Well, Gawn is ten days older than May, so really the best thing would have been to trade Gawn and that way we could have had both Kings.

I see it as it was - we traded Hogan for May.

3 or 4 years out of Stephen May could be enough to win a flag ( or two) with say Petty his successor.

Look at GWS today and they are struggling at present and we could join them on 3 wins by tomorrow night and who would say our list is the potential of their AFL gifted amalgamation if talent!

Please keep some faith and sensibility about trading and its irregularities. 
 

PS Seem to recall a guy called Lockett and he hasn't ever hung an AFL medal around  his neck. Also another quirk is that Brian Lake win a  "Normie" who would have thought that plus Chip Frawley kept Josh Kennedy to a handful of kicks in 2015.

I don't think Melbourne played the percentages in the most recent draft. The Pickett selection is a good one, he was the top rated small forward in the draft and perfectly fit a need for the team. But I don't think it made sense to draft a high-risk high-reward ruckman at pick 3, when we already have an elite ruckman for the next 5 or so years.

If you look at the other options we had at the trade table, Jackson was a huge gamble. Melbourne had the option of trading pick 3 for pick 6, GWS 2020 first rounder, and a 3rd rounder. We could then trade pick 6 back to 10 to grab Pickett, 28, and something else (a mid second rounder). The opportunity cost of selecting Jackson was effectively our 2020 first, a GWS 2020 first, pick 26, a mid second rounder, a GWS third rounder, and pick 50. Hopefully Jackson becomes a star player and is worth it, but only time will tell.

Ridiculous time to be analysing this. I love what we've done at the draft and trade table over the past 6-7 years. We just need a game plan that clicks with these players and none of that will matter. People are so quick to judge.

Why the worry about giving the #1 pick to North. (We'd have more to worry about than that if we do).  It's been said the 2020 draft was compromised before Covid.  Now recruiters will have to a  lot more guessing than usual.  Pick quality will be more random than ever.

Not if you have the first few picks sue. But you are correct if we give north pick 1 the MFC will be up to its eyes in crap and be looking for several FD positions to fill and potentially a new board.

Agree with this.

I reckon there's a fair chance we only released Hogan for pick 6 once we knew that GC would trade us May (+ KK) for 6.

In other words, we really traded Hogan for May + KK.

And even if we did trade May (+ KK) for 6, it was a justified call at the time, and isn't even in the top 10 reasons for our poor early-2020 form.

Pickett was never going to last till 28 dogs would have taken him with pick 15 if he even lasted till then. Agree Jackson is high risk high reward so we have to wait and see there.  None of the other players that were in the pick 3 range have done anything yet anyway.

In that scenario we would maintain picks 10 and 28. The only difference would be Jackson and the picks I listed.

This was the point I made earlier, the trade for the pick wasn’t a trade disaster because we gambled on us having a good year. It’s up to the team to make the trade get it’s best return. 

Kozzie hasn’t been prolific but he’s doing plenty of important things and is clearly getting more confidence in himself.

Ok. We picked up Kozie ( likely 200 games) Jackson , ditto, Rivers, possibly ditto plus Bennell,  Langdon, Tomlinson 

seems ok to me. I think we are a live chance this year, and a terrific chance next year
