i agree, we seem to drag this stuff on..

A bit like Sydney, who finished in the bottom 4 but haven't made a single list change yet?

Or Hawthorn, who also finished in the bottom 4 but haven't delisted a single player yet? Or GWS (also no delistings)?

Oscar Mcdonald surely won't get another contract

I still cannot believe he’s played 81 games.  We gave him about 20 games for his development which hadn’t really seen any progress since. Surely he must be delisted. Surely.

What are you on about? He was never on Collingwoods AFL list. He was recruited from their VFL team after winning back to back best and fairest.

At one stage last year he was leading the AFL competition for intercept marks.

Oscar is finished. 5 years on the list and has not improved one bit. Matter of fact he's gotten worse.

DD, being bored last night I watched the second half of both of our winning finals in 2018. I suggest you do likewise. If u do I think u may agree there is no way we should delist OMac and neither should we trade TomMac . Give them both specific targets over the summer then see what they can do in 2021

aren't you a genius. first round draft picks look better than mid season draft top up players.  you need to have a 45th player on your list.  quite likely they won't make it.  we gave him a crack and he didnt make it.  we move on

Exactly!!! Take Josh Wagner. In my opinion excellent recruiting. He was overlooked in two drafts . We picked him as a mature age rookie. How many mature age rookies play as many games as he did. And he played some very good games. He was never in our best 22, nowhere near it , but he was a bloody good backup on the HBF. Our latest recruiting has made him superfluous ,he would  understand that . Anyone can select excellent kids from the first two rounds of the draft. It’s the ability to get value from the lesser known selections which demonstrates good team management

The trouble with delisting Oscar McDonald is he is our third best key position defender.

Necessary depth at this time.  Even if Tomlinson does move primarily to defence I can't see him as a true 'key defender'

A similar argument could be made for persevering with Tom McDonald except he is on at least double, perhaps three times as much money as he's worth if all he is is a depth player who might regain form 'some day'.

If we're delisting from defence, surely Joel Smith if finished back there.  He's either moving to the forward line in 2021 or out the door.

Nah.

They both need to go.

I think you'll find the club is trying to see if there are any takers for Oscar before making a decision one way or the other.

And despite what some think, there may be a taker or two.

O Mac has been poor but he is good back up if we have injuries. If may and lever go down. Who plays?

Petty is a better player.

We know he can also play forward, but I see him long-term in defence.  He could be a terrific key defender.

I can't believe Picket Fence's name hasn't come up in the delistings discussion.

On too much coin, haven't got funds for a pay out! Highly capable, passionate, can kick super goals on occasions, though erratic at times. Keeper for sure! Entertainment factor high!

I personally would rookie Oscar. This will free up his salary from approx $300k to $75k, whilst still being a back up if needed.

I would then draft a key position back with our 1st pick (only if we address our wing and key forward issues in the trade), which will provide back up, but more importantly, hopefully be May’s successor in 3 or 4 years time.

I think Tomlinson and J.Smith are the 3rd and 4th key defenders now. Oscar can be the 5th, whilst our 1st pick in the draft could be our 6th. Could be 1 too many numbers in that position, but with Tomlinson and J.Smith still learning their role back there, I think it’s essential to have 6.

Thoughts?

Joel Smith should be delisted ahead of OMac. I posted on another thread that I think Tomlinson will become a full-time defender and we’ll look for another wingman.

Agreed. He's a much better mark than Oscar too. Still think he's a bit of a Lever clone with slightly better contest to him.

petty may well be a better player that o mac and smith, but he's also played 11 games in three seasons of football

for all of o mac's knocks, he's able to consistently be fit enough to be regularly available

No [censored] him off.

I wouldn’t. He needs a bit more time. 24yrs old for someone who was a basketballer for most of his teen years, isn’t old in experience. His pace and versatility as a key back is something we should stick with. He’s got heaps more potential then Omac.

I keep saying this For God sake PLAY SMITH FORWARD!! Agree, that Oscar can go! Anywhere!

Petty could be a player but I hope he can be a much needed forward option.

So Oscar still needed as cover down back

Specific targets:
1. Build a time machine?

Oscar just hasn't become more physical, progressed to taking intercept marks or found the ability to track a lead and move with an opponent. As the game keeps getting quicker and quicker and he doesn't (both by mind and feet) it's hard to see him improving.

If you ran 100 simulations of Tom's career post 2018 I think this would be in the bottom 5 versions, but it's very hard to see where he finds the movement and confidence to bounce back from.

This year was meant to be a bounce back year and to various extents Viney, Vanders, Spargo, Weid, Hibberd even Lever a little did bounce back. The McDonald's didn't fire a shot.

Well I suggest you watch the Swans game a month or so ago and see if you think the same about Omac. If there was a pivotal point in our potential resurgence to make finals again, it was Omac dropping marks, being too slow to react etc which let them overtake us and sapped our confidence. and he's done it too many times. No way in demonland should he be retained. absolutely no way.

Oscar will not be at the Dees next year

I’m still thinking it’s going to be 37 + 3 rookies + Cat B
So need to shed a few more ...

OMc. ? delist

Chandler - probably delist

Bradtke - cat B so probably stays for one more years development

Joel Smith - trade or delist (imo delist )

KK - sad but probably to retire ?

Tom Mc - trade or retain

Preuss - trade or retain  ... probably ? to swans or giants

Jones - retire?? ?.

Jetta - retire???

Bedford and Spargo - just hold on

Nietschke - downgrade to rookie (R)

Played seven games this year so I’d suggest he isn’t. I reckon Tomlinson will take OMac’s position and we’ll look for another wingman.

Seems MFC website creator very much conflicted about what Tomlinson's role is.

Given the whispers on targets, imagine he'll remain in the backline.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
