The other lens to this i think we cannot look past is the pressure it then puts on MFC to let LJ go in order to keep Brayshaw. Others have mentioned a conflict of interest here given it’s the same player manager and perhaps a ploy by Freo and the management company to give them some advantage in negotiations.
 

If that was ever the case, and I wouldn’t past player managers to sink this low, I’d be absolutely filthy.

    Player managers must sometimes drown in conflicts of interest.  I wonder if they have any code of ethics  to cover cases like the Brayshaw/Jackson one.  (rhetorical wondering I fear)    It's not just a simple case of doing their best for each player independently.

    i think their code of ethics is also referred to as their bank account

    I think it is a simple case.

    Managers do talk to each other as well and have a fair idea what is happening around the clubs and if they didn’t, they wouldn’t be doing their job properly.

    If he knows Jacko is leaving, he then gets the best price for Gus by the usual means, which includes interest from other clubs.

    FWIW I think Jacko is clearly gone and Angus will stay for about a 5 year deal.

    I don't think it can be that simple Redleg.   Do they have ethical standards preventing them revealing to player A what may be a confidential matter about player B without clearing it with B first?   And what if he doesn't know Jacko is leaving (say) and that he;s probably staying? Does he tell Gus to ask for more money elsewhere - that leaking out may negatively affect Jacko's negotiations.    They really need independent managers in such cases.

    Then you will need 800 managers, one for each player. Otherwise there is no way of stopping managers knowing things. Of course they do. They all talk to each other as well, as I said.

    It is that simple.

    The Manager doesn't have to tell Gus exactly what Jacko is doing, he just uses the info himself and tells Gus to leave it to him.

    No Manager is going to go blurting to his clients what others get, unless it is public info.

    They just get the deals done, all helped by inside info, which is part of their business skills.

    Say a Manager has 4 players at one club and they all tell him the Coach is hopeless, obviously he would use that info to steer other clients away from that club.That is part of the job and nothing wrong with it.

    Which is why I would want a regular 22 player for us as part of any deal, plus a high pick and steak knives, like maybe Meek.

    What a mightmare it turned out to be ... hard to believe that we didn't unearth 1 topliner with all those picks in the top 20

    I accept the whole development angle and we weren't a greatly run club (prior to AFL intervention ... PJ & Roos) but you'd reckon that at least a couple of players could have shone through (?)

    And then in steps JT turning draft picks into gold.  A big attribute of his has been his ability to turn 1st & 2nd round picks into solid talent (and premiership players)

    Brown, Langdon, Hibberd, Melksham, Tomlinson, May, Lever all came to the club using draft picks that would have otherwise been used on 18yo's

    As well as of course drafting 18yo's that have turned up trumps ... Oliver, Brayshaw, Petracca, Jackson, Kossie, Rivers, Bowey, Salem and various others

    JT is a real success story and we have a lot to thank him for

    But I highly doubt he'd be happy if we only ended up with pick 19 for Brayshaw

    And I'm with Redleg, we won't be losing him

    Of course 800 managers is impossible.  And everything you say is true.  But I still see the potential for conflicts of interest (without blurting).  So in the absence of 800 managers, any professional body should have  a code of ethics to manage that and minimise such conflicts.  I doubt player managers do (but of course I don't know).

    edit to add:  Since managers presumably get a percentage of the players income, there is a conflict right there if they are representing 2 players in a Brayshaw/Jackson situtation. Unless of course  they have no incentive in maximising their own income.....

    They might push Jackson to accept less from Freo  (without saying why) to enable Brashaw to get more out of MFC.  No reason to assume this would be financially neutral for the manager.    (For the purposes of saving DLand from litigation :)> I am not suggesting any naughty behaviour by their particular manager, just using those familiar names to make the general point.)

    Sue, they do have a code of behaviour, but as in any business/profession, you just hope they are behaving honestly and ethically.

    I think their careers would have panned out differently if they arrived at MFC now.  All could play.

    There’s nothing I have to go on with this but I think Gus will stay, LJ feels gone to me which hurts but he helped us break the drought so it’ll be hard to stay too mad at him (as long as we get good compensation). Gus always seems to show a passion for Melbourne that’s only met by Viney and Petracca, whether that translates into him staying I don’t know but I reckon he and his manager are doing what Viney did last year. Play the field to make sure they maximise the contract.

    Brayshaws manager back from overseas this week and Melbourne are going to meet with him.

    People are speculating brayshaw will leave because he wants to play midfield. I hope not

      The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
