I find it interesting that those who rattle on about snowflakes, cancel culture, and freedom of speech are the most thin skinned and defensive and have the largest persecution complex when something is mentioned that remotely and vaguely threatens their world view.?
Novel idea I know, but perhaps those doubting @theacademic's motives could actually take the survey. Without biasing the results, it actually does give one the chance to outline one's beliefs about racism  and whether it exists or not among football fans. ? Just a thought.

So who's rattling on about snowflakes etc???
Being thin skinned etc.
I'll give you a hint .....
It's you.

Perhaps the choice of words you used about how I put forward my case isn’t how I would describe what I said, but I did use those terms. Well spotted.

And your point is?

My point is that no-one said anything about any of that sheet but you.

So are you implying that because I am the only one who has raised this double standard so far, that it doesn’t exist here on Demonland or in any other part of society?

Done. It's been a long time since I heard a racist comment at a game but I've noticed a little online.

I do have an ideology beyond snark and glib comments.

nothing snarky or glib about my comments, colin.

your comment however was just lazy and playing identity politics, only compounded by your failure to accept it when called out.

i thought i pointed it out yo you quite politely

I took the survey in good faith.

Unfortunately, most of my answers were limited to binary yes or no when I felt I had more to contribute.

Then of course came my gender question and I had all sorts of options when it could have just been binary.

I thought I was an ideologue? Now, I’m dealing in identity politics. Make up your mind.

You should change your name from Daisycutter to Pizzacutter. You’re all edge and no point.

very clever........but all you did is shift the goalposts

i'll leave you to your delusions

by the way, i didn't say you were a ideologue, just that your sweeping comment made you sound like an ideologue. hope that's not too subtle for you to grasp

LOL talk about a tonne of answers to choose from. And even after all those answers, you had the option to “describe yourself” if none of the answers were applicable.

That is the very first thing that crossed my mind when I read "academic at the University of South Australia" and "research on fans' views of racism in the AFL".

Would expect the academic already has an end point in mind and is simply looking to fill the spaces in between.

Took the survey anyway. Is not very in depth. In fact it seemed incredibly shallow.

Of course their is racism. Is it a big problem in the AFL? Not now that Eddie McGuire has left the scene. The stuff he was allowed to get away with was astonishing. That is where the O.P should start with his survey.

‘Of course there is racism’ what makes you say that?

Survey done and good questions, not sure about the relevance of my answers. Racism is common I think but must admit I haven’t heard it for years at a game but then I have a reserved seat in our MFC area. Most of our fans are too busy abusing the umpires to worry about some swarthy types playing for the opposition.

Done.

Good luck with your work.

Isn’t that the definition of hypothesis?

The survey asks about racist comments from the crowd. Yes I've heard racist comments, including from indigenous people towards the "white dog". (Admittedly that was years ago now)

I'd bet that in game racist comments are extremely rare now, as it would be immediately brought to people's attention or even recorded by the TV audio.

But in the crowd, I'd say it still happens. From ALL race backgrounds.

Research Rule 1

start off with your ‘Conclusion’

Research Rule 2

make sure that you write a good ‘research question’ to support your ‘Conclusion’

Research Rule 3

assemble roughly 80,000 words of indecipherable tables, surveys, statistics and quotes from the ‘French philosophers’ and insert between your ‘Introduction’ (Research Question) and your ‘Conclusion’!

Survey done.

Which reminds me that it is possible to be gender-fluid and retain a dry sense of humour.

Good luck with the findings @theacademic. Timely with Adam Goodes declining to be included in the Hall of Fame.

Yes I thought the same thing

I understand why Goodes has problems with the way he was treated but I don't really understand his reasons for rejecting what appears to me to be clear recognition of his contribution and significance to the game

Feels like we can never forget or forgive and move on and therefore racial tensions can never be resolved - rejecting the invitation may make a statement that your [censored] off but it doesn't seem to help with reconciliation and healing which has to start somewhere/sometime

I find it incredibly unfortunate that that a simple survey of football supporters' view undertaken for academic research is seen by some as so controversial.

It's just a survey.

It's hard to draw any conclusions on anything without decent data, and all views are welcomed because it gives a best chance of getting a snapshot of what is actually happening.

Having watched the documentary they did on his last season, I would say he doesn't want anything to do with the AFL. Fair enough

I don't think Adam Goodes owes anything to anyone. Last time he took a stand on racial issues, he spent the remainder of his career getting booed by crowds, and mocked by a club president. Why should he jump at the opportunity to 'help with reconciliation and healing' when he got burned so badly in the past

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
