I don't know how long ago he said this, but if you don't have any big-name players, it's hard to drop them.

Watts dropped himself!

If your a Journo with knowing the history of the club, the culture the club did have, you report and over state the issues as you see it.  We did need to set higher standards, we needed to realise potential rather than boast about it.  The club fixed it and we got the result, I doubt there would be many supporters that actually believed at the end of 2020 we would win the flag in 2021, the belief grow took a hit mid year and then gained massive momentum late.

On culture, our club has made some good calls to turn ours around, one club that should have made a call after the last couple of years of turmoil and didn't is Adelaide.  They have a young developing list, Walker should have been walked.

Walker is going to be a distraction for Adelaide next year. Should be roundly booed in all of his games

Never liked him. Overrated player remembered for once kick that led to a grand final where they got thrashed.
No wonder unlike Ayres he never got a coaching gig

Mark Maclure is the biggest of the media dinosaurs I think and his screen time on 360 has been whittled down to just a five minute moanfest each week. At a time when just a year out of the game can see a coach playing catch up what does it say about someone that's been out of it for the best part of forty years. As for his his own club. All fur coat and no knickers, as the saying goes.

Are we talking Gary Buckenara?  The same Gary Buckenara who played 154 games for Hawthorn and kicked 293 goals, won four Premierships, captained his State twice, was named All-Australian three times and was named in Hawthorn's Team of the Century?  That Gary Buckenara?  Make no mistake, he was an excellent footballer.

He did coach by the way, at the Sydney Swans, where his record was very poor.

Yup that’s the guy. Overrated.
154 game? Didn’t even make it to 209. 293 goals is good but hardly a huge record in hawthorn considering Dunstall and Hudson. Captained Victoria? If not so what? Virtually any Hawthorn player in that team was guaranteed a premiership with the team they had. All Australian, his teammates made him look good. We would have been on their interchange. There were way better people on his team. He was overrated.
As for coaching Sydney, they were in the sink at that stage. An Auskick coach could have got the job at Sydney

So are you. Hilarious even 🤣😂

Lots of people - ex-players, journos, ex-executives, etc... - have been anti certain clubs, or had a preconceived bias. Greg Denham and Dwayne Russell are the 2 that stand out. Mostly, I have learned to zone out when they talked.

But Mark McClure is a different. The fact that he played in 3 flags rubs me the wrong way because I never rated him. I thought he was a manure surrounded by vegies in the vegie patch called AFL (well actually VFL) when he played. But his whinging, whiney, thin voiced anti-Melbourne rhetoric was unrelenting. I hope the smug prat is choking now and can't wait to hear how he "always knew the Dees would come good, people were taking his words out of context" or some such carp.

I'm pretty sure the last time I saw Gary Buckenara he was starring in a C-grade TV commercial for The Drain Man

Open Mic 🎤 for all to fashion the appropriate metaphors to describe his 💩 story with that factoid... 🧻🪠🚿🚽🛁

Brian Taylor was pro Dogs all match in his commentary until our win was assured, then he started praising us!

Not sure Buckenara was much loved by teammates at Hawthorn.

I remember David Parkin snorting with contempt when his name came up in an interview some years ago.

Recruiting Guru? No. [censored]? Yes.

It staggers me that he is now and ever was the regular ‘comments’ expert on ABC radio calls. His prematch previews are embarrassing for their simplicity and lack of analysis, not to mention the nonsense he spouts in his quarter by quarter summaries. The sum of his critical thought is to only ever assess performance as a product of player/team motivation. If they’re going well, it’s because they want it more, and are ‘harder’. If they’re performing badly, it’s because they’re not united, disinterested and/or soft. He has no other takes. Basically, anyone could spout what he does, and with zero knowledge of the game………. Rant over, I feel better now. It’s been such a relief to read some real journalism post-GF this week - Greg Baum, Jake Niall, Scott Gullan, et al.

Agree with the description of McClure as a 'dinosaur'. I don't understand how he gets a gig. Total moron.

I absolutely despise Ross 'budding' Lyon. The word 'vile' springs to mind.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Triplechins? He tipped the Bulldogs to win the GF because a filth person couldn't tip Melbourne. Or something like that. Great logic TC. Call yourself a professional ???

Much argument amongst the judging panel her as to the rating - with anywhere between zero and three peanuts being pushed.

Debate centered on the definition of axe to ground and how harmless she is. Also how much to bring old Caro grievances into the mix and whether there has been a continuous, unbroken chain of wrongness since her attacks on the dees in her coverage of the tanking saga (and arguably even further back).

The fact I stopped watching Footy Classified 2 years ago  makes assessment harder. That said has been relatively benign in her 3aw slots as it it pertains to being wrong about the dees.

But Caro's old fashioned pre grand finals beat up by claiming on FC that the dees had instituted a curfew on its players earned her a nomination. Totally made up and an attempt at creating some unnecessary, albeit pretty harmless, fugazi.

The clincher was two fold.

One - despite the club never using the term curfew, in fact explicitly saying it wasn't a curfew, she backed up her beat up by claiming 'players' had said it was a curfew. Implied multiple players and that she had heard from them directly.

Two - she gave Ross 'I'm withdrawing my interest in the Carlton coaching job, despite there being no interest' Lyon the platform to claim the dees are treating their players like children, not adults.

On Ross 'the Boss, defence wins finals (editor note: but only of you can also score more than 30 points)' Lyon, he has been nominated for an award and i'm confident he will receive one.

Score

Fair comment. Absolutely a great player.

God-given gifts don't translate in any way to having a good insigth to a club looking in from the outside. Pure speculation by most and good media fodder.

His comments and Ross Lyon's 2021 finals forecast will be seen as comedy gold in the future.

As an aside I will be amazed for lots of reasons if Ross Lyon is again a senior coach after this year's sagas.

Agreed. But you missed out Kellie Underwood when referring to Eddie.

" I just feel the Doggies are ready to go"

Huge insight there. Leave the prognostication to the experts.

Caro really annoyed me on the Offsiders on ABC the other day when she couldn't resist saying the tanking issue was 'almost as bad as the Essendon drug scandal'.

OK, maybe they were both 'cheating' (though in one case in order to get immediate advantage over opponents, in the other to rebuild the list for the future).  But how can she equate the administration tanking with injecting a group of young blokes with god knows what.  How can she!

Daisy Pearce was embarassing BT and James Brayshaw, with insightful contradictions all game on stratgy. So much so, after half time BT would often ask Daisy what she thought was happening.

The best example was 3rd 1/4 when Lever kicked the ball long on Langdon's wing to a footrace beteween Kossie and Tmac, kicking to TMAC. He was much further forward than Kossies\. TMAC lost the contest and Dogs retained the ball.

Brayshaw said that was a win for the Dogs. 20 seconds later May marks the rebounding dogs kick due to the backline set up, pointed out then by Daisy how Lever's clever kick gave the Dees defence time to set back up.

THAT was embarrassing.

If Dr. D, was a Demon supporter (which I doubt ) he would come on here , show some character and admit he got things very wrong.

Sue she simply loves being negative on everything hence why I simply dont give her the time of day. As a great man once said I usually "Turn the other cheek".

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
