You'd suspect Sparrow would have come in for Viney if his injury was known Thursday. The most like for like IMO.

So out Baker, in Sparrow. Toughness is a must given the swans mids.

Out Tomlinson, in Petty. It's his time.

TMac was only one wayward kick away out of defence today for the sentiment to be entirely different haha.

Nailed it.

Sparrow was a class above in the vfl.

I don't think baker will make it.

Petty is a lock for Tomlinson's role. And we won't lose anything either. Petty is a gun and will slot in beautifully.

Heartbreaking for thommo.

I'm torn on the Petty or McDonald down back.

I honestly thought the reason we got back into the game was Tom McDonald going back and strengthening our structures back to its norm. Not only that, he defended quiet well and it actually released Lever off Campbell to play his natural 3rd man role.

The other aspect is Petty needs games as well because we need to see if he's got what it takes down back. He's inexperienced, so supporters will need to be patient because he'll make some mistakes that'll tear your hair out. But I rate him highly and think that after a good block of games he'll settle into the role perfectly. I'm also a big fan of his intercept marking. You can never have enough of them down back who read the play well.

I think they'll bring Petty in and potentially move McDonald to a wing to take Bakers spot.

Baker goes out and Sparrow comes in.

I'm also really big in getting Sam Weideman in there somehow. How we structure that up I have no idea.

Out: Tomlinson, Baker, (Jones)

In: Petty, Sparrow

If Viney is good then he plays instead of Sparrow.

No doubt for me we need another tall to cover Tommo, and Petty is obviously next in line. I’d be just as happy to move TMac back now and bring Weid in, I’m just nervous about moving too far away from what’s been working.

Oskar Baker a way off I think. His tackles don’t stick, his defensive efforts are lacking and his ball use doesn’t have the hurt factor to compensate. I’ve got much more trust in Sparrow to deliver in that regard.

To be honest, I'm a little unsure of where to go with our lineup.

I sense that a Brown/Weed combo might make us too sluggish for our game style, but I'm going to run with it anyway on the back of the Tomlinson injury.

Out: Baker, Melksham, Tomlinson

In: Weideman, Sparrow, Bedford

TMac to stay back.

I wouldn't have a clue whether this works or not. Gee, it's a tough job picking the team at the moment.

Nibbler was very poor today but has some credits in the bank.

ANB is a spud, he played ok against Richmond, 2 weeks ago against the Hawks he did nothing, had about 10 clangers in a row, today he was usless, he’s horrible

So, you take the name of one of our all-time greats then come on here and call a player a "spud"; classy act you've got going there in your marathon contribution of 143 posts!

The negativity around Melksham is bordering on War of The Worlds mass hysteria. If you took the time to watch the second half replay you might notice that Melksham played a key link-up role in our recovery... Nah! you wouldn't notice!

IMO the path we take will depend on whether Fritsch gets suspended.

If he does, I suspect TMac will stay forward. Too much change to the forward line. In that event, Petty comes in for Tomlinson.

If he doesn't get suspended, then the question is whether we feel comfortable with TMac in defence. I'm very, very unsure about it. But I can see why they'll want to do it, as it opens a spot for Weideman without having to drop someone.

Sparrow should replace Baker. Should never have played Baker today, he was terrible and just isn't improving. Go back to what has been working for us with Brayshaw on the non-Langdon wing predominantly, and get Sparrow into Viney's role whilst Viney's out.

Jones probably deserves to return to the 22 but that means someone else has to come out. Could be ANB, who was poor. Could be Melksham, but his 18 pressure acts are probably what the FD wants to see so I'd be surprised.

Suffice to say, I disagree. He is a big part of the reason we are having some early season success. Along with Spargo and Kozzy, he applies huge pressure on the opposition.

If you judge him against his job description, today was his first poor game of the season.

I’m still not sold on Petty; his reputation over the last 12 months has grown and grown the longer he hasn’t played.  He’s the new Joel Smith.  He may be a gun, but he’s not the first in line imho.

I think a spot in the 22 is TMac's to lose, so I’d look to have him play CHB and bring in the Weideman to CHF.

Jones out, to be replaced by Harmes and Sparrow in for Viney.

I doubt Goodwin would want to see more changes than that, but if Melksham or Baker was in the gun, I’d be happy to see what a more mature Bedford has to offer.

HIBBERD.          MAY.                      LEVER.
SALEM.             MCDONALD.        RIVERS.
LANGDON.       OLIVER.         BRAYSHAW.
HARMES.          WEIDEMAN.       SPARGO.
PICKETT.           BROWN.             FRITSCH.
GAWN.               PETRACCA.       JORDON.

INTERCHANGE:
HUNT.  JACKSON.  SPARROW.  ANB.
And one of the following as sub:
MELKSHAM.   BEDFORD.   BAKER.

I don't think this is what will happen but if it were up to me the changes would be

OUT: Tommlinson, Baker

iN:   Harmes, Weideman.

McDonald goes back. we maintain 3 key talls up forward. Brayshaw stays in Vineys role on the inside, Harmes out on the wing.

I'm thinking pretty similarly but I'd be giving ANB another crack.

I'm with you on Bedford but unfortunately, Melksham is somehow the golden child and can't be removed.

God!  How did I miss him!?

No, ANB is definitely in.

Even with some injuries, selection is very, very tough.

Nailed it IMHO. Nibbler on the interchange, Bedford to replace Fritsch (if suspended), Jones to be medical sub again (which adds to his tally). Baker, Petty & Melksham as emergencies.

Something to consider with the replacement of Tommo is that this isn’t a temporary 1-2 week deal, this is very likely a season deal. So whoever we replace him with this week we should be considering to be the permanent replacement.

So of the options available who do we think would be the best option not just for now but first week of finals? Much as I said Petty before, and I’ll clarify I still haven’t seen the match yet, it sounds like TMac slotted into the role quite well. He is more experienced and simply I would say a better footy player. Tom has earned a position in the team and this gives that to him with Weid being able to come in to play CHF. TMac also has flexibility about him and the tank to play multiple roles.

I’m on board with the Weid for Tommo, TMac back to defence.

he was bloody horrific!!! he was weak on the lead. he never got separation and he gave a costly free kick away in the last quarter which resulted in a north goal. He also dropped the easiest of marks that would've sealed the game. he is a must drop.

Such incredible intellect. I really feel like I'm reading greatness.

Ben Brown if he is to play fwd in place of Tmac (on the the assumption he is going back) needs to get up the ground more and be a link man, the real strength of tmac this year was his work round the ground not the goals he kicked. He gets a pass today being his first week in but going forward he needs to contribute more. The same for Weid when he gets his chance. Unless they can kick 3-4 a week the talls need to do more in other ways. 2 goals and 5 touches won’t cut it

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
