Angus Brayshaw Re-Signs Until 2028

Demonland

Recommended Posts

This signing could win us the 2022 flag.

there is no doubt some bad habits have been creeping in and some selfish play, less willing to do the off the ball stuff that made us so good last year, not as strong with defensive running. Then a big name player looks at all options and chooses to take a huge pay cut and play in positions he ideally wouldn’t for the team.

actions like that can filter through the whole club and could really see us quickly return to our absolute best form.

If there is any doubt that Gus is not a gold digger with an inflated ego:

"...But industry sources said Brayshaw, who has been more satisfied playing at half-back than wing, could have earned easily above $800,000 over the same six-year term had he chosen to play for the Bombers, Fremantle or another club and had accepted much less than was on offer..."

"Brayshaw said he had taken a careful and considered look at the options before him, before deciding on staying with the Dees, with a number of factors at play, including the culture being built at the club, the list, and the long-term re-signing of key teammates".

"Melbourne has everything that I really needed to tick this one off. I love my teammates, I love the coaches, I think we’ve got a great list where we can compete for finals and premierships and this is the place where I believe I can become the best player I can be,”

You are just plain wrong…

Why is reposting the entire press release proof I'm wrong? Before free agency guys of Brayshaw's standing would do well to get a 3 or 4 year deal. Since free agency that has exploded out to deals of 5-6 years being far more common. None of that has anything to do with Gus' leadership, play style, character or anything else.

Fantastic news for Gus and for MFC and all their supporters.  THANKS GUS.

And ... we won't have to rename the Gus n Gawny podcast.😀

Stupid contract.

We’ll be paying him to podcast or play for someone else way before it’s done.

One paced, can’t kick, can’t man up. What are we thinking?

A panic move by the club because they’re sad LJ is leaving.

Congratulations mate. 22 facepalms must be a record.

It amazes me how someone could have such high conviction for something based on almost no information.

The information we have on Brayshaw's contract is:

  1. It is over a term of 6 years.
  2.  .............

How can anyone have such strong opinions based off such little information? Is that the level of evidence needed for you to be convinced that all of these (proven) competent football people are actually idiots? Is that the level of evidence you have for your other strongly held opinions too?

No need to read the whole thread as the latest table is always duplicated at the top of page 1 of the thread to save people wading through.

The quick answer to your question is look for the image.png.2e3b95e34910198ddfd43e9d7c3157f2.png against the names.

No worries

I'm not so generous re the description of good players though!

B+ or better is a good player in my view and we'd have about 12-15 players in that category (and I rate LJ as a player who could get to at least B+ level)

Anyway, it looks like the rest of the good players are contracted up so now the only real issue (for me, anyway) is whether LJ stays or whether we get adequate value in a trade

And if the destination club in question is Freo I still don't believe they can compensate us properly unless there is some sort of elaborate swapping of players & picks

But this discussion belongs on the other thread

You know better than the Club, even after I point out that you are completely wrong on the circumstances of Angus’ contract.
FMD you really are a piece of work.
Guys like Brayshaw don’t come along every day. They were always worth long deals long before Free Agency appeared

How are all the panic merchants who assured us he was on the way out doing today?

I mean really, who cares.

Just be positive. Panic merchants love the club as much as I am sure you do.

Perhaps the panic merchants were simply anxious supporters who were worried that Gus might go. That’s okay. He has not. Time to be happy and for many, relieved.

Again congrats to the club for their astute management during this trade period.

A website question; do facepalms add to, or subtract from ones "reputation"..?

Love Gus and always thought he would stay.  A player does not immerse themselves in a club the way he has and just walk away for cash.  I find the whole narrative about the money he has left on the table a bit of a furphy.  He has not signed on for nothing, he will still be incredibly well paid for a 26 year old and because he is a smart guy I am sure he sees a bright future for himself after the boots have been hung up.

Gus is a keystone in our team in multiple areas of endeavour and conduct. It is such good news that he will remain a Demon - yet there was little doubt that he would stay in the red'n'blue. We relish and deeply respect your confirmation to remain a Demon, Gus; we can now work as a Club towards another Premiership, this year!

Oh, that’s supposed to be a facepalm?

Every time anyone does it to me I just assume it’s a hand humbly covering their face as they bow to my magnificence.

Every now and again an old thread is resurrected and I reckon everyone here has the same reaction ... 'What the hell did I say back then?' Cold sweats as we scroll!

Bring on Fremantle!

It's a must win!

do we have any idea what the new deal is? I’d guess around $600?

Yeah you're right it's much less time.

It's like a journal, occasionally you want to see what you were like but quite often it's a part of your life you'd rather forget!

Nicely put.

The two comments this week from Gus that were aligned was the SEN interview when he talked about being a defender and he loved the group, but then again today he said the same but named most of them, May lever Salem and Hibberd, as being a '...team within a team...". and how he loved that concept. The second version seemed heartfelt and was at odds with speculation he wanted more midfield time etc.

He also said he loved his coaches, and I wonder what his thoughts were after the Rutten meeting.  Did he realise the strength of the team we have, Goody, Yze, Williams, Chaplin  etc? would be fascinating to know.

This decision, along with his 3rd quarter heroics in the Gf puts him right up there historically IMO

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
