrible but the difference has been the umpiring. How may 50's have we given away. I thought there couldn't be a worse umpiring game than the Bulldogs game I have now seen it. Carlton aren't that good the umpires have allowed them be great.

Players know the rules and will just have to get used to this showing frustration. Maybe instead of swearing just let out a yell to vent or swear under your breath.. It's going to be so hard for players that have a bit of a temper.

But it needs to be consistent. I do not want to see a Dusty or Selwood or Dangerfield getting a warning or something. After watching tonight every player should now know to just shut up.

Carlton: 14, 3, 87

Demons: 10, 7, 67

1 min into the last.

Petracca and Cerra clearly laughing it up about the new interpretations by the umpires.

Kind of funny that Fritsch is one of our better players on their non preferred

On the money.

Umpiring like this disgusts people rather than pleasing them.

Seriously.  These new rule interpretations are just crazy.  Will they be consistently applied throughout the season?

He's dropped a few marks tonight but nothing wrong with Fritchy's goal kicking. He's a top 50 player for sure.

The interesting thing is that it was mentioned by a few umpires last year that we were a very respectful team.

Looks like the frustration is making a difference as Carlton arent getting pinged.

This is what practice games are for I guess.

[censored] i hope not. Will only cause more and more supporters to become disenfranchised and drive them away from the game.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
