Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Can anyone explain why when we kick out or line up after a goal our defenders are 10/20m away from the their opponents and we still insist on kick outs to go Long all the time and not use  the first kick to our advantage?

Fair question.

I presume its predictability but its also predictable to the oppo. In th pre season we varied our kick ins a lot. Have we reverted to old habits?

Watch the geelong game last year to see how they crushed us at the kick ins by having Blixacvs (!) jump over the top pf Max and smash it 15 m away where the Geelong smalls swept it away. Our players were at the feet of Max.

Good coaching by Scott. We learned nothing from that game IMO

After May went to King and with Petty forward, they were always going to get a mis match on Casbolt. Neither of Turner or Lever can match Levi in strength or aerially

In hindsight Tommo may have had been a better match up for Levi but overhead he isn't that great IMO

In the end Casbolt's game was probably in line with his career average - maybe one goal extra

Turner is a good player that will improve we just need to give him a better match up in future

We have a lot of trouble with tall forward lines.

Reid from Sydney has given us a lot of grief. Hipwood, Mason Cox, Casboult, Lobb on occasion. Daniher has created problems but fortunately can't kick.

We don't have a tall backman - ie over 200cm - that can take those players. Instead we rely on pressuring delivery. And when that breaks down we look terrible against the talls.

The point is valid but a lot of the issues we have had with those players have been when we have been missing out best key defenders.

Would honestly like to see him play consecutive games down back while Petty is working on his trade up forward.

If there is a period where investing game time and experience into guys that have been banging down the door then it's now with the likes or Hawthorn and Freo coming up over the next few weeks.

Gotta see whether some of these kids are up to it at AFL level.

i think Hibbert may come in to match up on Breust.

Thought he was coached poorly on the weekend.

I don't see how Turner can replace anyone other than Lever in our preferred backline - perhaps Hibberd against the right opposition. Tomlinson should be the replacement if May or Petty are missing and the opposition has two genuine giant forwards. A May, Tomlinson, Lever combination would have been a much better fit for Gold Coast.

Absolutely!

chol casboult and king vs lever May and turner was a mismatch on height weight

granted our first line of defence is inside our fwd pressure, second line is midfield transition running and third line is the defensive structure. After that it’s the defenders themselves.

I think we have to develop larger key backs

may 193

lever 195

Turner 192/4?

petty 197

they routinely defend 200 cm fwds

they do well - no dispute pound for pound but key fwds aren’t getting smaller

Adams 196

Schache  199

K. Turner  193

D. Turner  194

Tomlinson   194

other than Tommo, none of them big bodied yet.

We possibly need another big one, who can slot in when needed, until others develop.

schache gets pushed around too easily

Adams looks the goods but at 18 can still add 10 kg

schacke weighs the same as Hibbo

Have we ever considered trying D. Turner forward?

He looks a more natural defender to me. I’m not sure he is big enough or fast enough to play forward at AFL level. But it’s not the worst idea in future seasons.

Not sure about this. Petty has a lot of doubters up forward but has more of the build to play KPF than Turner. Still, a number of Demonlanders continue to put Tomlinson forward as an option despite no evidence that he can play there and I'd put Turner as an option ahead of Tommo. I actually think if you're going to go tall(ish) and mobile as an option up forward then Joel Smith might be worth trying.

Yep.

If in 4 seasons Tommo hasn't been within 5 miles of our forward line there has to be a reason for that.

To be fair, he only joined us pre-2020 and at that stage was brought in to play wing and was then a preferred part of our backline in 2021 (until he did his ACL). He probably hasn't had too many opportunites but they didn't trial him up forward last year despite TMac being out injured. The fact that Petty who was in our preferred backline at the start of 2023 is being trialled ahead of him is also a pretty fair indication of where he is in the forward line pecking order.

Yeah and that's the thing. I was open to it last year because it made sense with his height but if we weren't willing to try it then in our hour of need then why would we try now?

At this stage it's probably more likely Brayshaw will play key forward than Tommo.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
