In the pocket is part of the team plan. The idea is that if the mark isn't taken, there will be a stoppage. And presumably a repeat entry if the ball is kicked out by a defender.

I get the frustration Dr. It defies logic that the losses we have had this year have been to lower teams. But you cannot win them all and i'd rather be losing the odd game now rather than in finals. 

There is no denying we were awful, but the Pies (and the Crows) played a style we have now seen is not sustainable. High Risk kicking, play-on percentage > 40% etc. These are not sustainable game traits but its how you beat us and probably the other 17 teams in the comp when it works. Had we been on and applied our usual pressure, we would have toasted them on turnover. We flattered their disposal efficiency due to the lack of pressure. Problem is today we never really got going. Why? Could be many things - sometimes you just had to try and win in 3rd gear as its not possible to play like we have in the past 2 weeks for an entire year. Its a marathon not a sprint - as the saying goes.

A lot will be made of this - im not worried yet - as its an anomaly not a pattern (yet).

How you and many others critique the players is fine. It’s the personal attacks that I can’t tolerate. Some people here don’t hold back and are unnecessarily nasty. The players aren’t happy to lose. Ppl should stop bagging them so much. There’s no shortage of opposition supporters to do that.

Don't think the players thought it was going to be easy, they lost because they couldn't apply the amount of pressure that they had in previous games. They were flat from the start, we will find out next game if there is a problem.

Tom McDonald was no better than Weid. What's his excuse? Neither was Fritsch.

Our forward line function was off and that means it was a team issue as much as it was any individual. 

The thing that continues to worry me is we don't have a single quality kick in our midfield. 

Petracca can hit the occasional lace out 60m beauty but his short and medium kicking is far too hit and miss. The rest - Oliver, Sparrow, Jordon, Harmes, Langdon, Brayshaw are long odds to ever pick out a 30m target and weight it to them.

On a wide dump of a ground like the SCG you have to hit up forwards around the top of the 50 and on short repeat leads. 

Same thing goes for the backline. Collingwood just went chip chip chip down the ground because they finally had a ground wide enough to suit their style of play. We couldn't hold them up or force switches. 

Meanwhile even though our defenders are allegedly good kicks they gave up chances to take on short kicks time and time again. They just burnt one and another and it's totally brainless. Maybe they know one of those short kicks will end up with the midfield butcher brigade and that will end the chance of the attack?
 

I love how good we are at the long down the line player and then running it out of their. That's a great weapon to have. But we can't make that the only plan. The size of the SCG meant once we burst from those packs we generally ran straight in to the next Collingwood defender pushing up or they still had numbers back.

It's the old win win situation, or at least, consolation. Just like you, I'd rather come last in my tipping comp if it means the dees winning all the time.

Applying pressure comes down to effort, why does our effort drop against bottom sides.  Would love to see the behind the goals footage I bet it will show us not running hard to defend, we allowed Collingwood players to get goal side running hard.  I don't buy into we were flat we had a good break and we didn't turn up.

2 weeks ago Gerard Whately referred to the Collingwood vs Geelong game as the worst game of footy he’d ever seen, during the game. This was due to the Collingwood side’s poor performance and dour style of play. I agreed with him at the time. They were atrocious. But today they played out of their skins for Buckley. They won’t make finals.

Both Tmac and Fritsch had poor games but both got the ball twice more than Weid, hit the scoreboard and had more tackles. Most of the side had a poor game. Weid was the only hopeless one.

Right, full credit to Collingwood. Considering the key players they had missing they executed and beat us to our game. Well done to them.

Second of all I am putting the acid on our so called senior leaders. Petracca and Oliver can seriously jump into a trash bin. What the actual [censored] was that? The Hollywood style football they were dishing up was killing us especially when they were trying to take on one too many tackles. Petracca's disposal was absolutely putrid and just kept turning it over going inside 50. Oliver needs to seriously do something about his goal kicking. It will kill us come finals.

I'm sorry but I said this last year and Max Gawn isn't a leaders [censored]. Time and time again his useless taps to open space for Collingwood to pounce just killed us today. Has been doing it all year and yet we haven't rectified it. I could believe when he kicked it into the forward pocket to Pickett against 3 other Collingwood talls. Can the podcast for a while Max and focus on getting your connection with the mids because you got taught a lesson by a no namer.

Our defence was absolutely woeful. Lever, May and Petty were lazy and crap. Lever needs to actually read the game at times and just man up an opponent when it's there because dar too often he left his opponent far too open. The coaching staff will back Petty in and he just needs experience, but that's one game he'd rather forget. 

And lastly, we made another selection blunder but selecting Weideman. Was gobsmacked he was given another go. Today just proves what I've been saying the last few weeks and he's simply not a good AFL footballer. He's Michael Newton again in the way he'll dominate VFL level and suck everyone in, but he  simply doesn't have the football mental capacity in being what we all thought he be.

He's in his 6th year now and he's dishing up a performance that maybe you'd expect from 2nd year key forward who's finding his feet, but he's had far too many excuses now. Cut out losses at years end and take whatever you can.

Im not on a doomsday bandwagon, after a long long time im [censored] sick n tired of seeing results like this. Feel nervous going into games vs low teams, fine vs good teams. What as terrible cost me 2 10 packs of bourbon. Weid is finished time for the boom recruit to impact. Terrible effort only 2 players can hold their head up and that was Clarry and Gawn the rest were terrible. A real concern that we play so poorly against bottom sides. Must come out harder against Essendon we were soft not switched on. Rivers played his worst game for the year, McDonald done nothing, Kossie couldn't get into it. C'mon on Dees don't let our first half of the year be a waste and LIFT

In 1995, Carlton went 20 and 2 and won the flag in a canter. Apart from Essendon in 2000, it was the best individual season by a team in many, many years. They dropped two games for the year, consecutively in rounds 8 and 9 to Sydney and St Kilda, who finished 12th and 14th respectively.  They lost to Sydney by 72 points and to St Kilda by 56 points ( and only kicked three goals).  It happens - good teams lose to inferior teams.  It will keep happening because footy is as much mental as physical and no team is on all the time.  The best teams are rarely off, but they still have off days.  Let's see what the next 9 games hold in store.

Today was the perfect storm for Coll, make no mistake its a terrible loss to have against a struggler playing their GF for Bucks. Psychologically at the back of the players minds after the Bris game there was a 2 week period to take the foot of the pedal. 

At what other period of the season are the players going to get a chance to do that?

It's all systems go after this break time to take in all that has happen thus far to ponder and plan our Premiership assault.

Mentally and physically we looked flat and not appeared up for the contest.

In the grand scheme of things its not and end of the world loss. 

We are top 11-2. The sun will rise tommorow morning fellow Dees.

Good point but we have the track record of derailing our season when running hot by losing to poor teams. Next two rounds are huge games. Our percentage is also vulnerable because we haven’t piled on big wins when we have had the opportunity.

One of our massive ongoing problems still seems to be the minimum output we get from our experienced players. With many of them, their bad games are horrendous and costly, whereas what you should get with experience is that the 'quieter' performances are just ordinary games. Not sure what it is about our culture that sees guys who've played more than 100 games still turning up complete stinkers on the regular.
