Am I being overly paranoid about the bad effects lots of attention can do to a team? Is recognition better than being ignored for player/team confidence?

In the 1970s we rarely received much media coverage. I used to dread the rare instances when a story was published which profiled one of our players because that player invariably played a stinker* in our next game. I suspect other supporters who have been following the Demons throughout those lean years will agree.

*'played a stinker' was probably the actual words a young me used in the 1970s.

From 'stop-gap', to Premiership player, to star player in a few months.  Unprecedented!

Bloody Hell, he's still just a kid!

I don't think he was ever stop gap.

He was the best kick in his draft according to Jason Taylor. Bailey Laurie was 2nd best

Thats the reason they were selected

Random rising star fact.

Since the award was introduced in 1993, there have been a total of 21 players who have been nominated twice. Melbourne has had five of those players of their list

Nathan Jones, Jordan Gysberts, Sam Blease, Luke Jackson and now Jake Bowey.

How many Racing Star Nominations can any player receive. I know Bowies first was last year but can a player receive multiple  nominations in the one year.

No you cannot get multiple nominations in one year but since Bowey is Under 21 and played less than 10 games at the start of the Season he was able to get a second nomination but it does not mean he will be the rising star this year unless he has an exceptional 6-10 games this year.

I expect he will eventually be move forward to the wing or half-forward because he could do more damage to the opposition in these roles provided we get players to replace him on the half-back.

I think I read somewhere that IF we win this week, Bowey will have the best winning streak from debut ever recorded in the AFL at 10.

Wonder who he knocks off!

He doesn't. At least, not yet. Look here. The record is 18 held by Albert Lauder from Collingwood about 100 years ago.

If Bowey were to retire today, though, he would hold (equally) the record of most games played without recording a loss.

Compare with Adam Tomlinson who player 21 games before he was on the winning side.

This is what I meant. It was hard to word.

James Jordon also played 9 first games before a loss last season.

Gees, way to put the Mozz on us!   😁

I wonder how many players have been nominated for the rising star after winning a premiership?

Richmond might have one or two? You would think it would be a pretty small group though!

That’s a table set to keep an eye on as the year progresses. Spargo has one of the best win loss records in the comp right now (min 50 games). And didn’t realise Hunt has played 96 but none in a final.

There is one other - a Brisbane guy who’s name escapes me.

How can you get a rising star nom when you’ve played 300 games?

Played a great game Saturday. So much poise for a nine gamer.

Wish he'd shave off that ginger mo' though!

Can't wipe the smile off my face after that 360 interview. He's so composed even on camera. I'm loathed to say this, because he's as tough as competitor as any other 2nd year player, but he is a such a 'cute little tacker' of a footballer. Apologies 🤦‍♂️

Richard Hadley (Saw it on reddit this week)

Remember when Geelong thought they where smart and traded a future first round pick to jump ahead of Melbourne to take Holmes before Melbourne leaving Melbourne to take Bowey with the next pick.

Two rising star nominations and a premiership medallion in 9 games.

With an award every three games, it's quite possible he'll win the brownlow three times this year, the coleman medal, the norm smith and the rising star.

… and the Nobel Peace Prize. Don’t forget the Nobel Peace Prize!

So far Bowey has been the best performed player in his draft year, well surpassing the hyped up no 1 pick Ugle-Hagen.

EFC have Perkins running around against us this Friday and I really rate him, think he will be a player.

Even Daniel Menzel won his first 15.

Allen Jakovich went alright. Didn't get the plaudits that JB has but all the same kicked a few goals...(50 in his first 9 games...)

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
