Agreed.

An impassioned plea by one G.Lyon on SEN:

“This is a guy who is not as clean and pure but I talk often about knowing what you are going to get with players which is the number one quality for me.

“You know what you are going to get with him every time. It’s heart, it’s soul, it’s commitment, it’s body on the line, it’s ferocious competitiveness, it’s a refusal to concede.

“I don’t know what’s going through his mind but I know he’s appreciated, loved, wanted and respected and I’d be shattered if he left from a Melbourne point of view,” he added.

“I’ve thought long and hard about it, whether there is some sameness to this midfield, and there is some truth to that but rather than just get rid of some, try and add to it without losing someone of the quality of Jack.

Jnr, I'm with you and Garry.  A Club just doesn't let players like Jack go.  It just doesn't.

A RUTHLESS club would!! J.V for a first rounder?? Yes please!

On the one hand, Viney is one of the few mids we have who is consistent in his output. On the other hand, he plays a selfish style of footy which is sometimes detrimental to our overall midfield work. On the third hand, he is an excellent extractor of the footy, very good tackler and has a strong body. But my fourth hand points out that really, his kicking is limited, as is his decision making.

This is a very tough one. You wouldn't move him on unless:

He was adamant he wants out  OR

We got a player for him that fills a gaping hole on the list.... a small defensive forward, a speedy wingman, a FF (as if), or a quality half back rebounding defender.

I am not interested in more picks or more inside mids.

What makes you think we will get a 1st round pick if he goes as an FA?

Lyons impassioned response to the rumour re Jack stands in stark contrast to that of Goodwin which was sterile, robotic and flat. A bit like him, really.

Agree Mickey, but again hypothetically, if you traded him to Cats after matching contract offer and say they gave you a good outside mid and a first round pick and you got say a good key forward with that pick , what would you say to that?

Hey Red. In short, yes. But clubs have been reluctant to match and trade so far, presumably because they don't want to be stuck with a player that doesn't want to be there.

Now, matching the bid and forcing a trade would be ruthless, but it could also backfire.

If Viney goes Goodwin can follow.

If Viney stays Goodwin can still go.

I’ve found that interesting discussion, he’s missed one game and all of a sudden he’s tradable,” Goodwin told Fox Footy.

“He’s a Melbourne person through and through, Jesse, and we love having him in our team.”

That's why Ross Lyon  should be our 2021, and beyond with new Assistants Coach

Geelong CEO Brian Cook has confirmed the Cats have spoken to Melbourne star Jack Viney’s manager, but insists he is one of a number of players the club has enquired about heading into the off-season.

A Herald Sun report earlier in the week linked Geelong to Viney, who is a restricted free agent and out-of-contract with Melbourne at year’s end.

Speaking on K-Rock, Cook confirmed an approach had taken place.

“There’s truth in the fact we’ve spoken to his manager,” he said.

“But gee whiz, our club has spoken to about 20 managers about whether there’s people available. It’s not as though we’ve picked him and said he is the one we want and away we go.”

That he is prepared to publicly name Viney suggests he has had at least a warm reception from his Manager and that MFC have been informed.  Cook is too smart to come out and blindside a club by publicly naming its Vice-captain.

i would presume if it's this public that discussions are a long way down the track

Strange thing to presume.

Bad move IMHO to take the captaincy from Jack.  That is behind his desire to move on I believe. I don't really care about his skill set in terms of kicking.  What I do care about is his leadership style of putting his body on the line for the club every single game. THAT is the type of leadership that we cannot afford to throw away and is the type of leadership that inspires players to premierships.  If Jack leaves, that will be an unmitigated disaster.

If he wants to leave in part because he was replaced as captain then best for everyone that he goes. This club has long suffered from the interests of the individual being put before the team. If the club thought a change of captain was justified, then a good team player would cop it on the chin and get on with it.

Any chance we have of meaningful cultural change starts with the dog taking back it's own tail.

There’s a thread on this forum about ruthlessness. I think it’s time this club displayed some.

When weighting up a trade you have to consider what you get in return. It’s been mentioned here we’d get a first round compensation pick. That’s overs for Jack in my mind.

I agree that he leads by example and is consistent of effort. And that’s not nothing. But when he had the captaincy last year he was poor and didn’t handle it well. It affected his game (although no doubt injury played a part as well). His skills are limited and let him down too often.

We have a tendency to over rate our players. There haven’t been too many players who have left this club recently and been a success elsewhere and I reckon Jack will be no different.

If we get a first round pick which we use to secure Zac Williams we will have improved our list imo.

if we let jack go and sign williams as a free agent then there is no compo

hopefully we've learned from the mistake of losing rivers as a free agent and then giving away any compo by signing byrnes as a free agent

Thank for the correction WWSW.

Shannon Byrnes. Jeez. A very underwhelming 2 years at the club. I think Williams is a safer bet though.

You mean like pushing Watts and Hogan out the door and playing Frawley forward after letting him explore his options, ensuring we could train up a new key back and still get maximum compensation, which led to Brayshaw's pick?

We've shown plenty of ruthlessness. There's a difference between being ruthless and careless with knee-jerk decision making.

Further, Zac Williams is a FA, we don't need to trade for him...

I’m not about knee jerk reactions. Absolutely the pros and cons need to be weighed up and properly considered.

It’s more the heart and soul arguments I take issue with.

You’re correct about Williams. Thanks for putting be right there.

Since Angus is in for foot surgery and all the uncertainty that a two to three month rehabilitation entails the suggestion that we can let Viney go is crazy.

If we were sure of landing Williams as a FA, ideally, we'd threaten to match and force Geelong into a trade, as they did for Danger. As it stands, Geelong have 11, 15 and 16. Then we'd get a pick for Jack and Williams. Though GWS could very well do the same to us

And furthermore, why would a club that chronically lacks physical presence, mongrel, bruising footballers surrender a competitive beast like Jack Viney.

I agree with G Lyon. You know what you're getting with Jack. A first round draft pick? Huh, this is supposed to be the most compromised draft for a decade. A first round pick ain't worth as much this year. And who's to say we don't end up with another Jimmy Toumpas?

Finally, the fact that a mob like Geelong is considering him is confirmation enough that we should keep him. The forwards need to connect better and play to his strengths as much as he tries to play to theirs.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
