The year is 2045. Los Angeles is now an underwater city and there's a serial killer on the loose armed with a nuclear bomb. Retired hardnosed fleabitten detective Christian Petracca is brought back, against his will, for one last job. But he can't do it alone. His quirky pal Max Gawn is the only one who can help. And the combination to the bomb is only known to missing scientist, Clayton Oliver. Can this oddball duo track down the killer AND find the mad professor, and save Los Angeles in time?

If anyone's seen the ESPN 30 for 30s I always thought Jim Stynes would make a great subject for one of those

Amazon did the series last year but unfortunately don't think they continued it this season

Essendon are about to release an 8 part doco series on the history of the club (through fox footy I think) to celebrate their 150th season

Fox footy also did one on Richmond in 2013 called "the lost years" or something, they've done stand alones on the baby bombers, Adelaide's 97 flag and "keep North South" about the push to send north to the GC

I love this kind of stuff and agree there should be one on the Norm Smith curse and it finally being shattered into 140 pieces last Saturday night

But in all seriousness, it would be a great idea for one of the world's oldest football clubs and how long we have waited. Could be crowd sourced here on Dland.

The oldest, continuous playing football club of any football code in the world. There was a club near Bolton (UK) started a few years before 1858 but they folded after a while.

Waiting with bated breath as how Essendon explain away the drug saga. To some druggie friends of mine IT JUST DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Has anyone seen anything on Foxtel about a Melbourne documentary titled The Curse of Norm Smith (or something similar)?  A colleague told me earlier today that they saw something advertised on Fox Footy. Haven't seen anything in regards to this

Just putting a suggestion out there.

I think it would be great to see a movie or a documentary about the Melbourne Football Club and how we became Premiers this year in 2021 ending our 57 year Premiership drought.

Obviously, I am very biased but I think it would make a fantastic movie or documentary. It could go from 1964 until 2021 looking at all the heartache and pain we have been through. The triumph of 1964, the loss of Ron Barassi to Carlton shortly afterwards, the shock sacking of Norm Smith, the wilderness years of the 1970s, losing a game against Fitzroy but 190 points, big Carl Ditterich who liked to belt blokes, Brent "Tiger" Crosswell who only brought a towel with him to training, the shining light of Robbie Flower, the prodigal son Ron Barassi returning in 1981 as coach. Mark "Whacko Jacko" Jackson and his crazy antics on the football field. The Brownlow medalists in the 1980s of Brian Wilson and Peter Moore. The defection of Gerard Healy to Sydney for the big bucks. The amazing year of 1987 trying to help Robbie Flower to make the finals. The heartache of Jimmy Stynes running through the mark in the Preliminary Final only for Gary Buckenara to kick a goal for the Hawks to get them over the line and into the Grand Final. The year 1988 with our humiliating loss to the Hawks in the Grand Final.

The early 1990s with Jimmy Stynes winning the Brownlow and the amazing antics of Allen Jakovich. The 1994 finals series under Neil Balme and the wonderful feats of Garry Lyon kicking 10 goals and David Schwarz becoming a super star. The almost merger with Hawthorn in 1996 and the dodgey proxy votes to say we voted "for" the merger. The multi-millionaire saviour in Joe Gutnick. Neil Balmes sacking and the embarrassing wooden spoon in 1997. The recruitment of young star ruckman Jeff White from Fremantle and the appointment of Neale Daniher. The 1998 final series and the emergence of stars like David Neitz, Adem Yze and Jeff Farmer. The salary cap and draft penalties in 1999.

The remarkable bounce back to make the Grand Final in 2000 only to be physically beaten up and crushed by Essendon. Shane Woewodin's surprise Brownlow medal in 2000. The yo-yo years of finals under Neale Daniher. The tragic loss of Melbourne player Troy Broadbridge in the Boxing Day Tsunami. The close but just not good enough finals series of 2004, 2005 and 2006. The resignation of Neale Daniher in 2007 and the appointment of Dean Bailey. The years of frustration and embarrassment from 2008 until 2013. The poor treatment of our veteran players like James McDonald, Cameron Bruce, Brad Green and others in favour of a flawed youth policy.

Captaincy for the two Jacks in Grimes and Trengove which in someways sadly hindered their careers with far too  much pressure. The alleged "tanking" saga with former player Brock McLean spilling his guts against us and sanctions from the AFL. The huge amount of debt the Melbourne Football Club was in and Jimmy Stynes taking over as President. The "Debt Demolition" campaign that helped save our club from financial ruin. The freakishly talented Liam Jurrah who's career was like a comet burning brightly but far too quickly. The horrific "186 game" in Geelong. The Mark Neeld era. The regular thumpings and overall embarrassment for the club, its players and its long-suffering supporters.

The turnaround with the appointment of Peter Jackson as CEO. The chase to sign up Paul Roos as coach. The development years from 2014 until 2016 trying to fix our playing list and our club culture. The shining light which was Nathan Jones. The Simon Goodwin apprenticeship. The untimely deaths of Robbie Flower, Jimmy Stynes, Sean Wight, Dean Bailey and Colin Sylvia. The wonderful 2018 finals series. The emergence of Clayton Oliver, Christian Petracca, Jack Viney and other young star players. The unique larrikin and character who got caught smoking on the way to training once and is our superstar Captain Max Gawn who Jimmy Stynes took an interest in. The disappointment of 2019 and the finishing 9th twice in 2017 and 2020. The drought breaking year of 2021!

You gotta admit it is definitely a movie or at least a documentary with that story line right there!

With movies like "The Club" and documentaries like "Year of the Dogs" I think it is a worthwhile proposition for someone considering making a movie or a documentary about the Melbourne Football Club too.

It would be a movie or a documentary 57 years in the making!

Congratulations. That is a great overview of the last 57 years

I haven't seen anything advertised but every year they do a special with the premiership winners. The Richmond ones are still on Kayo. "The Fighting Fury", "Redemption" and "One night in Brisbane". The West Coast one is too, "We're Flying High"

The AFL the last few years is also released coaching audio from the game. Always a fascinating listen. It's called Sound the alarm. Last year they released the Richmond prelim against port Adelaide as well. I'd love to hear our prelim against Geelong as Scott watches on helplessly as Max made a mockery of them.

As for the club, they record everything. I'm not sure when they will release it but they will release some kind of documentary for the season. I suspect that they'll have some behind the scenes stuff lined up to go with the December 5 celebration. At least I would if I was planning it. But as for a full documentary style thing. We'll have to wait. Maybe they'll wait until we finish our three-peat 😉

One thing these all have in common is they are usually released in the lead up to the season the following year. So we may have a few months to wait.

Danny DeVito to play Gawny surely

It’s a shame Richard Kiel (Jaws from the Bond series) has passed on. Slap a beard on him and some Grecian formula and you’d have a great Gawny.

Part of the script was written about 425 years ago. Just look at the parallels in Richard III. It starts with the line, "Now is the winter of our discontent...".  The murder of the two nephews in the Tower is an obvious reference to the destruction of Grimes' and Trengove's careers by making them captain too soon. And the immortal line, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse" is clearly Roos asking his recruiters to draft a stallion called Petracca.

That’s a very clever and nearly original story.

As such it won’t be made unless you can do something that works.

In the big screen adaptation I’d have Tom Hanks as Goody. He’s plays the everyman role well (although he might be a little too old at this stage)

Reckon Jason Momoa could play Maxy

Dwayne Johnson aka the Rock play Stevie May

Hugh Jackson as Rick Lever

No idea after that

Scene: Night. A young man, not yet out of his teens, wearing a red and blue sports jersey with number 17 on the back walks alone outside a deserted sports stadium. A bald man, heavily tattooed, appears in the foreground, snapping his fingers menacingly. The young man halts nervously, but quickly summons his courage and walks on. The bald man moves to his side and a puts an arm around his shoulders, and starts to sing:

Nathan Jones (tenor):
When you're a Dee you're a Dee all the way
From your first handball stat till your last coach's spray

A tall man, with close-cropped hair and a long beard appears on the young man's other side. In the background other football players appear in twos and threes.

Max Gawn (bass):
When you're a Dee if you're under a pack
You got brothers around, and they've all got your back

Marcus Bontempelli (baritone):
The gasoline will be ours!

Chorus of MFC midfielders:
Here come the Dees like a bat out of hell
Weightman gets in our way, Libba don't feel so well
Here come the Dees, it's a hundred to seven
We go bang, bang-bang-bang, it is pure football heaven

Simon Goodwin (baritone):
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Chorus of MFC footballers, coaches, trainers, admin staff, and orange cutters:
Here come the Dees, yeah and we're gonna beat
Ev'ry last buggin' team in the whole buggin' league
In the whole - ever - mother - lovin' - league!

The entire MFC playing list then engages in an electrifying breakdance sequence as the hapless Western Bulldogs arrhythmically shuffle from one foot to the other like a bunch of dags.

FFS, who'd want to watch an 8 part series on Essendon outside of Essendon supporters?

Maybe you'd get a few neutrals that might tune in for one or two, but these series' feel super niche to me. And I make pretty niche documentaries myself.

Strategically, it probably makes sense for FOX (who are going down and need content to fill Kayo) and Amazon (who are trying to establish a subscriber base), but I'm not that convinced any of them would be successful. It's probably why they haven't commissioned any further docs, to my knowledge, this year.

I don't like a doco fiction titled the "Long Road"

From Tom Wills Marngrook, establishing the game and the club, the relationship of football to Australia character and the significant role of MFC, developing the ground MCG, wartime heroes, the glory years, the plunge to despair, individual triumphs, the bottom feeder years unable to struggle back, merger stupidity, performance management(theT time), clawing back, setbacks, the new breed, redemption, finally the road stretches out before us. Success is not assured, there are many divergences, but if we stay true to our current united progress we can return to our prime position in the sporting world.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
