I saw Caro say this on FC last night. She also said to her knowledge, he was contracted till the end of this year, or maybe next.

However, if anyone saw Gus and Gawny's podcast 2-3 weeks ago, Darren Burgess was their guest. Gawny was going through his history at other clubs/codes and I replayed this comment twice to be sure I heard it correctly. He said that Burgess started at the Dees in 2019 and was contracted till 2024, to which Darren replied "At least!"

Obviously things can and may have changed in that short space of time. From Adelaide originally, I think he has separated from his wife and has children over there, hence the family reasons for maybe needing to return, and who could begrudge him that - family should always come first. The Adelaide rumours have been around awhile.

However, Caro prides herself on getting her facts right, and her statement about his current contract status, contradicts what I saw and heard on the podcast, so hopefully she is just basing her comments on that rumour.

However, support staff are more easily moved on than players in these circumstances and COVID saw many of them released last year without a position to go to. The necessary financial winds of change then may have brought in a culture shift now and people's mental well-being is paramount. Contracts can be fluid or even broken it seems, particularly for personal reasons.

I would hate to lose him and I'm sure he would have a major input as to his replacement with a program handover to follow. However the players should now be professional enough to know what is required, to know that what he has mapped out for them is working and any change should be relatively seamless.

That said, I hope he stays. Time will tell.

If this is the case I don't imagine family relocation is an option. And the club's 'respect privacy' stance seems to support that it is the case?

The contract length discrepancy is interesting, as is the recentness of Burgess's apparent position vs nothing since March from C. Wilson. Anyone got any more?

Re the Brisbane guy, Brisbane's last quarter against us isn't a ringing endorsement....

Mind you, our last quarter against Collingwood?...

Bad news on this front, I'm afraid. It is considered a given that Burgo is off to Adelaide. But leaving a top team behind him at the Dees should soften the blow.

With someone of Darren’s quality sometimes it’s not just the message but the person delivering the message. Two people might say the exact same thing but if one of them is Darren the player might listen a lot more.

Expect an announcement on this in the next fortnight. Burgess to return to Adelaide and Selwyn Griffiths to be our performance guru.

As I understand it Selwyn Griffiths was the fitness and conditioning guru at Lions who was credited for a lot of their build up the ladder fitness wise. We poached him end of last season and he's being mentored by Burgess this year. He sounds like he's in the mix amongst the best with Burgess, and Russell at Blues. Here's hoping.

So he's actually leaving now?? Not wait until end of the year?

Who is Selwyn Griffiths? Is a good replacement?

Fair enough.

I honestly wish him the best. Being away from his kids would be incredibly difficult, especially during these on and off lock downs.

Thanks heaps and all the best Burgo.

I have also been assured that our replacement is a young gun, who has been working closely with Burgo, so he is not leaving us in the lurch.

On a side note, was our dominant last quarter (aside from the scoreboard) due to the following:

1. The Burgess factor

2. GWS tiring after 3 outstanding quarters by them

3. Us finally taking the game seriously

If Burgo is, indeed going, then we cannot thank him enough, for his contribution, to the list's fitness.

However, our more recent lapses on game day, where we have incurred losses, have nothing to do with Burgo or his fitness regime.  To me, it is for a number of other reasons, which can only be sheeted home to the coaching staff.

  • Adelaide.  The MFC were top of the ladder.  It had seemed we had shown our credentials by beating other contenders, including the Bullies.  Simply, we were not mentally prepared.
  • Collingwood.  Given it was Buckley's last game as coach, they were always going to come out, with fire in their bellies. We surely should have been acutely aware of that factor.  On the other side of that coin, it was Neale Daniher's Queen's Birthday, Big Freeze game.  A guy that coached Melbourne for over 10 years and while there were some down years, under Neale's stewardship, he gave us plenty of joy.  We owe him.  Simply, we were not mentally prepared.
  • GWS.  After some ordinary performances and some surprising losses, the Giants were still on the verge of the 8, when they played us last Saturday. Simply, we were not mentally prepared.
  • Our midfield guns are now marked men.  Their earlier from was stellar.  They are hunted by the opposition now.  It was perhaps, Clarrie's, Trac's and Viney's worst games for a while.  Opposition coaches have worked out our previous use of the "corridor".  Our coaching staff need to adapt.  Simply, we were not mentally prepared.
  • Kossie and Dogga are still quite young.  To me Kozzie, in particular, looks tired and sore.  Understanding the loss of his Mum, he still played some amazing games, following his return to Melbourne.  Do these young fellas need a rest before the finals?
  • It would also seem that most opposition teams have worked out of forward structure.  T Mac has done an amazing job this year, given he was on the trade table last year. But he was never and is not a natural forward.  Fritta is slight, not a tall key forward and gets knocked around.
  • Recent history show us (see Ross Lyon), that you cannot win a grannie, if you do not put the required score on the board.  A great defence - like we have now - is not enough to get to the pinnacle.
  • We got BB and had the Weid on our list for a while, both recruited as key, tall forwards.  My view now is, going into the home straight, we have to bite the bullet and persist with one or the other before the finals.  My view is Big Ben Brown is the one, but if he is to be, he needs the space to lead into.

My opinions only.

A huge loss although softened so,ewhat as the replacement has been mentored by Burgo. Was always surprised Dees attracted Burgo in the first place

This is a highly creative way to have your opinion on the team's recent losses stand out from all those other opinions in all those other threads about the team's recent losses. Not even the biggest trolls on here would disagree with your bolded premise.

A long fortnight 🤣

Sad news. He is brilliant and I wish him and his family all the best.

Hopefully we've drained all that magic juice out of his brain the last two years and are now well set up to continue with the program he set up.

Sad, but expected. All you can hope is that the lessons learned have been put into a plan for future seasons. He’s helped us get to a premiership, not much more you can ask of him.

I hope Adelaide aren’t in the mix for a while.

So does Selwyn step into Burgess role?  Or do we bring someone else in?

Selwyn is taking Burgo's role. He's been following him closely all year and knows all the planning and structures in place to keep the players in top condition. Apparently the players will be even fitter next year as we peak in fitness.

Selwyn was a former sports and conditioning coach at Brisbane, so he's not new to the role. He also has an Osteopathy background.

Thank you so much for the past 2 seasons burgo.

Can't wait to see you at the premiership reunion in a few years time.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
