English played more than half the game against the dees in round 19 forward I reckon, so they had to cover him then too. I forget who rucked when he wasn't.

English and Gawn were both in 89/108 ruck contests. Schache was in 18.

Ta. There you go.

Confirmation bias at work.

That and English is a [censored] ruckman.

Personally I'm happy with the two week pre GF break as the flag and balloons I ordered a week ago for the front of the house still haven't been despatched.

Not possible with the Bulldogs in quarantine until Sunday

I know its for Covid reasons this year but from next year onwards i say ditch the pre GF bye week

It's GAME DAY!!

The mighty DEMONS are playing an in-house practice match to keep their form up. One fair dinkum match in 28 days or whatever.

It's the same here on Demonland. One game day thread since Aug 28.

I propose a mock GAME DAY thread to keep our posting form up in preparation for next weekend.

Some suggested matchups:

Smith is not a defender's wazoo vs. Spargo should be delisted
ANB is not up to AFL standard
vs. Hunt is fast but so what if his disposal is so poor

Some suggested drills:

McDonald is cooked
Oliver cannot kick straight
Umpires have it in for us
We're running around like under 9s

Suggested initial post:

Melbourne B can't win against Melbourne A. Two goals down already. I knew this would happen!

Same here.
All you can do for now is pop white balloons in your area!

Very good. It will be the first game day thread I'll ever read after the start of play.

I hear ya. My situation is that I ordered ribbon from the florist last week. I picked it up a couple of days ago but somewhere along the line the florist and I must’ve got our wires crossed. I thought it was $1 per metre so I said gimme $50 worth. Turns out it’s way less than I expected and now I’ve got 720 metres of ribbon! Gonna take me a while to go through all of that. The florist said why don’t you keep some of it for next year. I said I like your confidence. She says I’m a bulldogs supporter but I know Melbourne are just beginning a very successful era.
I’ll be going to her shop forever.

That's hilarious WCW. For some reason there is a general shortage of red balloons. I thought I had it sorted with a delivery from K-Mart as their site said they were available, only to find out they had none and had to source them so now my delivery will be split into two. I then organised a delivery with Spotlight which hasn't left the building yet and I've heard nothing from Lombard about the flag I ordered. I'd collect them all myself if they were within 5km.

The doggies will bring an extra 1 or 2 up to the stoppage and do everything to get it to the outside of these stoppages .

Do we allow this ?  It’s important not to give them a start - thats my negative / concern for the 1st quarter. momentum is big in grand finals.

I really think we can get hold of them  - play to a level that eliminates any tactics or themes that they bring in .

If I’m the doggies Im playing someone on Salem - Langdon  English to Gawn for the whole game regardless of position and getting physical with Fritsch and  Bowie.

If Im melbourne Im using Viney Trac and Oliver in the middle for most of the game - 50/50 starting positions at every stoppage and no loose players at stoppage . Pay attention to Smith with Angus and Bowie on The midget Caleb D .

Petty to Naughton where we can - try and get Fristch onto Keith and make him run .

We also need a strategy  for the all out kamikaze attack that will inevitably arrive when the games on the line - perhaps bring more numbers up and force it to the outside / boundary until we can get possession and control it by foot with tempo  to protect our lead and then go quick after half way if its on .  No doubt something we do anyways but discuss it as a group so when it happens we are ready.

Whatever it takes Go Dees .

I have a nice lobster in the frig and French champagne on ice  for after the big win tonight. I will be nervous all day today.

Today’s HS defs worth the $3 cost. It’s very Dees-centric. Front and back page, Dees. 4-page lift-out titled “The Irish Demon” all about Stynesie with beautiful pictures (yep, I’m crying. Again) and a page that you can glue onto cardboard, cut on the dotted line and you’ve got your own Maxy mask!

Is anyone else sick to death of the media’s narrative that we’re underdone because the Dogs have played 3 games in 4 weeks?

It depends on how you count.

If you count from the day after the qualifying final, we'll have played 1 game in 27 days.

If you count from the day of the round 23 match against Geelong, we'll have played 3 matches in 35 days.

Two more games in 8 more days.

It suits whatever narrative you want to put forward.

At last someone has spelt it out fro what it is. A media discussion angle to fill space.

Doggies are 1 game in 21 days by the same standrads touted.

We have the leading fittness and conditoning team. That will address any issues we have re fitness or hardness.

So, bad news. Kevin Bartlett on the Marngrook radio show has picked the Dogs to win. On the other hand, he also said the "one game in a month" thing is a furphy because in olden days (when he was winning flags) that was routine for the top club. Didn't stop them in the least.

Also, Andrew "Sky" Walker, ex-Carlton, picked the Dogs. But what would he know.

I suppose they have to try and counter Gawn, I hope we are ready make sure Max is not limited by their tactics

Glad they're telegraphing their intensions

A team that’s so focused on countering their opponent is a team that isn’t confident their structures and game plan is good enough to win.
Just saying.

Been reading The Red Fox all morning. Quite like this from J.O Smith.

"For years they turned the other cheek,
In their "gentle Annie days;
'Til Checker taught them vigour,
And as it's fair - it pays."

I reckon Goodwin will quietly be loving all the "what tactical masterstroke is Beveridge about to pull" talk.

No one's talking about what we're going to do.

I like it that way.

I got my Lombards delivery x 2 in a couple of days both times.

Thanks for the heads up longsuffering. I better get on the dog & bone to them first thing Monday then.

For those who've attended a GF before - how long after the siren would you arrange your pickup/transport home? One of our party will be in wheelchair so we'll be using a charter vehicle (can't take the train) and trying to work out how much time to allow after the siren for the formalities and whatever it is they do afterwards.

Thanks!

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
