Had a stinker

But has played some good games

He had 6 turnovers from 11 possessions. Was unusually poor by foot, but still lead the tackle count with Oliver (the most on the ground with 9).

JJ is and will be safe. That said, they may look to give him a rest soon.

Petty????

Yep, his ball use has been atrocious since coming in. I like him, he has a bit of mongrel, but he'd want to tidy up a bit if he plans on staying in longer than this week IMO. As mentioned, he and Hunt I think will both stay in for now.

I’m starting to think our best forward line is with TMac , Fritsch and Jackson/ Gawn with no Weed or Brown.

Giving us more options to bring in running players such as Bedford, Chandler Lockhart or Baker.

So for me it’s out Jetta, Melksham and Weed for Salem , Viney/Sparrow and Bedford or Baker

Not bad but i still think we can do with another tall forward and neither of Sparrow or Bedford are quite up to four quarters against rated clubs for now.

Against the bottom four maybe.

We need another mobile tall who can mark on the lead and hit the scoreboard but who's also quite good at pressuring inside 50.  Play T-Mac deeper this week against the Doggies and Brown on the lead into the 30/40 meter area.

Clear the rest out leaving only Kozzie and Fritschkreig the spoils or alternate / dummy leads out wider.

Assuming they are available for me it's...

Out:   Weid, Melk & Jetta

In:  Mitch Brown, Viney & Salem

If Viney and Salem aren't ready tthm Chunk and Lockhardt pinch hitting for Melk & Salem respectively until the cavalry arrives.

Sorry Rusty but as far I’m concerned if Mitch Brown comes in, regardless of form, with all of our tall forwards available for selection then we may as well give up.

Either stick with Weid or bring Ben Brown in at Marvel. I know both were garbage this week but I just can’t see any silver lining in bringing Mitch in for the Bulldogs, especially given he hasn’t played a game this year.

edit: in fact I’d rather drop Weid and go with the forward structure we had at the start of the year.

In: Viney, Salem

Out: Jetta, Melksham

Bad loss, but a good one to have before we take on the Dogs and Brisbane,  give Weid 2 more weeks like BB had and go from there.

We just played poorly in Adel, fumbly, ordinary inside 50 and missed opportunities.  Reset and have a solid outing this week against the Dogs.

I agree with this.

Make Ben Brown bang the door down.

Disappointed that Brown barely touched it.

That changes my ins and outs..

Agree. I thought BB would come in at Marvel where he has played very well, but given his game yesterday I doubt that will happen.

Salem is the one we really need back.

After watching the VFL (Thanks Swans YouTube) there is no way Weid should be omitted for 4 touch Benny Brown.  In saying that whilst the delivery was not great I thought his game on the weekend was poor in application. I would actually go smaller this week regardless, similar to the set up we had early in the season. I know he can be sketchy with his kicking but I really like the speed and pressure that Bedford brings and this would be the week to try it if we go smaller. Sparrow was serviceable  today (not as good as he has been) but gives us more depth this week through the middle.

Out Jetta, Melksham, Weid

In: Salem, Sparrow, Bedford.

I don't see Weid being dropped.

If Salem is ok I could see him and someone for Jetta and Melk.

Might be a good time to try Bedford as his pace would be an asset.

We might as well play Weid and find out for once and for all if he can play. He has had more chances than most and after 5 years in the system he looks a bust. No matter how much we want him to be a success.

Has all the attributes but just can't get enough of the footy.

If he fails againtst the Dogs we should go with BB who is a proven forward - for the rest of the year.

we already know in my opinion

I know you broke the Salem one pre game. Have you heard if he's good to go this weekend?

How could anyone seriously think including BB against the dogs is worth considering

Virtually zero output in a VFL game when a spot in the AFL team beckoned - really really really disappointing

Yeah, completely disagree. I think he turned it over once by foot, otherwise was clean.

Am hoping he is good to go, but don't know. Goody did say he thought he would play friday.

Dees were able to 'fix' their issues at clearance but other elements of their game have dropped off which they can look to address at the selection table.

We lost the turnover points allowed/conceded which I believe we were previously no.1 with post clearance contests and intercepts. Salem was a very noticeable out with our backline lacking the link up as well as a good distributor sweeping past the clearance to distribute on the outside.

The other area of concern was the ease at which the Crows i50 where they were given time and space to pick out mismatches and hit players on the lead. A lot of this came from the inability of our forwards to maintain the pressure on defenders with Seedsman and co able to link up and deliver to Tex and Co.

Great that we trialled the ultra big line up but now need to adjust the forward line for both full ground pressure and win contests forward of the ball. We also far too reliant on Salem and require an additional good ball user behind the ball to ensure teams can't tag Salem and hinder our ball movement as what we saw.

My changes would be - Out: Jetta, Hibberd, melksham (inj); In: Salem, Bowey and Sparrow

TMac moved to the wing, is a better runner than brayshaw and helps out the defense in a way that Brayshaw can't, which allows Gawn to work more forward.  Brayshaw is a known goal kicker, puts immense pressure on and is a good distributor, an also help our oliver/petracca/harmes rotate forward/mid. Hibberd is a tough out but we need a better distributor in Bowey to compliment Salem. Sparrow is another player who puts immense pressure with great defensive running as well as the ability to rotate through the midfield. Bulldogs have some very speedy outside players which require Sparrow's running capacity without the ball.

If we can match Liberatore in the contest and stop the Bulldogs spread, big if, then we win the game.

Salem for Jetta the obvious one if Salem is fit.
If Viney is fit, he'll come straight back into the team, and not via the VFL. But I can't see Melksham being the player dropped for his return.
Harmes & Jordon play the role that Viney would normally play.
I'm not disagreeing with those saying that we seem to struggle with the extra tall in the forward line,... TMac, Fritsch and Jackson/Gawn with Spargo, Pickett, Melk and ANB seems to work better for us than the extra tall at the moment, but it's also a forward line that the dogs would be able to manage easier with their defence.

You hear Gawn, Petracca and Goody talk about the side playing a more selfless game, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Weid & BBB, which you can kinda understand given that their position in the side is less assured. Our talls are not spreading in the forward line and they are going for the same marks and spoiling each other.

some of his turn overs are down to his in ability to control his long kicks imv, which i'm not super worried about, i don't think he's a bad kick as such, but he's not and never will be a christian Salem by foot

Because he was our big recruit! Because he kicked a lot of goals a few seasons ago! Because he has a huge tank and long arms! Because Weid sucks full stop!

Can't think of any more reasons why some on here think he's the answer. Has looked super average and honestly a slight liability when playing so far apart from Syd and some games against average sides in the VFL.

Sparrow is a must in for mine. I think he was only squeezed out for guys like Harmes who has been OK since coming back but would love to see Sparrow back in.

I really dislike how easily Melksham comes back in to the side. I know there's the Goodwin's favourite narrative but he just gives very little apart from a few decent inside 50's a game. I'd rather see Harmes and Bayley player his high HF role and Sparrow come in to fill in more time in the middle for Harmes' rotation there.

I like the idea of Viney back this week but if he's not 100% which I can't imagine he I'd rather he take another week off. Brining him back against the slickest side on the quickest ground isn't a good idea imo.

Posted

Doggies have one key weakness in that they lack height down back. Richmond towelled them up with Lynch and Reiwoldt taking 19 marks between them. (11 inside 50s). Its their Achilles heel imo.

All this talk of forward pressure and tackling is great but if the ball hits the ground, their half backs of Daniel and Dale will continually rebound, despite our pressure which may or may not be there. Respect the strength and exploit the weakness imo.  Stretch them and get 10-12 scoring shots from marks/free kicks and we're a chance of kicking 100 points.  I dont trust Ben Brown to tackle, but i do trust him to draw 2 defenders, get free kicks, and create open leading lanes for others. I dont know what i trust Weeds to do in this regard unfor.

In, salem viney brown.

Out jetta, melksham, weed

And i'd definitely have someone playing a forward defensive role on Daniel. His ball use is first rate.

Weid wasn't the issue on the weekend. He's played just two games and I think looked OK playing his role as a lead up forward.

His stats were practically identical to McDonalds yesterday. I thought he presented well and created marking contests both deep and further up the ground. He looks more imposing with his size and I think he'll work into AFL form soon enough. Apologies for being a believer.

@Jjrogan on the fast deck at Marvel I really don't think BB has the speed and agility to get into space at the moment. Not sure if he's just lost his burst but his inability to separate off his man is a real concern and from those who went to the Casey game whom I've spoken to he really struggled this week. Weid is much more mobile and gives your greater intensity/pressure when the ball hits the deck. Brown has looked almost in slow motion if he doesn't mark the ball and struggles to re-engage at the contest.
