"Do you know the difference between involvement and commitment? Think of ham and eggs. The chicken is involved but the pig is committed!"

"There is just one thing I want to commend you on and thats the way most of you are going in very hard to get the ball.BUT, he added with an ominous tone in his voice , there are a few of you that are hanging back from intense contact and unless these players show more guts , I won't put you in against Hawthorn"

And so it was forseen that in any given game at any given time unless you go hard even in a match simulation you won't get picked. So today as I ventuered out to CASEY FIELDS, The intraclub hitout was just that... Intense, hard, no beg pardons and on display around 35 or so players all striving to get noticed to show something, anything that might propel them in with a shot of the game Vs Geelong on Sunday.

Skills , Drills and Manuevers,

More or less same drills as desribed in previous posts with warmups, drills specifically attuned to busrting out from defence running in pack formation , canny use of the ground and with skills by hand and foot certainly noticeable. Of more specificity, protecting the ball carrier, creating options, two way running were featured. I certainly was a little concerned when I saw that match simulation featuring Blue probables vs Pink possibles ensued given that this is cause for injury concern , but given Ron Barasi's quote as above if its good enough for Ron then its gotta be good enough for Goody and co.

The Match Ups

Interestingly a Pink Forward line of Ben Brown (who moved well) Weeds, Majak and Mitch Brown is going to cause the opposition of May, Tomlinson and Lever some Alice Cooper moments ( Welcome to my Nightmare)  but the Blues led by Clayton Oliver, Jack Viney, Angus B and Nibbler provided first use to McDonald, Kossie (who again put on a clinic) and Fritta.

Others of note were Langdon, Rossman was involved, Chunky, Tracc, and Rivers. Gee Sparrow is as hard as a Cats head and Jordon is certainly improving outa site! Bowey and Laurie also did some useful things.

Other than that at conclusion of match simulation players practiced goal kicking into a fierce North Wind but many shots were executed well. In particular Majak Daw hardly missed from a variety of angles.

Harmsy ran laps but had no tape or any strapping on his injured Wrist and showed no discomfort. I would almost suggest that the team may go in unchanged from last week. I just cannot see how the possibility of Melksham can squeeze in in place of??? Maybe Hibbo might get a gig but again this current team is gelling well.

One other thing gee this team looks fit, I reckon Geelong will find it hard to run out the game given how fit we are at present. Kudos to Darren Burgess!

Cheers PF

Loved this report, pf. Full of historical analogies, relevance and mind-stirring expectations of players and the will to be part of a great footy win. Nice profiling, too. Much appreciated...

I've said this before, but how can players practise goal kicking at a windy site like Casey?  When they miss (or score) they won't know if it was their technique or the wind that was the cause.

Yes he trained and looked unhampered Sue

Picket your training posts (in this neck of the woods at least) have now achieved legendary status. Glad they're back! Best read of the week on DL by a country kilometer. Stirring stuff! Set the scene for a late Sunday showdown at the 'G'. May the PA be belting out Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare and the boyz come out with real intent.

Yes they will. Newsflash Aussie rules football is played outside in the elements, apart from 2-3 games a year for Melbourne.

Do you think Tullamarine isn't windy. Whitten oval, Waverly etc

If they can kick them in the wind, they should be a lot better when there is no wind.

Totally disagree. Double newsflash. Of course you have to learn how to handle the wind, but you first have to perfect your techinque so that the ball goes where you are aiming.  Then take into account the wind.   If you practice in windy conditions and you miss you don't know if your technique was to blame or your failure to take correct account of the wind.  I'd have thought this was bloody obvious.

This is an excellent point.

maybe that's why big maxie always allows for the wind even when there is none?

Max's set shot is totally 50/50 - his ball drop is always angled

as is his body and run up.....he mostly always takes a small step to the right. he'd do better running perfectly straight

Its just a step to the right. And bring your knees in tight.

Seriously though, BBB is the perfect coach for max' shots on goal.

The thing about Gawn's kicking is that the result is consistent. Therefore, he doesn't need to change his technique. All he has to do is aim further to the right each time.

He should take a look at Darren Bennett's technique - hold the ball down as close to his boot as possible in the run up to allow for as little deviation as possible when releasing the ball from hand to boot.

True. It has a big right to left hook.

I just get so nervous when Max has a set shot.

Same with Jacko and Clarry (I would of said Fritta too but I like his action, the result is just all over the place).

Noice PF.  When is the next training sesh anyone know yet?

Now that is an excellent (the best so far) suggestion and the key to kicking intentionally straight. Great example, in Bennett, too; boy, could he kick straight from any distance, wind or no wind.

This is what TMac did in 2018. He has drifted from that recently but was a dead eye [censored] back then

Against Freo at least 8 of our 14 points went left.

So, roughly half...?  (Give or take...)

How is Bowey, Laurie and Rossman going?

Anyone got updates with where they are all at?

From my perspective each has a "Bag of Tricks" Bowey is hard at it and QUICK and at some piont might oust Spargo, however Spargo is doing all he should so put that away for the time being. Laurie has polish and great football smarts and is sure to feature at some stage. Rosman to me will be "The Enigma" can take strong grabs, kicks freak goals and is elusive. I would think the club would be very happy with these three. Cant wait to see them in Praccy game Vs Willi on Sat

Could one of Bowie or Laurie replace Jetta at some stage?

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
