Looking at it over and over, it will all depend on where the actual force was. The only way Viney doesn't get suspended is if his arm was actually forming a 'bridge' between the jaw and shoulder of the Gold Coast player.

Having done police transcription work in the past I've got no time for any kind of choking or throat crushing. It's pretty much the number 1 way people get hospitalised or killed by domestic violence and that's even after months or years of other forms of bashings. It is incredibly high risk and a bit like concussion in that it can seem innocuous at first then really hit hard that night or even the next day.

I'd rated it on the level of eye gouging, but that isn't helpful given the Chris Judd precedent.

I agree with you, i think even just the look of the incident itself is enough that they'll have to suspend him. i'm not expecting anything too crazy but i think best case he might be back for the Cats game

Sometime blokes deserve a whack back. For example, I remember Jordie Lewis dotting Patty Cripps in a game against Carlton. I actually took Jordie's side in that he revealed later on that there was dirty stuff going on under the packs. I'll accept his word on that front as Carlton still had it in their heads that we were still the 'bruise free football' team of callow youth from the Bailey era.

However, an established player attacking a kid while beating them by 16 goals is pretty ordinary. 

Playing on the edge is one thing, but getting young blokes in vulnerable positions and looking to hurt them is another. What was to be achieved and what did Jack want to do? Dack him, humiliate him and then KO him? As the crying kid said, when Homer was beating up the Krustyburgler....

The difference, as I see it Colin, is that Wallis's dirty punch* caused a serious injury (fractured larynx) which forced Green out of the rest of the game and that it was intended to cause damage.

In Viney's case, his opponent jumped straight up and continued on with the game and I reckon the intent was a show of macho bravado, not to injure his opponent.

We'll find out tonight how the Tribunal assess it and I'd be disappointed, but not surprised, if Viney is suspended given how much of a Chooklotto their verdicts are these days.

*  While Green had his arms pinned behind his back by, I think, Damien Hardwick.

Perhaps you might want to address the point of my argument that it was pointless and that he was in a vulnerable situation rather than engage in hyperbole and distortions to bolster your own side? The similarities are that Viney is an experienced player attacking a second year player in an untoward manner. The extent of damage between the two differs, but in the first (which was unforgivable), the game was still hot. What was to be achieved by this?

For the record, I'd say it's a fine at best, and two weeks at absolute worst. I think it will probably land in the middle somewhere.

Collins initiated it. Viney was about to be off to the next play when Collins dragged him down by the jumper with two hands.

It's a wrestle. The sad thing is, the outrage machine has well and truly kicked in now and he'll likely get a worse punishment than he deserves. The references to George Floyd by some today are appallingly bad, a ridiculous stretch and frankly pretty insulting to that situation and it's context.

That being said, it doesn't change my opinion. 

I am not one to upbraid Melbourne players for being overly physical. We bloody needed it in years past.

I look at in terms of what Jack has done in a physical sense versus this. Let's look at some notable hits or acts of physical contact that Jack has been involved in.

1) The hit in his second year on Josh Jenkins. Broke the fella's jaw, but quite clearly, there wasn't enough time to change direction. Innocent on all charges.

2) When he cleaned up Shannon Hurn in 2017 in the game where Plugger McDonald kicked the sealer (also was the last game at Subiaco). Nary a problem as Hurn had laid a heavy hit on him in that game and the ball was well in the field of play on both occasions. Let him go.

3) When he scared seven shades of s*** out of Alex Rance in 2015 after the latter decided to punch a prone Jack Watts in the back of the head after he marked the ball. Jack rightly remonstrated and got Rance pinned on the ground. Again, no harm no foul (Rance deserved the treatment he got).

The third one is the key. When you have someone in a defenseless position, i.e. Wallis on Green, you leave them alone. Especially when the entire thing was over bar the shouting.
