Who the hell is our goal kicking coach!?

We're suddenly in a dark spot, folks. The Tigers are in the toilet and the Cats are having their evil way with them with the result that we'll be third on the ladder tonight.

Given the 'Dogs' cruisy drawer, and the fact we go to Perth and Geelong, we are likely to remain third at best.

How different it would have been had Tex not kicked that last goal (or the dropping the ball free just before hand was paid to us), and if Breust had missed last week. We'd be a game and a half clear.

Or you might say how different etc...if we could kick straight.

So what ur saying is we are seriously pferfurked

Remediation class again.

Petracca 10 metres out … was crucial in the 4th as his miss then 4 Eagles goals

Jackson  25 metres out

Gawn 30 metres out

Jordon 30 metres out

Sparrow  30 metres out

all missed gettable shots.

We can’t afford to miss goals that are 80% chances.

Melksham can be the new Goalkicking coach

We've got a board member who was a pretty sweet kick for goal.... Maybe he can wander down to 'observe training' fairly often...

You missed Fritter (twice).

Last time we scored more goals than points in a game ???

Way back on 4th June.
Round 12 v Lions 14.13

Yep, that’s simply not good enough. What’s interesting is that the last two matches we’ve been in the green going into the final quarter but finished poorly. Gawn in the third, Trac at the start of the restart of the 4th, and Jackson soon after. Those are all pretty standard chances missed.

There's always BT ,he says he's an expert

Who the hell is our goal kicking coach!?

It would appear to be .... nobody??

The 1 goal 6 in the last quarter against GCS was inexcusable.

No pressure and perfect conditions indoors with no crowds.

IIRC 3 shots hit the post. That is almost worse than missing in that it showed no allowance for a margin of error.

…… but missing by more does?? 🤔🤔🤔

I posted this in PF's other accuracy thread.  I'm not sure if this is all shots at goal or just set shots.  Probably all.  50/50 ends with Langdon.  Not really enough shots from Sparrow and def not enough from Mitch to really gauge how they fair at this stage....

MFC Goal Accuracy % Rankings - Season 2021 up to and including Round 18

Player SG GAC % 2021 Rank
B Fritsch 56 62.5 1

M Brown 4 50.0 5
E Langdon 22 50.0 5

SG = Shots at Goal   GAC = Goal Accuracy %

I know it’s very little to work off, but I was impressed with Sparrow’s set-shot technique and composure in a few games this year.

Might have been on the Gus and Gawny podcast this week, I cant remember exactly where I heard it but apparently players at training take shots at goal almost every session and before they can go home they need to get 6/7 in a row.

They were saying it took Lever 15 goes before he got it so he def wasn't going to have a shot at goal last Saturday night

Just looking at some season stats for the year;

We finished 6th for Goals Scored but won the minor premiership for Points scored narrowly pipping the Bulldogs by 2 points

So once again have we worked out who is the goal kicking coach. ?

BBB and Fritta missed a set shot but when you see Angus and ANB kicking them something must have been done.

I don’t think I’ve seen a Melbourne team turn their kicking misfortunes around so drastically. After Fritta bagged those two quick ones we didn’t look like missing, Gus’s set shot was massive.

So much of it can come down to confidence, one person kicks a pressure goal then the next person doesn’t feel as much of the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Wasn't Williams obsessive about kicking?

Kicking coach?

Choco is huge on kicking, but Stafford I believe oversees the forwards goal kicking.

Fritsch was always going to get it together eventually. Just needed some time for his routine to stand up at AFL pressure.

Ben Brown once he got his legs under him started looking like Ben Brown on set shots.

Tom McDonald’s goal kicking won’t ever reach the heights of 2018 but he still does a lot right.

ANB isnt amazing but is solid from good spots. Spargo’s solid inside 40 although has an unfortunate habit marking 40m out. Pickett came on from last year. Jackson has a good technique and rhythm.

Our biggest issue remained getting marks in good locations. Brown and Fritsch started to function and demand the ball in the right locations. Gawn was popping in to spaces and the kicker found him, rather than just going deep for the pocket roost - the Lever kick v Geel remains a thing of beauty.

Petracca, Oliver and ANB are the 3 who took big steps in hitting targets inside 50. I’m still not 100% he always knew what he was doing but Sparrow’s ability to not panic and find a target was crucial too.

Our midfield rotation has one above average kick in Tracc and that’s based on being an amazing penetrative kick without a touch and no left foot. The rest are below average but improved this year. If Choco can get them all average or above the forwards will get a lot more opportunities.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
