2018 has also been brought up on here as have curses and other such.

In the end the only relevance it had was to reinforce to Goody the need to fix our key defence posts.

This team will be judged on it's own performance, so far it looks pretty good to me.

It's the first time since '64 that we've had a realistic chance of winning a flag.

It doesn't mean we will win it, but we're well in this race.

2018 will have nothing to do with anything now...

The irony is we have played in 2 preliminary finals in the last 10 years and both will be decided at the Optus Oval Perth.

I believe we are a better chance this time than 2018 because we were top 4 this time and won our way to the final quite well and we have no injuries that we know of and a week to over come some niggles.

A better defence and a midfield with an additional player in Langdon, the key players have more experience this time along with some fantastic 1st and 2nd year players.

It's not a one man team we have good players and systems around him but it helps.

All year comparisons have been made about the demons, comparisons that have got nothing to do with this season, many have been waiting and predicting a major collapse, it has not come to pass. Even now stupid comparisons are still being  made, stop them now  you fools, it is making you look stupid.

There are things that I’m sure certain players who were involved in that debacle of a day back in 2018 that will be helpful this week but there are so many differences in the situation compared to what we’re in now. May and Lever are the two that stand out to me, we have Frost and OMac as our two pillars back then and while we didn’t lose it in defence (we lost it everywhere that fateful day) there can be no doubt on how much of an upgrade this is to our current situation. 

As an aside my brother had been telling me for a while to start listening to the DeeBrief and I got into it late last season and leading into this season. It’s been good to listen to that pod because while there are times I don’t agree with what’s being said it actually just reminds me of hanging out with fellow Dees fans after a game and shooting our mouths off a little. It’s been a small thing that brings a smile to my face, well done to all involved. 

Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of the same repetitive media questions about the 2018 preliminary final? That said if we don't get the right result on Friday I'll be counting the minutes before the first post saying it was because we didn't review that same game. 

Of course the 2018 prelim is relevant, in any number of ways - it would be silly to argue that it's not. Our core midfield leaders have all played in a previous prelim for starters. It seemed like last time that they had no idea what was coming. This is especially important coming up against a seasoned finals outfit in Geelong. Our approach and personnel has also likely evolved due to that day (despite many still believing that Goodwin never reviewed the tapes lol). We also have a prelim at Optus under our belt to draw from for strategy. Plus, the local Eagles fans will probably be more likely to sit in our corner.

The build up to this prelim has felt completely different to 2018 I’m terms of how we got there and the expectation to now win.

The team is 50% different to the one from 2018. The game style of the team is completely different. The culture of the club is completely different. That 2018 match is not relevant to this team.

Not relevant to the entire team. Just half of it's members, and their influence on the other half. 

Time to erase another one of those embarrassing records from our past, I say.

Take the experience from it and that's about it.

Agree. If someone brought up the match preview thread for the 2018 PF you’d seldom find many posters who were confident of a win. 2018 was all about creating a stepping stone for the future. 2021 is all about winning it.

While we won some good games in 2018, we also lost a fair bit. We were shakier. Sure, we lost a few this year we shouldn't have but we always refocused and sturdied ourselves. A lot of that comes down to a MUCH better list, but also better coaches and help for Goody, and the big one - belief. There has been a shift in culture that has been decades overdue. 

2018 means nothing. Win or lose (I think we will win, but if we beat the cats 3 times in a year I know not allowed to ask Santa for anything this year, other than maybe the GF?) we will continue to write this new chapter of this amazing club.

I'm taking it now that when posters deflect on the relevance of 2018, they're referring to the relevance of losing or even choking that prelim and how it relates to this one and our current team. I'm not around Melbourne media, so have no idea of the current narrative. I'm talking about about the invaluable experience gained from that loss and participating in general. That's an undeniable positive. 

Edit: I'm not remotely concerned about any scars from that match, just positive about the 'learnings'.

Totally agree, even if we did beat West Coast in the prelim, Collingwood would have destroyed us in the Grand Final and that’s not something I want to experience.
