Illess and injury are a personal matter, scans etc, operations etc

It was uncool that @goodwindees released the news, but understand why he did it, from.past history both Goodwin and Burgess will be [censored] that it was released before official confirmation

Hate to say it Saty but the health of AFL players is always up for speculation and release of information. What reaction do you think people would have if someone got injured in the game and afterwards the media chose not to report it or ask about it?

If it's a disease or mental health issue that's different, but if it happens on the footy field then chances are the information will get out at some stage whether it's through the club, media, or leak.

I say well done to Goodwindees for having the scoop.

As for AvB, I'm gutted that he'll miss a few matches but on the plus side when others may be tiring from the crammed fixture he will hopefully be fresher and able to have an impact.

You sound a bit upset that someone here gets real inside info from the club.

Keep it coming @goodwindees  ... Ill be expecting big things from you in trade week.

Lots of theories around why Goodwin and Burgess didn’t mention the injury when given the opportunity, but isn’t the simplest and most likely explanation just that they didn’t know about it at the time of the reports? it seems like the type of injury that a player could probably attempt to conceal and not alert the club staff until a few days later when it didn’t seem to be getting better?

I think @goodwindees mentioned that surgery was already booked by the time the players finished up on Sunday night.

My best guess is that Burgo/Goody didn’t release the news because they wanted to see how the surgery went and what the surgeon’s advice was on a return to play. That way they can give one update such as “had surgery out for 2 weeks” rather the news being fragmented over a couple of days.

And in fact that is exactly what the club did. Not only news not fragmented, fans not worried ('a broken face - he'll be our till next year!), story quiet and actually good news as 2 weeks us fine.

This from article posted last night 6pm (at the same time as the club interview with goody that his quote is from):

MELBOURNE will be without Aaron vandenBerg for its next two matches, after the midfielder underwent surgery on Tuesday evening.

vandenBerg suffered a fractured cheekbone during his side’s 43-point victory over the Hawks in Round 7, and is already on the mend.

While it’s an unfortunate setback for the 27-year-old, who has played just 39 career games due to ongoing foot troubles, Simon Goodwin says he should make a quick recovery.

“He got a pretty heavy knock in the first quarter and fractured a cheekbone,” Goodwin said on this week’s episode of The Talking Points.

Wondering how we got him to QLD, can you fly with a fractured cheekbone or did AVB endure a 1000km trip in a Hertz rental?

He probably walked!

Listened on radio against Suns;
didn’t hear his name at all. Wondering if he’d been relisted and downgraded to Emergency.

Game on the line, late in the last - he gets called 3 times in two minutes.

This would probably be the best explanation for it.

Fractured cheekbone can sound bad and can be horrendous (e.g. James Hird) so maybe they wanted to determine just how bad it was before saying anything and letting MFCSS sink in.

The Airline weren’t going to let AVB on the plane with a fractured cheekbone so he tackled the pilot and flew the plane himself.

A bit like this Ethan? Otto the auto pilot was pretty darn good!!

Then what's the point of Burgess doing a weekly injury report to the public when it's a personal matter??

You've contradicted yourself here Sat....

The 'official' injury report, the extent also has to be confirmed

The players sanction the official release

It was going to be released, my opinion, @goodwindees should have kept it to himself, but his choice, Goodwin is not a fan, hope he protects his source

Is Goody happy that you've told everyone he is unhappy? Or should that have been kept quiet as well?

Not really interested in out scooping someone, unlike some others, from past experience, just know Goody is unimpressed with info appearing on here before it is official

Oh no.
Saturday detentions are on the way....

I have been (binge) watching the bureau on sbs on demand, which by the by I highly recommend.

It is a French thriller all about spys who lie, double cross, embed, pretend they are other people, betray, keep secrets, trade secrets and intelligence and all manner of subterfuge.

Apparently it is based on John Williamson's play The Club.

Always remember: the first language of football is lying

Having read this thread and various other threads re VandenBerg over the years I think I have the un-popular opinion of that I don't think he's that good. I understand there needs to be some forgiveness given he's lack of continuity in his football, but he just can't kick.

I think he can be the beneficiary of shortened quarters where he can be used as an impact player - but he needs to be more than a bloke that can just tackle. He has no problem finding the ball:

vs Geelong – 1 kick, 6 handballs, 3 tackles 62% game time –71% efficiency

vs Richmond – 14 touches, 3 tackles, 70% game time –85% efficiency

vs Gold Coast – 11 touches, 3 tackles, 47% game time –72% efficiency

vs Hawthorn – 13 touches, 4 tackles, 81% game time – 53% disposal efficiency

If he polishes up his kicking - especially at goal, he could be a lot more damaging playing that half-forward pushing deeper role. Bizarrely, I can acknowledge that we are a better side with him in - so maybe I'm just Covid rambling

“I think”, lol mate. Either you do or you don’t? 2018 finals at his best he is a good player for us. This year has been a slow start for him.

The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence. Lack of preparation after a problematic preseason prevented Oliver from reaching the high standards set before last year’s hamstring woes. BLOODY BLUES by Meggs

The conclusion to Narrm’s home and away season was the inevitable let down by the bloody Blues  who meekly capitulated to the Bombers.   The 2024 season fixture handicapped the Demons chances from the get-go with Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Essendon advantaged with enough gimme games to ensure a tough road to the finals, especially after a slew of early season injuries to star players cost wins and percentage.     As we strode confidently through the gates of Prin
