Picked up 'MAX GAWN - A Captains Diary' for the old mans Christmas present this morning and I'm half way through it 😉😀
Pretty much a diary of the year that was.
We all want to know what was on the players minds during the season and their thoughts as it panned out.
Well this is the ticket.
Gives a good insight into the different personalities at the club also.
I'm up to Rd 16 .... What a great read. 😎

I bet you were that guy who’d buy someone an LP for xmas (back in the day), gently remove it, tape it onto a cassette then put it back in its cover before giving it. 😁

I just realised you may be too young to even know what I’m on about. If that’s the case, ask your old man; he may’ve done it in his time. Everyone did. Well, I did. 😆

I've just finished reading it and judging by his Gus & Gawny podcasts there is no way he wrote it. Whoever did though has been able to articulate his thoughts and feelings very well though.

Ahhh .... I know exactly what ya talkin' about 😉
But the old man hated Iron Maiden 😂

But I learnt the trick from him.
Got a couple Gene Pitney albums back in the day for Xmas.
Gotta say though.... "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" is still one of my all time favourite songs.
So thanks Dad.

Konrad Marshall, who writes for The Age and SMH, worked with Max on the book.

He's the dude who spent a year at Richmond during their premiership year and wrote a book about it, or maybe two.

I bought this book yesterday and finished reading it last night.

It was thoroughly enjoyable and I particularly liked the way he talked about each of the regular senior players who contributed to our Premiership glory.  This is a worthy addition to my collection of MFC books.

There were a few minor errors which I am prepared to overlook given that it's by Max and about Melbourne.  However, it is extremely puzzling that, among the list of deceased former players and coaches on page 135, he includes Steven Armstrong.  As far I'm aware, Steven is still alive and kicking.

I posted this on another thread. Should have known there'd be a near-Christmas specific thread!😄

Our Captain is a master of understatement. His caption for Tom Sparrow's kick for goal in 'that 32 seconds' is "Tom Sparrow gets the ball away". And  for Clayton Oliver's post-goal glory arc it's "Clayton Oliver celebrates a goal".

LOL. Really.

I also wondered about that Sparrow caption, Timothy.

I'm not sure if it is that roost for goal because he had four Bulldog would-be tacklers coming at him from all points of the compass and that image only shows one.  Could just be the angle and how the picture was cropped, of course.

Perhaps it was the way it was written? Armstrong survived but was injured in the 2002 Bali bombings.

"The list of people who have passed away too young is so long" is the sentence preceding the list.

I suspect it was an honest error and perhaps it was meant to read Steven Clark, who died aged only 44.

Received my copy late yesterday and read up to the Swans game. His assessments of team members and opponents is very fair. I am loving Max’s informative comments on all things Melbournefc.💕❤️💙

I'm hoping this is the surprise Christmas present I'm going to get for Christmas from my daughter.

I suppose I cheated! I borrowed a digital copy from the local library and read it in two sittings! And no I’m not a skinflint but as a retiree and having purchased the supa dupa Demons 2021 box set for $139.95 and renewed my club membership I’ve spent my football allowance for the year.

It was certainly an enjoyable read😀.

Just use some creative accounting to shift the book purchase to "cultural/entertainment spend" instead of footy and voila!

Me - "I bought you a book for Xmas."
Dad - "Is it Gawnys book ?"
Me - "Lol  .... Yeah."
Dad  - "It's great, I read it in 2 days."
Me - "Yeah  .... I read yours in a day."

I have been checking out the size and shape of presents under the tree and I think I may have done the right thing by waiting for today instead of buying it.

I went to the shops to buy Gawnys diary for dad for xmas then saw the At Last book and opted for that instead.

Today I got Gawnys diary AND At Last from my dad for xmas as did my brother and sister 🤣

I asked him if he bought At Last for himself as well as I knew what he was getting when he unwrapped his gifts. He said he didn't but he did get a copy of Gawnys diary for himself so I made the right choice on that one

I got a copy of both from my son and that's why I didn't get it for myself, I sort of knew he would.

He also gave me a little football with the club theme song on it. My house is looking like the MFC clubrooms.
