Just read that Hawthorn are so desperate for money they'd be happy to play Tasmania home and away each year down there with their 'home' game being at UTAS. 

It's going to be interesting to see how both them and North are going to try and plug a $4 million gap in their annual finances moving forward. You could just about guarantee if we gave up our Alice Springs game that one of them would jump in to replace us with the Hawks no doubt signing a sponsorship deal with Lasseters casino. I'm guessing they will both be whoring themselves out to regional towns and cities around the country now that they're current gravy train is running out of track.

Regional NSW/Queensland is my guess

Regional Victoria has gorged itself on the Empire Games. Not really a strong regional WA and SA will be gathering

Lets be fair dinkum they haven't announced this for fun and if they can keep GC and GWS going with unlimited cash and varying results Tassie with its AFL culture will be a breeze. And the cherry on the top of the cake is the roof to keep the cold winds out off from the Derwent. 

I would willingly take a $100 bet with you on this OD but 4/5 years is a long time to wait for us oldies to collect!!!

Warner Bros can get stuffed. It's not right a corporation on the other side of the world get to copyright the name of a very unique and distinctive native Tasmanian animal.

This gets spoken about a lot.  The vast majority of people I have spoken to will stick with their original team, but buy memberships and support the Tas team against any opposition apart from their team.  I am in this boat as well, after so many years supporting the Demons it would be impossible to just drop that and change teams, even though I could see the home ground from my house.  I suspect the amount of members will come as a surprise, people will jump on board regardless if Tassie are their no. 1 team or not.

I have been loving @Ouch!'s content in this thread, his sentiments are very similar to mine and most of the people I know.

Couple of points regarding the go home factor and the weather.  Hobart isn't the backwater it once was and is still perceived to be by many.  The go home factor will be there but no more than anywhere else, there is plenty on offer for people of any age, and Melbourne is an hour away if you want to go and visit family.  Not every AFL draftee is from the big cities, and to brush off Hobart as a terrible destination for a young bloke is outdated and misguidedly superior.  Yes, it won't be for everyone, but neither is Melbourne, or Sydney.  I think the lifestyle in Hobart will suit plenty enough people to make the go home factor a non-issue.

Hobart weather is that similar to Melbourne it's not funny, just slightly cooler.  We get a few extreme cold nights/mornings but it's not like it's a different planet.  if it was that much of a concern then players would be leaving the Melbourne clubs in droves to go to GC, GWS etc etc.

Grassroots footy in Tas has been dying for a long time, I hope this announcement can turn things around before we are no longer an AFL state but a soccer/basketball state instead.

I've never been to mainland Tassie only King Island so I've actually got no reference point or understanding of what Hobart is like as a city and I'm sure it has advanced a lot over the years. Is the weather as erratic as Melbourne's though? That is the question! 😊

Four seasons in one day.  I've spent enough time in Melbourne to know it is very similar, just colder, but not outrageously so (very often).

Although anyone who went to the North Melbourne vs Richmond Friday night game at Blundstone a few years back will know how cold it can get.  Coldest I've ever been in my life.  But as dear old mum says, there's no such thing as being too cold, you're just inappropriately dressed.

I'd love to get down there for a week and see all the sights. There's no good reason why I haven't been, just hasn't happened yet.

I chatted to a work mate who is involved with the Nth Hobart footy club juniors, since the announcement was made, they are already fielding enquiries from people wanting to participate in Auskick, u8s and up. Some junior clubs, even thought they are 4-5 weeks into the season are discussing how best to manage the increased interest because they might have enough players to start fielding additional teams into competitions.

Haha, that was a crazy night, so the fact that I can remember it suggests that it wasn't 'typical' footy night. It does get cold,... that said I don't think we have anything on Canberra... ;) and I don't think we've had snow in a game before.

 do also recall a game between Nth and I think WCE at Blundstone where it was the first time I've see a player try to kick it for (admittedly it went very high) and the ball landed behind him due to the wind pushing it behind him....

I kinda agree that the Devils appears to be the best fit at this stage, appreciate that the AFL is going to open it up for public opinion, similar to what happened for the Tassie Jackjumpers.

I will say, I don't want to have a green vest with a yellow map of Tassie and a red/burgundy "T" on it.  In terms of colors it probably makes sense to lean into the colour Green from a class perspective, however. 

I kinda think the Warner bros angle should be approached in a different way, rather than fight them on commercial rights, push to secure a sponsorship/partnership deal with Warner Bros. Their claim is a legacy claim that was a character created back in the 1950s.... he's not exactly relevant in todays' market, perhaps it could be a positive for both parties, at least for mascot.

Given that the animal existed ling before Warner Bros....  given the Words are Public Domain, then any gambit that W.B. would wish to undertake ought be thrown out by any Tasmanian Court.

They're a bullying type corporation that only understands 2 things.... the nature of bullying...so counter that with dismissal.

The other , probably more mutually beneficial ideal is of course $$$.

If Marvel can sponsor a Park...Why not W.B a team.

Yeah I hope they don't go with that jumper or at least modernise it.  I don't mind the colours either and no-one wears green

So, some further news, is that apparently AFL Tasmania is set to announce that they are not going to continue the TSL (State league for Tasmania) beyond 2024.
Not sure what to think about this... on one hand it shows how bad things have gotten in Tasmania's local football scene, and I wonder if this is an attempt to reset things for a while, build up local club representation for the Nth, NW and South. On the other hand, this is NOT likely to be well received for clubs in the Nth. Nth Launceston is one of the strongest clubs in the state, and would rightly have concerns that a move back to regional competitions would see players either move to the mainland or Hobart, which will be base of operations for the VFL, and any CoE.
Our state league has not a club from the NW for quite a while, and I think there are only two teams in the Nth of the state...The teams in the south have also been struggling where clubs like Glenorchy has struggled for a couple of years with playing numbers, and I don't think has the numbers for a reserves team in the current season... 
There is no doubt, that getting players back is crucial for the success of the AFL team, and needs to be the number 1 priority that starts now..
