Rn I’m watching the second half of the prelim again coz… why not? I was just thinking about how the word ‘legend’ gets bandied around a lot. So much so that it’s kind of lost its potency. But… Maxy Gawn. I mean seriously, from the winner after the siren in Rd 23 through the prelim with his five goal haul and on to captain the Mighty Dees to an historic Premiership victory. This is the stuff of folklore.
MINSTRELS WILL WRITE SONGS ABOUT HIM!

🏆❤️💙😁❤️💙🏆

Ha ha! Why not? I'll have a go (after thinking that to play like he did all year is like winning a marathon, and about what a cunning bu&%#ger the big boy is)

How did he win the marathon

Maxy Maxy Maxy?

He floated to the back of the field

And jumped into a taxi.

Please, there’s no need to panic. This is not as bad as it looks. At least, that’s what the medicos will tell Tracc, similar to how they didn’t tell Maysie how bad his hammy tear was. So, rather than “decapitated” let’s say he’s “incapacitated.” Obviously his preseason will look a little different but from all accounts he should be cherry ripe by Rd 1 of season 2022.

I read yesterday Alan Richardson was driving around with the cup & if he saw a painted red & blue fence he'd pop in with the cup.

I hope at some point they have popped into Neale's house

Yeah i heard he'd been doing some dropins. He must live nearby as I often see him at one of my favourite cafes early in the morning. I'll have to hit him up to see if he still has it with him 😄

Its great reading the first couple of pages of this thread.

The third quarter still brings a tear to the eye.

Has anyone seen a different angle to Frittas first goal in the third?  Off the boot it looks like it is going through for a point.

One thing I've enjoyed noticing more of on re-watching the GF are the signs, photos, etc., in the crowd, thanking people for tickets or showing the name of the person/family they're representing. Love it!

I had the lovely guy I sold my tickets to send me pics from the game and even days after….

I went to a function the other night and was lucky to be sitting next to Jack Viney and I asked him who , apart from Melbourne, were the best teams and he said Footscray were and they were about on a par with Geelong. He said the two best teams played off in the GF.

He didn't rate Port and said they were there because of a soft draw and felt we had the Lions measure, I didn't ask them of the other teams but I got the impression that apart from ourselves, the Bullies and the Cats, the rest were just making up the numbers.

Has anyone gone back to re read the game day thread after the bont put them 19 points up? Would be interesting to read the comments and people potting melbourne and probably giving up at that stage.

Actually I just re read some, it's funny reading them now especially knowing the result. Even comments I wrote wow I did get frustrated with harmes.

Poeple potting Goody saying he has no backup plan, Viney getting slammed as well as fritta.

As sad as it was not being at the G...Im glad we didn't have to battle for the flag last year.

Sure it was weird seeing a granny in Perth but truth be told it was better than last years one in Brisbane.

it was sold out and certainly had a great atmosphere.

Also I dont feel anyone can take anything away from us with covid. There were no shortened quarters. No stop start. No 30 games in 30 days,.

Other than a few crowds missing and change of venues it was business a usual. Credit to  the Afl for all their work.

And a credit to all the western fans and those who travelled.

I refrained from the site but started sulking at the 19 point margin and was genuinely afraid.

If i had come here Im sure I wouldn't have said things Id regret. Nothing new.

After Gus goaled I was feeling ok.

Despite our history and it being only 4 goals I was dancing everywhere at 3/4 time knowing it was ours. There was just some magic about in that 60 seconds...... a sign if you like.

Makes up for that one that looked like a goal that Max kicked in the second QTR I think.

I was spewing at the time.

Tbh I hate that song and I hate celiine. But that person butchering the sing with the horrible recorder over the top makes it nearly better than the vision.

Having watched he replay a few times I have noticed just how good Viney was.

He had an enormous game tackling, getting the hard ball to advantage for his teammates and creating space for his teammates with one in particular I remember which gave Harmes the opportunity to get the ball and hit Fritch lace out which atarted our comeback.

Viney is Melbourne royalty and deserves all his success. I am really happy for him.

Heart and Soul of the Club.

Can't believe people were calling him out for a couple of years there.

So nice!

For sure, the circumstances and the efforts everyone (the club, fans east to west and everywhere else) put in to be connected gave the whole thing a very different flavour. I've said a few times that I've never given all that much thought before to Dees fans in WA and what it's like to follow from afar, but I'll always have a special respect for our WA fans now and will do what I can to make sure that connection stays strong, as it always should be.

Certainly if I'm ever lucky enough to attend a Grand Final, I'll be thinking about the people unable to attend due to distance/cost/not getting a ticket and how to ease that for others because I so appreciated what WA fans did to help us feel like we were there.

I've never been a fan of the Titanic music to footy clips either.
It was more the slow motion vision of the players reactions to taking top spot that did it.
Especially Oliver.
Guy is just driven to win.

Don’t particularly like the movie either.
But it was a titanic moment

In hindsight, Im not sure I could have handled a game that went to the wire.

Its strange that if someone told me that Tmac, Max , Jackson and Kozzie hadnt goaled by three qrt time, I would have assumed a big loss.

Gee Fritta must have been close to the medal. Almost bagged six. Still love his fourth goal for skill and momentum.

Watching the replay, the 19 point deficit wasnt really an accurate depiction of our efforts. So many points just missed  from set shots whereas dogs  quick snaps went straight through the middle.

Is it just me or did the dogs seem very flat coming out in the last. Its like they had already surrendered. Could that last minute of the third have taken away their hope? I know we were playing some inspired footy but it did seem they had dropped as well.

The look on Bonts face after Olivers goal says it all. He looks at the scoreboard replay, shakes his head, curses and almost cries. The other players in a state of shock. They gave up then. Not even a a semblance of a challenge in the last. Beveridge confirms this when he says in the blink of an eye the game was gone for them.

Surrendered? Nope.  They just couldnt get the ball, we were the best team this year, It took them 2.5 quarters to get 19 points up and the Dees 10 minutes to get 24 points up.  (Don't tell anyone but their mid field is too old).

More like too young Smith Dunkley  Bont McRae and Hunter are  still young ish others are 24 plus inc Libba and Treloar who with Bont and Smith  were their best.

CP5 and Clarry and Jack Viney who  had a great game in and under plus Sparrow who was almost error free and so clean plus Harmes in bursts and the wonderfully underrated ANB who played his finest game by far IMO and  has another 5 years of good/ great footy ahead of him at the Dees ALL proved too much with Dogga and Maxy extra mids.

The Dam Wall broke when our A graders flicked the switch to another level ( sorry about 3 levels up).

Best Dees footy I have ever seen in 63 years 100 to 7 points!! A 93 point turnaround in 1.5 quarters!!!

Championship Quarter plus the Domination Quarter to boot equals Premiership half 16.5 to 3.1 !!!

13 th Flag and we are back in the Top Vic Clubs if we play our cards right.

I had quite a few of those in my footy career Cassie.

People often described my movements on the field as "glacial".

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
