Why we beat St.Kilda

The Saints have:

- Had a hard fight in the last to win;

- One day less recovery;

- Return travel; and

- They ran a combined 294.8 km vs our 275 km (nearly 1 km per player extra).

I'm not sure how much this matters in round 1. Are the players fresh so it doesn't matter? Or is the first hit out tough to recover from?

Combined km is an interesting metric, I'd not thought of that. It's probably important who runs the distance eh?

Eg my main man Ed Langdon running 21km is probably just a light run for him, but Viney running 21km?

Is that a joke?

membrey is the least of our concerns

Did you even watch the game lmao?  Membrey was really good for the Saints, marked nearly everything that came his way, also his kicking was good.

So dismissive of a player who had a great game, and usually kicks at least a few against us at the least.

It’ll boil down to slotting our set-shots. The saint were very good in this department yesterday considering the conditions.

Trac has a critical role to play. He beat the saints last year. They don’t match up on him well so he could snag a 5-goal haul. Fritsch and TMac to contribute also. I feel we’ll need to kick 15-8 or similar to win.

You would think Ratten was up there with Norm, Jock McHale etc given some of the talk on here. Saints are an average team.

We beat them last year and will do it again this week.

St Kilda is a game we should win if we are to make the 8, let alone top 4. They are in the 7 or 8 middle list sides just like us.This is exactly the sort of game we have a habit of dropping under Goodwin, apart from 2018. Be an interesting indicator of whether anything has changed this year. I fear it hasn’t.....

I hope the "why we beat x team' thread continues weekly.... it's a positive place for positive people.

Don't get too comfortable, next time we lose there'll be a "why we'll never win another game" thread

They will be heavy legged after today's slogfest with BWS, we have had an extra day and a half to recover, slept in their own beds.

Something on your mind mate? Lockdown been tough on us all. ?

I think its quite evident that old mate Roost it doesn't watch saints games or has any idea that in the past Tim Membrey has absolutely owned us.

Don't take him serious.

Two things important for us to do well if we want to win:

1. Defensive spread from our midfielders. Freo waltzed around us in numbers through the middle of the ground and they achieved 50+ inside 50's. However, at one point we had Jordon, Sparrow and Bradshaw at some centre bounces which didn't help. Viney in is a massive bonus if he is fit.

2. If we hit our targets inside 50, we win. On Saturday, our delivery into 50 and set shot goal kicking was embarrassing.

Who is going to stop their midget, speedy forwards?

This is why Hunt needs to stay in the side. While he had a disappointing game, he's the only one who can keep up with their smalls when they slingshot out the back.

Jetta just needs to lock down on Higgins or Lonie and don't worry about getting a touch. He's got the smarts to use his body positioning and strength to at least keep up with them around the contests.

Nick Smith who played at the Swans was a back pocket specialist who u had huge respect for. Played on the games best forwards in Betts, Rioli, Didak and would just completely shut them out of the game just due to his discipline style and body positioning. Wasn't quick either, but did the job.

Whilst I agree Membrey is a key to the Saints I’m confident we have the defence to nullify him. We just need to match them on the outside and the games ours

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

    Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

    In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

    CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

    The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
