I get that Melksham had a poor performance, but those thinking Goody will drop him are delusional. He’s been pretty decent the last few weeks prior, plus Goody loves him (per the captain choice),

Out: Preuss, Sparrow.

In: Gawn, Bennell or Jones.

Hibberd has one more chance I reckon.

You're right, he probably won't drop him, and then he'll wonder why our efforts are inconsistent and our forward pressure so poor. Then he'll drop Spargo or Hannan, maybe even Kozzy, and the cycle will continue unchanged.

I don't recall anyone suggesting melksham will be dropped

Well, we have one forced change in Sparrow.  Easiest would be to just bring Jones back on, but if he's not quite right with his quad maybe it's time to give Jordan a look.  The coaches have been saying for a while that he's ready, so this looks like a good chance to get his feet wet.

The other thing is that traditionally the Saints have troubled us with outside pace by simply belting the ball into space in the certain knowledge that all of our mids have come in to the contest and they will have free players on the outside to run away with it.  We need to get some outside run into the side for balance.  Hannan might be able to fill that role to some extent, so maybe no other changes.  If we do see more, it needs to be pace.

Only 2 forced changes after that debacle. I hope you are wrong. We should be making at least 4 to 6 to make a difference these poor performances can't be tolerated. Rivers must come in for a start.

About 10 people have suggested it.

And with good reason.

But I also think it's unlikely Goodwin will drop him. Melksham is rated highly by Goodwin/the FD.

Out: Sparrow (Inj), Pickett, Preuss
In: Rivers, Bedford, Gawn

- Harmes to go into Sparrows role.
- Rivers come in to cover where Harmes has been in the backline.
- Bedford to come in and replace Pickett.
- Gawn to come in for Preuss.

Few questionable as well;

Spargo
Tomlinson
Vanders

Thats because he's by far the best decision maker entering 50 and kick (on both feet) to the advantage of the forward its not funny.  Also not funny is his total lack of defensive pressure. Needs to stay in the team but get a proverbial rocket for that effort today.

I thought Tomlinson was ok. Spargo can go waste of space. I'm losing patience with Vanders his hardness can only get him so far, time to do more. Harmes doesn't deserve his spot in the team. I'd like to see Kossie and Bedford together again.

I know what his positives are.

His mistakes, ill-discipline and failure to impact the game consistently mean the negatives outweigh the positives.

It's a bit like vandenBerg. Positives with the physicality, tackling, pressure, etc., outweighed by the turnovers and ill-discipline.

I didn't think neither here nor there about Tomlinson today, but I don't rate him overall in that back roll and I think St. Kilda have more genuine goal scorers than what Footscray do.

Spargo is heavily inconsistent, but the reason I chose to leave him in over Kozzie, is because Kozzie simply needs a spell, he is becoming quite undisciplined and needs to learn that doesn't go unnoticed.

I feel as though that criticism of Harmes has come off the back of him being incorrectly played. I would love to see him get a run at what he has done so well for us in the past, forward/mid.

I can't wait to see Kozzie and Bedford together again, just not this week.

Out - T Mac he is a shadow of his former self. I love him but I just can't understand it.

In - Hunt who is a natural forward, has pace, leads well, marks well and puts defensive pressure on the opposition when they have it.

Out: Preuss, Sparrow

In: Gawn, Rivers

Rivers should never have been dropped in the first place. Put him into the half back role and have Harmes run through as the 5th midfielder splitting his time in the forward half.

Agree re Harmes. Being played in the wrong position. Hibbo had a shocker. Jetta fit?

By the way, we will beat the Saints.

I will add Baker to my suggested ins. I cant follow how Goody tolerates so many mistakes from players in the team but so much is expected of players not getting a game as we saw with Weid. I am sure Goody would say Baker still needs to work on a few things. It is bizarre.

Simply have to give him a chance. Baker has pace. We need pace !!!  It was our deficiency v dogs and v Saints last year.
In baker’s first game , he had burst to get it, get clear and run.

By game 4, he was stopping to handball. His natural pace and run had been outcoached from him by Goodwin.

Baker needs to be given the next 2 games in the wing opposite Langdon. If he fails, then he is on the edge and likely could be delisted. But give him a go !!!!!

I would be happy with that. The handball points to Goody but also maybe to dominant players looking for easy  touches. I have no inside knowlege but we play like a team with cliques within the team.

Love it. Would add out Harmes in Jetta.

I have assumed Harmes will move into Sparrows rotation. We already lack pace we cant bring in Jetta against the Saints.

Melksham has been woeful in all but one game this year. He keeps getting games seemingly because he’s mate with Goodwin. He needs to be dropped. If it’s good enough for Hibbo, Jones and Jetta it’s good enough for Melksham.

Whilst I would for longer term team balance and due to his lack of defence and discipline would omit Melksham It’s understandable why we dont. Even yesterday he kicked 1 goal 3 and had 6 score involvements. I dont expect him to be go anywhere whilst he is creating 5+ chances to score.

I've wanted him dropped for half this season, Goody mustn't read our messages on here unfortunately..

Sparrow with a busted wing is out and we will be playing off a 5 day break so some may need to be rested  given we front up for the next game 4 days later. The Saints have a 4 day break so maybe that will help us. My concern is that in the Dogs exploited us with the switch and fast transition and that the the Saints will murder us because that is their bread and butter game style.Lets hope the coaching staff are quick to come up with a solution to this.

The backline is pretty settled except for Harmes who is out of sorts and probably out of position.. If not dropped he replaces Sparrow and Rivers comes in. Gawn in for Preuss and Mac is the backup ruckman and I doubt Jones will get up so soon with quad tightness. Look to the emergencies for who will come in. They were Mitch Brown, Mitch Hannan, Trent Rivers and Joel Smith. No real outside runners in this group

Out Sparrow Preuss

In Gawn, Rivers

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
