Happy 85th birthday Ron Barassi!

I haven't seen him or heard of him for quite a while.

Does anyone know how he's travelling?

He was at my Grandfather‘a funeral back in 2019 and physically seemed pretty good but unfortunately I think dementia was setting in.

While my father played for the swans, it was only because of the inspirational Ronald Dale Barassi that I started following the Dees.

You bast ard Ron!

A very happy birthday Ron. Gee, you broke my little heart when you went to Carlton, but all is forgiven. I trust we see you at the footy again this year all wrapped up in your red and blue scarf and cheering on your Demons.

You have to remember that back in 1965, the Demons were “the Team.” Half the footy population loved us and the rest hated us. We had a huge supporter base and most  kids who barracked for the Dees wore 31 on their back. So when Ron went to Carlton, the impact was seismic. The shock that went through supporters and the footy world was of a magnitude that has not been felt since. Dismay and tears were the order of the day. Times have changed so that if Dusty was to leave the Tigers the impact would be like a wind change rather than an earthquake.

Despite Ron leaving, the respect for Ron continued. That’s really something. Respect.

There has been no one like Ron.

Simply, The Legend.

I wore The No 31 on my first jumper Of the Demons At the moment I don't  have a No on the one on a bust/lamp in my bedroom but Trac No 5 is preferred.

Ronald Dale Barrasi -

The Champion,

The Legend.

Best of the Best, congratulations Ron. !!!

I must admit i have had over the years a degree of empathy for Ron because as it turned out the sixties was a time of great transition in Australia Sport.

In tennis especially, professionalism was the way of the future, and the future has not looked back. I will leave it at that. in other words being involved in sport meant moving on from Kooyong to Laver..

Ernie, would the Brent Grgic to Geelong situation run a close 2nd?

I have a number of Demons’ stickers on my vehicle so there’s no dilemma as to which team I support.
A few years ago I was stopped at a traffic light and the female driver of the car next to me gesticulated to wind my passenger side window down.

As I was doing so, the rear window of the woman’s car was also wound down and none other than the great RDB appeared and clenched his fist as he bellowed out to me ‘GO DEES’ .
It was a cherished moment, until I had the honour, along with my kids, to pose for a number of photos with the great man that would appear in the HeraldSun on the weekend just prior to our 2018 finals campaign.

As a number, ' 31 ' is the most evocative and for me and many others, always will be so silently, highly regarded and reminiscent.

As a boy we struggled a bit financially-for many years I kicked a plastic footy when my mates with their real "footies:"were not around. I didn't have a footy jumper so I wrote to the great man asking him for one of his. I posted it addressed to Ron via the club -in a scenario akin to sending a Christmas wish to Santa at the North Pole!

I received a lovely photo with his signature saying:- "Sorry no jumper Tim - I hope this will help." This has become more poignant now as I received this a week before his big move to Carlton was announced.

He must have had a million things on his mind at the time. But thats Barass-he knew how important things like this were to young kids. A great man Ron-always an inspiration to me. :)
