I don't understand the hatred for Smith he is a young kid making his way and kept Riewoldt to 1 goal. He did his job, Lever is a bigger problem on big bucks and does nothing week in week out. The worst recruit we have had by a country mile.

Didnt have a great game and the smothered kick out of defence that resulted in an opportunist goal wasn’t all his fault, he made position for an Oliver handpass. Oliver was under some pressure and managed to give off a 7m handball to a running Smith’s feet that he gathered well but the delay was enough for Tigers to intercept. Not sure what was going on with Oliver but he had a 27 possession shocker! Repeated kicks and handballs to no one at best and opposition at worst. But OK he still gets to the contest, that is something Viney used to do, but he seems to have dropped off.

Post match Goodwin said we are taking 33 players to the hub. Combination of a few younger and older players staying behind. Anyone have any inside word on who isn’t going?

I made some suggestions in the Hub thread.

My thinking is Neita, Kolo, Hore, Petty, Bradtke, both Wagners, Dunkley, Baker will stay. Preuss, Sparrow, Jordon and Chandler make 13, so one will probably come with the team.

Will be interesting if any older players stay. Goodwin said families were coming, but I wonder if Jones would really want to bring his school age children for longer than 2 weeks.

Did I hear correctly when Goodwin said in the presser we were only bringing 33 players to the hub so that other players can bring there missus’s?
Disgusting if true, those players being left back would be insipid. Culture destroying stuff.

As a paid member it’s nice to know we are funding players family holidays over taking the full squad.

Garbage. There’s a selection committee.

we are 17th on the ladder and no first round draft pick. This club kills me.

You do know a lot of teams have kicking coaches, don’t you? In fact Adem Yze began his career with Hawthorn as one. He improved their accuracy in front of goal from 48% to 57% actually.

Sure, but the point remains is that a player who comes to the AFL as a poor or even average kick will rarely get much better, particularly their field kicking.

The reason of course is like golf swing it is all about technique and by the time they get to the AFL they have kicked it hundreds of thousands of times. Very hard to change a golf swing and very hard to change kicking technique.

I can count on one hand dees players who have improved more than marginally. Jones is one, who gtes much more penetration than when he first started

Set shots are easier to correct because it is more mental, they have time to gather themselves and they can develop a set routine. Cassboult is good example.

This is the key reason i feel so concerned about where we are at as club. As i have been banging on about we are simply a terrible kicking side, at a time in footy's evolution where kicking in the skill that separates teams as all teams now compete and defend. All clubs have our one wood. But the best ones have mix of a few elite kicks (like say bot Kellys), above average kicks (like say Heath Shaw), mostly average kicks and very few, if any real butchers (insert 15 dees players  here).

I don't care what game plan is employed if you have team full of poor kicks then you are stuffed. And it will take years to recruit and draft ourselves out of this problem.

Again as i have noted before i put the blame squarely at the feet of Goodwin and Roos for almost exclusively chasing competitive ball winners and getting no elite ball users. Viney is the prefect example. As is Brayshaw. Oliver is becoming one.

Gawn needs help in the ruck to allow him to go forward and provide a contest because nobody else is capable of doing it.

Why not have Preuss play as #1 ruck and move Gawn forward?

Sounds ludicrous i know, but we are now getting rather desperate.

The point being that players can improve their kicking throughout their career.

Warren Tredrea from Port couldn’t hit a barn from 30 metres out in his first couple of seasons. When he retired he could kick long bomb goals from 60 metres.

Completely disagree. Some of the players left behind are injured so what’s the point to bring them? And some are unlikely to get a game.
Plenty of guys with young babies who should have the opportunity to bring their families along.

Viney bringing his wife and one week old baby is more important than us bringing KK or Hore who can’t play. Don’t you agree?
This is a big ask for players. If we can make it easier on them, they will be happier and play better. No point bringing along guys who will never get a game anyway.

We need to treat this year as a practice game year now. Try a few players in new positions, some new game plans, etc. This is another lost year.

This is the issue Saty !

How many times can we watch " the same appalling errors" and not ask the question as to whether what the " coach coaches during the week"   is having any impact, effect or use?

Based on performance, it seems none.

Next obvious question. Is said coach of any [censored] use at all ?

BBO, you can't coach F...kups.

I tried to make a habit of not reading/ commenting on this site after a loss (and for that matter a win). But tonight I cannot help myself. I understand the angst and the heartbreak of seeing so many try and fail. But can someone that understands logic please explain to me how any Umpire with half a brain can say " I know he didn't have prior opportunity but he has to make a genuine attempt" What muppet wrote this (if indeed that is what the rule is) and coaches /instructs the Umpires.

Surely, if you don't have prior opportunity you cannot have any kind of attempt genuine or otherwise. I saw this incorrectly payed  as a free multiple times across the round. MFCSS of course dictates that it's payed to the opposition 20m out directly in front, halts all our momentum and the make up one is paid with no chance of it having any influence on the scores.

I'm rapidly getting to the stage that I will not watch any AFL games other than to watch a Melbourne win after the fact.

I often hear it said that you need people who understand football, making decisions/ changes at AFL house. I would just settle for someone that understands logic.

So you only comment after a draw?

As much as I’d like to drop Oliver, we can’t afford to lose his ability in the contest. Brayshaw however would not be missed one iota.

Well I was saying that Goodwin should make a statement so I would drop Oliver myself. Brayshaw and Viney are limited players but trying hard. I am sure Oliver is trying but he is potentially elite but not getting better, something is not right, maybe he needs a wake up call? Give him a rest to reflect and get some hunger. We are shot for the season, let’s face it so I would be trying some new talent and maybe even Jones comes in because our on field leadership is rubbish.

Oliver and Viney need to put their hand up and drop themselves.

That lazy kick from Oliver towards Petracca in the last which resulted in a Richmond goal should be enough alone for him to miss next week. Just horrible.

Melksham is supposed to be one of our key creative and clever players bringing the ball inside 50.  Today he kicked two goals and a behind... and yet had one of the worst individual games possible.  That was, apparently, all of his disposals.  He also gave away at least one goal with a dumb free kick against.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt last week, thinking he had been a bit unlucky, but the only gain from hsi performance this week is that we definitely have someone to drop when we bring in the second tall forward we so despetately need to make McDonald a little less predictable and to allow Fritsch to do what he is best at instead of being 'the' forward target.

Brayshaw was 100 million times better than Oliver today.

Keeping the squad together should be priority, rather then leaving fellas in recovery to train on there own away from the team.

We are a club that’s going nowhere again and will no doubt burn another list of players! Goodwin can fix the continued poor turnovers & decision making, we have 2 marking forwards not getting a game yet we are struggling kicking goals & taking marks inside 50, whilst witnessing Lynch & Reivoldt  taking marks, were is the logic there???

If we can win the next 2 we are back in it 3 and 3. Gold Coast without Rowell aren't daunting and Hawthorn aren't anything special. but we have to change everything from game plan to personal I don't think Goodwin is willing to do that because he is a dud coach.

I’m sure players who won’t be playing would rather stay home with loved ones than be stuck in a hotel for 5 weeks.
Players cannot leave the hotel except to train or play. It’s not a holiday.

He was a serious gambler. The problem with that personality type is repeating the same mistakes over and over.

The Giants aren’t much better than us, they only got 18 scores from 22 inside 50’s.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
