Never in doubt. He’s a gun. Still reckon he might be even better, or at least eventually more valuable as a forward, a la David Neitz. He’s got serious competitive edge and a great pair of hands, so who knows? I always thought when Tmac was down back that he was an obvious forward, and look how that turned out*.

*(Also said the same of Harry Taylor, but I won’t mention that)

He's always going to be a chance to give away a soft 50 but when he's fired up he looks a better player.

No surprise he got to play on young talls in Marshall and Georgiades with good midfield support and that saw him back himself to be far more assertive.

Hopefully he can keep it going against more seasoned opponents.

If it comes down to being in a position where one of he and weidemann want to leave for more opportunity, particularly when Tomlinson comes back, I’d keep Petty. Even if he plays forward post BBB or Tmac

It's an interesting comparison here between Weideman and Petty that I haven't thought about until this comment. I think he has come along in leaps and bounds since his first game this year. You can tell his confidence has improved and with it his actual games. I think a large part of that is due to the fact there is close to 0 pressure on his position after the Tomlinson injury.

In watching Weideman's games this year. He looked like a player who was scared to lose his spot in the team and player that was down on confidence. Early on he had so many nearly moments, where he was close to taking good contested marks. After a few poor performances it felt like his mindset went to I'm going to be dropped. I can understand what Goody was trying to do in giving him a block of games despite performance but I don't think that worked when he knew his position was on the chopping block and the external criticism.

Although BB was good last night, I think that he too seems not 100% confident with his place. Conversely, TMac mindset and form seems to have improved dramatically since the last couple of years where he is not worried about being dropped either after he was guaranteed a run of 6-7 games.

I guess this is what happens when you are fringe player on an AFL list. It be interesting to see how we manage this, as I think Weideman is so close to being a good player. I wonder how BB and Weideman's form would have been if they didn't go down with injury.

Will be interesting to see what happens next year when Thomlinson comes back.  Petty is too good to play VFL.  He may end up passing Brown and Weid as the other forward to TMac.

At the same time, when he was drafted, he was excelling as an intercept defender (i.e. the Lever role) so definitively has some flexibility to his game.

If I recall he played a couple of games forward - perhaps end of 2019 ?? I thought there were a few games he kicked a couple, and looked strong overhead...

Irrespective of whether he remains in the back, or heads forward as a target... he'll play 150-200 if he doesn't get injured.

Just for perspective on how young Petty still is - just two fewer games prior to this year and he would still be eligible for the Rising Star award.

Amazing that his form has meant we replaced tomlinson easily. i thought at the time it was a massive blow. when tommo comes back we’re going to have serious depth.

Wonder how we line up next year then

Truly nice dilemma to have. Harry has played as a forward (?2019?) to some effect, so could be anything.

I heard Jason Taylor asked why we took Petty in the draft when we already had a depth of tall midfielders on the list. He said when there is a jet available at a pick you didn't expect you have to take them.

Mate he's a tall defender not midfielder..

I most certainly hope that Goodwin does not forget just how (good) Potent Petty can be up forward, as well. An ideal forward in reality with just a little more weight and muscle to gain before next season. We have a great footballer in the making, here.

Harrison Petty of the Melbourne Demons Career AFL Stats (footywire.com)

He kicked 6 goals 5 behinds in 10 games in 2019 when he was 19, so he has some form up forward.

He's going to be a very good player.

Needs more games. Love his ability to peel off but he doesn’t quite have it in one on ones yet. Tomlinson did seem to lockdown a bit better but I’m backing this guy in he’s doing alright.

The boy is a star full stop.

No longer unnoticed and very important to us when May and Lever have an off day. Some massive one on ones he won in the last. I bet a lot of supporters’ hearts skipped a beat when he went off clutching a low hammy.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
