Ironically, I reckon I've got 'more hope' because I've 'given up hope'... I don't think he'll ever be the gun player we hoped for or that some in the media thought he might become, but if he can become a solid, best 22, second key forward then I think that's ok.

...or even a backup forward to cover injury to key players. All clubs need players to fill these rolls e.g. Mitch Brown.

How old do you think I am? ?

I guess at 39 I am now well and truly in the old fogey category (especially when I start lamenting the state of modern music) but I wasn't that old when social media was introduced. Thankfully though I can remember a time before, I feel sorry for my kids though who will never have that luxury.

Haha it wasn’t directed at you mate. I’m in the same boat roughly, 34 years old and didn’t have any social media till around age 18

It completely depends on how many followers they have. I know our guys share content for Telstra. Generally they are paid in proportion to their follower count per post. It’s an entire industry these day.

A google search on this will tell you all you need to know

Not sure how our guys rate but last week with the Coca Cola incident they revealed that Ronaldo makes more off social media than he does from playing football.

In the influencer world you need around 100k followers before you're at first base. Even then you are not a great earner. Of course this can change if you have a specialist following (highest paid youtube ads for example are for financial products).

Then there's personal merchandising and cash donations such as Patreon.

It's certainly a space to watch. If you were a star player for say the Crows or the Eagles it could be a goer. In Melbourne I would think it much tougher.

Perhaps 4 or 5 star players from different clubs doing a Front Bar type show on youtube might sell.

It got sidetracked when someone mentioned that Weid was  gutted/disappointed with his very poor game and underwhelming return to the seniors. And now it must be a mental health issue. Well he should be very disappointed. A normal reaction for any footballer and especially for one of his ambitions. And something would be NQR if he wasn’t. If mental health issues are involved then he needs support, should not be playing and irresponsible for the club to persist in playing him. He has played 5 consecutive games and only the first could be considered satisfactory. I don’t recall Tmac getting the same kind of sympathy on here when he was having very poor form. I notice many of the Weid sympathisers here were very critical of Tmac at the time.

For those that doubt how the club sees Weideman:

"Foxfooty.com.au understands the Suns have prioritised a key forward to partner Ben King in this year’s trade period and would be willing to offload their prized draft asset...currently Pick 3...

Melbourne has the highest rated out of contract key position player on its books in Sam Weideman, while other lesser valued forwards such as Taylor Walker and Mason Cox are also without deals for 2022.

Pick 3 would be too heftier price for the latter two, but the Demons rate Weideman supremely and would surely not lose him for any less".

2021-gold-coast-suns-trade-players-out-of-contract

I can hear people say take pick 3 and run!  However, we would need to find a young replacement for him.  Doubt there are many mid 20 yo options out there.  And, at what cost?

While some on here devalue Morris he still has good contacts at the club so I give credence to his claim that we value him 'supremely'.

And regarding Sam's mind space.  He went thru a torrid time when his contract was last up for renewal in 2019, saying he was so down he didn't want to go out of the house due to the social and mainstream media pile on.  iirc correctly he went off social media at the time.  Thankfully mainstream media isn't getting stuck into him this year so hopefully Sam can take comfort from that and I'm sure the club would be working really hard to keep his confidence up.

No one has questioned the clubs doubt in Sam.

People question whether Sam has what it takes to take the next next. From a football term, I think he's mentally fragile who's struggling hard with expectations. Does he have the mentality strength in overcoming these challenges? I have serious doubts.

Right now only time will tell.

Do you mean that, because the posters in this thread are not fired up enough about Weid's down form, that the team is going to start sliding and that would tolerable?

What?

Difficult question to answer, fully, Smokey. Perhaps in some aspects of the MFC and onfield outcomes, a balance scale may tip slightly that way; perhaps, we are still in a position of improvement and one hopes like hell it is continuous - so the balance scale reading improves our spirits far above where it peaked in all of those years of minimal success. As for the Weid, we can be a little apologetic about his performances as if we accept that he is still the best option we have at the moment. If that is the case, this is not going to be a Premiership season for the Dees. We are prepared to wait for a Premiership whilst we wait for Sam to improve.

AFL site:

"NORTH Melbourne is tracking the prospects of the key forward who has lost his spot to former Roos forward Ben Brown at Melbourne.

Sam Weideman sits on the Roos' radar as a potential target at season's end as they weigh up the need for extra support for Nick Larkey in attack.

The Roos have been scouting the out-of-contract Demon throughout a season that has consisted of five AFL games but none since round 13.

It is understood Gold Coast has also shown a level of interest in Weideman".

I think Sam will benefit greatly from a change.  He wouldn't be the first player who can't get a game at his club and fulfils his potential at another.  Would prefer it be with us but he needs regular games to be consistent and build confidence.  For various reasons: injury, form, competition for spots, he has rarely played more than a handful of games in a row.

Hope he goes to the GC with another player in exchange for their 1st pick! That would be a bold move.

GCS first pick will be around 5/6 which they have said they are prepared to trade for the right player.

North will probably have pick 1 but I doubt they will trade that as they are committed to re-build thru the draft.  But they might trade next year's first round pick.

maybe second at a push

Late second round at best I'm afraid (pick 31 plus)

Hopefully we can sign Jackson before Weid leaves.

Would be a typical MFC thing to lose Weid, Jackson and T Mac (no form) all by the end of 2022

I didn't say anyone would.  I was clarifying the picks GCS and North have this year.

While a club may not trade a high first round pick on its own, they might trade it with a second round back.  Lots of possibilities.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
