Yeah, fair call Binman. I'll admit I may have overstated the difference between the two but I'd have Salem ahead of Saad.

When Salem has the ball, I feel comfortable that we're almost certainly going to maintain posession and there's a fair chance something good will happen. I rate him highly.

When Saad has the ball, it feels like a 50/50 equation and that's not what we're aiming for.

Admittedly, I probably only watch a third to a half of Bombers games, so happy to hear from others who have watched more closely.

Both average 18 disposals a game this year.

Disposal efficiency: Salem 71%, Saad 80%

Metres gained: Salem 303, Saad 393

I love Salem, but Saad is a better user and IMO has him covered as a player, albeit maybe not by a massive margin.

While I really like the idea of getting Saad to the club - especially for a second round pick, I wonder whether that is his real value or just the demonland board value.

For example, he's probably in essendon's top 3 performers this year.  Would we have thought our third best player last year (Jack Viney) would be worth a second round pick?

If one of Viney / Brayshaw / Harmes (inside mids that are behind Oliver and Petracca) want to seek opportunities elsewhere at the end of the season, would we be expecting a second round pick for them.  Maybe that's generous for Harmes right now as he is out of the team.... but he was 4th in our BnF last year and one of our best in 2018.

If Salem wanted out would we expect to get a pick in the 20s for him?

I might be wrong, but I think Saad has more currency than any of these players - or is that just me?

Saads very much an icing on the top type player. I would rate his worth as a late 1st round pick. I think a second rounder is unders, but certainly wouldn’t give a lot away to get him, either.

People over rate draft picks. If either Saad or Viney were available at a pick in the teens in this draft you'd be mad not to take them.

Thanks for this, Lord.

I'd love to see scoring chain involvements and 1v1 contests but those numbers are pretty compelling.

They're fairly even, but Saad edges Salem for contested one on ones, spoils, pressure acts, score involvements and score launches.

In the AFL player ratings Saad is 74 and Salem is 189.

Sorry Pollyanna, just to be clear you’re saying you’d be mad to not take the players right?

I’d always rather a known commodity (Saad/Viney) then a pick 18-30ish.

Unfortunately due to severe boredom I’ve watched most bombers games this year.

We’d be made not to chase Saad. Will be top 3 in there B and F, has speed, is a great kick and surprisingly is a very good defender.

Unfortunately Nev is about done, the pace of the game has gone past him and Hibberd isn’t getting any younger.

If he’s keen then it’s a 100% yes from me.

Agreed we should chase him hard and if we had our 1st I'd be willing to trade it.

Stevo on 7 just said that likely last game for Saad and Melbourne mooted as a potential destination.

Looks like we are right into him now.

Wonder if Essendon will be annoyed and play hard ball with us over him.  You would hope there would be some good will there after how well the Hibberd/Melksham deals went over the past few years.

I'd be happy to flip the Hawks 2nd rounder.

Essendon supposedly hard to deal with - but I don't think that has been our recent experience at all. I even recall something around those two deals where one or both of the clubs indicated that mid-table trades work according to rough pick-ranges and pragmatics rather than some minor sticking points. We paid 'overs' for one and 'unders' for the other. Who even remembers which one was which now? So much water under the bridge since then. Once a player in that range indicates an intention to leave and a desired club the deal will get done. And while some are bemoaning Mahoney it seems he hasn't ever burnt any bridges and seeks a fair outcome for all parties - that can come back as a benefit in the future. Saad = early second-rounder and maybe a small sweetener without giving the house away.

Most likely scenario if we are interested. Dont have much else to spend unless one or 2 of our decent players ask for a trade.

Saad would be a great get for our team IMO.

I wonder if Lockhart's omission and a potential delisting is tied up with discussions we might have been having with Saad over the past month or 3 (As well as relating to list size downgrading)

Not much point playing a small defender if he wont be getting a game next year and beyond.

Big yes but fear he may go to Carlton to replace kade simpson.  metres gained at a high disposal efficiency.  Last few years he himself has had almost as many bounces as our entire team. Make us less predictable.

We would have to deal with Dodoro. Good luck with that.

Bit of a stigma around Dodoro being hard to deal with, yes he played hard ball on Daniher but he was contracted so fair enough, we got hibberd and melksham without any dramas

I like it. Early second rounder should suffice.

He's a classic example of clubs scouring the VFL and finding gems. Papley (Casey) is another. Would love it if Melbourne put a few more resources into this.

I would like Saad, but also don't rate him as highly as most here do.

With that being said, I reckon the general footy fan overrates drop picks. He's definitely worth more than a second rounder, especially when the pick will get pushed back a few spots.

Somewhere in the mid to late teens would be the 'fair' market value, but if he requests a trade out of contract hopefully we snag him for a fourth rounder & O Mac.

still don't want him...for a high price

leads metres gained for the peptides cos he runs 15m and then kicks it 45 to no one in particular - i find i get frustrated with players who can't / don't lower their eyes when kicking, and saad is a serial culprit

petides mate is very confident he's staying

If we get Saad, then hopefully that options up the opportunity for someone like Rivers to get some midfield minutes.  That will be as much of a positive as adding Saad to our half back line.

After the game he seemed to be very friendly with Maxy and Salem, more so than usual.

Maxy also had a long and kind of serious conversation with daniher

He had a good chat to Salem post game. Make of that what you will (probably nothing)

Salem and family were all mad keen Essendon supporters before he was drafted by Melbourne. Maybe Saad was trying to entice him back into the fold!?

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
